We love Aldi in S. California. When we go to Europe we stay at apartments and look for either Aldi or Continente. Sometimes we see Trader Joes items at Aldi too. Also, Aldi bought WinnDixie this year too, a >500 store chain in the South.
Really interesting that in the USA they use so much unnecessary plastic, huge amounts of sugar, and ingredients that are banned in Europe. And very narrow spaces at the entrance and exit, the cart barely fit through. 🛒
Hopefully that's over come next year. The People issued a Mandate on food heath. In The States they like to bottle neck entrances in the name of safety without thinking about how much of a Safety issue it is when shit goes sideways.
I moved to Ljubljana, Slovenia a couple years ago and I'm still surprised at how good the food is at Hofer / Lidl in Slovenia compared to the US and Canada. Even the prices are much lower. It was a pretty good decision to relocate to Slovenia and work remotely. The low pollution, much lower cost of living and good food make Slovenia an attractive country in Europe to move to.
There was an Aldi in the small Ohio town I lived in for 9 years. I never once shopped there. We had an awesome local supermarket with fresh food and good prices so I never felt the need to go to Aldi. Thanks Barbara for showing me what I missed.
Aldi is the friggin g.o.a.t. Especially these days with grocery prices being what they are. They have great produce, off-brand products that are actually good quality, at great prices. A grocery bill that would easily be pushing $200 in any of the other supermarkets, you're putting down less than $100. Recommended.
I live 10 minutes away from a Hofer in Austria and 15 minutes from a slovenian Hofer. Prices in Slovenia often are a bit more expensive but I like it that you can get regional slovenian products there that you can't get in Austria 😊 And if you need something specific and it's sold out in Austria, you can often get it a week later in Slovenia
HVALA / DANKE….for buying German Sauerkraut…😉 But seriously, pls make a part two with footage from a HOFER. Guessing you will be in one no so far in the future…🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮
In Canada --- I've *heard* of this Aldi but never seen one. My parents and most/all relatives are from or in Switzerland, so I'm sure they would be familiar. Too much pre-packaged "food" in North America in general. I doubt many people would get along without the stuff. If you want good fresh-baked goods, find a small local bakery or maybe a Safeway... Cheers!...from North Vancouver
Regarding bread. I live in Slovenia and when I had relatives from Texas visit me years ago, they were literally amazed at how many types of bread we have and how good it is. There is a bakery nearby and every morning we would go and get bread and pastries at 6am, freshly baked and still hot.
"I just like real bread" Americans think the soft crap IS real bread. Yes, I'm American, but I grew up near Amish country, where they know how to make bread.
In the US if Aldi is you main store (as mine is since I am in and out in 5 min.), your diet gets pretty limited and, of course, "plant based" stuff is not a priority with me. I do have 2 jars of that kraut in my cabinet.
I'm an American who shops at Aldi's out of being poor. Yup. Not ashamed anymore. Money is over rated. I honestly don't need as much as I used to believe I did. Keep going girl! You are a rock star! Your endurance has proven that!
I get almost everything there. In Australia. Glad to know there are sensible people elsewhere in the world. Do not think we have forgotten why you are here. 😉 More power to your arm.
In Austria we have the hofer price song too. If I remember correctly it is also called hofer in Slovakia. With current food prices they really have the best deals
i just subscribed, be cause of 1 video, the one about Slovenia things straight talk. This is my 2nd of your vids, and for 2 years Aldi süd is the only place I get groceries, and I live in Acworth, Georgia, US.
Never been in an Aldi but they had built stores back in Tennessee before I moved from there to North Dakota in 2014. There are certainly none in northwest ND or eastern Montana but perhaps elsewhere in these northern Plains states (Aldi's map of the US does not show locations until a city/state/zip code is entered, so it is useless to simply browse). You comparisons to the EU experience were interesting, though. I chuckled more than once, especially at Kraft "Singles"... I know what's in this "cheese" but it's also "normal" to me... Still alive and healthy/skinny at my age, so it can't be alllll that bad, eh? lol Up in these parts, I shop at a local grocery (neeeeeeeeeeever Walmart... blech) and cook real meals for myself 99% of the time. Thanks for sharing the research, though, for I never delved into the Aldi name and origins in the past. Keep up the great work! :)
There used to be more European snacks and things just a few years ago. I guess they are just assimilating to the American food blob. I do find that amongst my local retailers, Aldi sourdough bread is the cheapest and tastes the best, but a local bakery opened up a year and a half ago, so I’ve been getting much better quality bread lately.
