Sam’s gas can has the game Wurdle69 on it. Over the course of the game words are revealed based on the original clues. The final message reads “Elbow Liams Upper” and the last word was not revealed, but is probably “Torso” So, once upon a time I was running a game set in Thordak-occupied Emon, and one of the things my players were dealing with was a vampiric serial killer named Ixrattu Khar who’d taken over The Black Bastille. She ended up killing my brother’s character. She was barely mentioned in the old book, but then new Tal’dorei Campaign Guide has her as a major antagonist, with badass art and a Vestige. The book says her whole deal is… training assassins. I think maybe my brother will get some revenge. Any moments I missed? Feel free to post them here. Is it Thursday yet?
Beau asked about him a decent amount though- the other NPCs treated him as a cuckoo cloud-lander and so the party wasn't really able to discuss things with him outside of a message, which Jester would probably never have framed correctly or received a concise response from a mad scientist type of person lmao! Marisha is totally interested in Ruidis lore though, how could you not be after seeing the study in the Happy Fun Ball?
@@SMFAHgirl98 I think Caleb and Beau actually met with him though and spent 30 minutes trying to find interesting lore about it until they all decided it wasn't worth the time. But they did learn a few things more than with just a message !
Fits the settings. First was a classic kingdom scenario. The second had two fighting powers with lots of moral ambiguity. The third one is situated in a jungle land that has elephant people and all sorts of weird races.
tbf a str based rogue is weirdly very viable. All you need is a one-level dip into some class that gives you medium armour and you get the AC, everything else tends to be str/dex optional
@@colonel