Yes, those old videos about the opening of the famous Hofer in Slovenia are really funny today. People flocked to the store like pigs to fresh pumpkins. And three-quarters of those washing machines "at the Hofer price" were brought back because they were worthless. We also have packaged salads and other things - although not as much as in the US - and that gets on my nerves; sorry, but this packaged salad seems like rabbit food to me. BTW, they haven't made a new commercial for Hofer for a long time, there's only "Hofer price nanana-na". Ever since they built the competition Lidl right in front of my nose, I've been going straight to the competition. Same shit - price and quality - there, there. Both are good to extend the shit ... at a low price. 🤣🤣🤣😎✌
ive been to aldi north, aldi süd (south), hofer austria and hofer slovenia. the plant based foods differ in all different aldi/hofer stores even if its from the same brand. maybe to cover the local taste
It is my understanding that Aldi North is Aldi in North America and Aldi South is Trader Joe's. I'm not quite clear if that's what you said or not. Sorry for redundancy if you did. For the salad kits and bags of prechopped lettuce, I would not make so many salads if these not available. Lol. Seems like the Aldi stores in Phoenix. I hate it when I forget to bring a quarter. : ) I think Trader Joe's will have your plant based stuff.
Actually it is the other way around, as Barbara said. It’s rather easy to remember the ALDI North logo is made up of blue and white, while ALDI South also have some orange in it.
Hofer (or Lidl, Eurospin) are ok-ish. You can get some good stuff there and prices are somehow ok. However the layout of these stores is so unlogical and lots of time looks like a complete mess in the store. You can get similar products at different parts of a store. So eventually you have to go around the store and by the way, you can buy something else, which you didn't plan in the first place. But I guess this is their strategy of making more revenue.
I enjoyed your video. It seems like when I go there people are in a big hurry. I’m not sure why. I found a better grocery store that is as big as Walmart and they have even lower prices. It’s farther away but it’s worth the drive.
The first trip to slovenia I went to a hofer .. as I walked around couldn’t get over the feeling I had been there b4.. the I realized it was Aldi from states … the non good items in the middle of store .. they have so much more and many items not in Aldi USA.. love them .. and go to hofer every time in Slovenia a few times a week . Here in Florida I have seen more plant based items. I. The meat section .. and freezer
Well you see :), angry people in Aldi , also in Switzerland 😂, and in France 😂(even worst in France across the border ) , the customers just here in Aldi for the low price, so much inflation in Europe now
In Germany, people take something from the fridge for instance and leave it somewhere else in the store. You see that all the time. Unlike in this video. Everything looks so in order!
Car Barbara - AND - Room Barbara 🤩Christmas has come early to the land of youtube Find many Aldi-US products very good if not better than my area supermarkets and much cheaper. our Aldi in eastern US has a decent selection of German foods, especially around Christmas.
Aldi is hit or miss depending on the area. They were cheaper, so people thought it was a ghetto store. Some still are. Others in nice areas are an upscale but inexpensive place to shop.
I went to ALDI once in SC. It was a shit show with old people standing in small isles just lookin at shit and nobody just "Going to the store, buying what they wanted and leaving."
Just enjoy the amount of money you saved by not buying all that pre-packaged garbage food. Only idiots buy that crap. Come to Nanaimo in Canada and look me up.
We have a bunch of german cookies and goodies at our ALDI. But I'm in Pittsburgh where there's a large demand for it. ALDI 'kraut btw I find to be not as good as Snowfloss. (I grew up with a Slovenian grandma and a german grandma so I'm picky about it!)
Here in uk aldi was a cheaper place now all the supermarkets are basically the same price you might save a couple of quid , you can get some unique stuff from aldi & lidl i do like lidls pastries but im fat so hahah great vid thanks.
Lmao, they opened in Slovenia by discounting a bunch of electronics? Aldi here in Belgium is always busy, but it only gets rushed like that. Is when they have cheap computers laptops television… or something that’s normally expensive. Wow so much plastic in America, literally everything in plastic.
Quality of product Aldi ?? Rubbish , horrible .And here in Switzerland we also have Lidl , even more cheaper and better, especially for fruits and vegetables . But Coop and Migros here in Switzerland much better, although of course more expensive. But always good to buy swiss chocolate like Toblerone or Lindt and Swiss cheese with cheaper prices in Aldi or Lidl :)
Americans : would u like some bread? ☺️
Continental Europeans : yes please! 😃
Muricans: gave them a TOAST 🥪
C.Europeans: 🤌🏼🖕🏼😱💀👽💥🔥👊🏼🤦🏼♂️
😅😅😅
Congratulations Barbara. You have unlocked the "Make shopping at Aldi interesting" achievement on TH-cam. I am not even being sarcastic.
Thank you so much! What a rad comment 😅

Appreciate that you actually do research. When you speak it is always from an informed perspective. : )
Research is my favorite part. I fall down some very deep rabbit holes 😅
Hahah, hvala za tole! Dejansko sem se to spraševal, kako je! Thanks Barbara! Cheers!

Unfortunately all carbs are processed into glucose (carbs = sugar)
I live in the US and I shop at the local Aldi on a regular basis because it has good pesto sauce.
As soon as I saw the intro, I understood the reference. I was not disappointed. 😂
😅😅😅
HVALA / DANKE….for buying German Sauerkraut…😉 But seriously, pls make a part two with footage from a HOFER. Guessing you will be in one no so far in the future…🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮
Good theme for black Friday season 😎👍
You are a good grocery store tour guide. You are hired. 🙂
😊 thank you
Amazing Barbara 😊

I miss slovenske pekarne 😅
Your videos are the best! ❤❤
You're the best!
Such a good video!❤ now I’m waiting for a slovenian Hofer 🙌🏻
Thank you 🎉🎉 coming soon!😊
I just binged watched your videos after searching Slovenia, You should have been in every John Wick movie, somewhere "Kristusove Gate"
Great sound ❤
I worked at a place that produced some products for Aldi, and they added a lot more sugar to the Aldi store brand products than their general recipe.
That is just wild to me!
"I just like real bread" Americans think the soft crap IS real bread. Yes, I'm American, but I grew up near Amish country, where they know how to make bread.
Homemade bread is where it's at.
Yes!! I agree with Amish bread. I have Amish all around where I live. The horse and buggies as well.
Amish bread is just European bread.
Um, no. Americans come in all varieties. We like all kinds of bread.
In the US if Aldi is you main store (as mine is since I am in and out in 5 min.), your diet gets pretty limited and, of course, "plant based" stuff is not a priority with me. I do have 2 jars of that kraut in my cabinet.
I think veggies and fruits are pretty accessible. Maybe also trail mix. Everything else is nope for me. Except humus 😅
Please make Slovenian Aldi video so we can see the differences. Also, nice seeing you in @thepianobangers video.
I plan to! In December or January when I'm home 😁
Could never eat bread again after learning about the lectins, phytic acid and glyphosate
Yeah, it does some weird stuff to my stomach
"Everyone seemed so angry"
A Slovenian comes to America.
Aldi Is also present in Italy!! This map is old!! So you can Aldi in Trieste and few km away...Hofer in Sezana!! 😅
In Austria we have the hofer price song too.
If I remember correctly it is also called hofer in Slovakia.
With current food prices they really have the best deals
Hofer is only in Austria and Slovenia as far as I know 😊
Nice history lesson. 👏
i just subscribed, be cause of 1 video, the one about Slovenia things straight talk. This is my 2nd of your vids, and for 2 years Aldi süd is the only place I get groceries, and I live in Acworth, Georgia, US.
Hi and welcome 😊
I shop there all the time, it's really good value, we also have another similar chain called Lidl, both do some really great deals.
I’ve never seen Car Barbara before, but I like her as a terrific alternative to Room Barbara, Hiking Barbara, or the very popular Traveling Barbara.
Never been in an Aldi but they had built stores back in Tennessee before I moved from there to North Dakota in 2014. That was an insane crowd for the opening of a grocery store. Maybe a different Aldi might have other products.
ALDI just bought Winn Dixie in the South East.
I had no idea about the origins of Aldi. It's called Aldi in Australia too.
It was obviously wrong to think that Slovenians are more civilized then the rest of us from former Yugoslavia. 2:42
We are definitely the same.
🇦🇺 I've never been in to the aldi, do they have grass fed beef ??
The Hofer ads in Slovenia are the same as in Austria...
I figure the prepackaged items keep the labor costs down. I haven't seen self-checkout in the Texas Aldi's.

wow - the aldi-opening in slovenia looked similar to the ones in switzerland, people stormed the stores...?

The funny thing is that both Aldi's are selling cigarettes now. At least here in Germany.
I have been to ALDI. It is like any supermarket in America, but they don't put the food you bought in bags. I won't be going back there again.
PMSL at @4:50 Let us say stackers are FTW
uhh nice your aldi is also Hofer just like in Austria.
The Aldi bakery section here in town (on the east coast) also stinks. But our Lidl has an actual bakery with fresh bread and pastries.
Well you see :), angry people in Aldi , also in Switzerland 😂, and in France 😂(even worst in France across the border ) , the customers just here in Aldi for the low price, so much inflation in Europe now
I don't get it, it's such a festive time, why people be raging 😅😅
In Germany, people take something from the fridge for instance and leave it somewhere else in the store. You see that all the time. Unlike in this video. Everything looks so in order!
Aldi is my favorite, for the price they have some of the best coffee ☕️, way better than Walmart.
Yup I like their coffee
Never understood plant based why not just eat the plants it would probably be healthier.
If you want fresh bread for Aldi prices, try Lidl if theres one near you. Theyve even got a slicer at some locations.
Not me getting a Hofer add on this video😂
Woah, an Aldi with a self check-out.
Yup, I was surprised too
I'll have to make a trip to the one in town.
Car Barbara - AND - Room Barbara 🤩Christmas has come early to the land of youtube
Find many Aldi-US products very good if not better than my area supermarkets and much cheaper. our Aldi in eastern US has a decent selection of German foods, especially around Christmas.
I've been to Aldi, once. It was next to my gym.
It was dog %$#@. The worst supermarket I've ever been in.
And now, I can't get those 5 minutes back!
I ❤Aldi.
Also half the shit was gone. Just people blocking isles looking lost af. Worse than Wal-Mart.
Love you barb
When I clicked on your video, I thought I accidentally clicked on an Isaac Arthur video...
Next video, Aldi in the UK
I was kind of surprised at the lack of German products. There are quite a few at the Aldi's I shop at. Also individual fruits. I'm in western NC.
Same here!!
❤
🎉

I used to buy potica at Hofer. I never checked if this was socially acceptable in Slovenia 😂
Nope... it's not acceptable... 100% sure... 🙂
It’s acceptable. Hofer sells many products that are actually made in Slovenia.
@@slomuzikaofficial Yes and the potica tasted pretty good. My favorite Slovenian bakery treat. 👍
If Hofer potica, good potica 😅
Lmao, they opened in Slovenia by discounting a bunch of electronics?
Aldi here in Belgium is always busy, but it only gets rushed like that. Is when they have cheap computers laptops television… or something that’s normally expensive.
Wow so much plastic in America, literally everything in plastic.
Yeah, all the vegetables are in plastic. It's almost like the supermarkets are prioritising looks.😄
Yeah people are the worst....especially in California.
Carbara vs. Storbara vs. Aparbara.
Why Hofer doesn't call an ambulance?
Because it goes lidl lidl lidl. 🤣🤣
Thank you, I'm gonna see myself out.
Yup, ACME is nothing to write home about either.
Lol why they dont make fresh bread? That is so strange. Also veggies section has too much plastics You don't see that at Hofer.
Lahku bi mela sponzor od Hoferja al pa Aldi Süd😊
We put so much crap in the food here..can wait to lose those chemicals
First comment by me
I shop at my local grocery store, not Aldi, not Wal-Mart. But it's all plastic wrapped poison anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter in the end.
Možu, tistmu k ga je naredu je dost bl savage :,D
I Guess we Swedes think its enough return Lidl lol
Do not buy meat at Aldi everything else is fine but meat is questionable
Thanks, I was wondering if they had some good pasture raised beef
Quality of product Aldi ?? Rubbish , horrible .And here in Switzerland we also have Lidl , even more cheaper and better, especially for fruits and vegetables . But Coop and Migros here in Switzerland much better, although of course more expensive. But always good to buy swiss chocolate like Toblerone or Lindt and Swiss cheese with cheaper prices in Aldi or Lidl :)
I prefer conad or coop
Love ❤️ you Barb ❤️
You barely have your Slovenian accent anymore.
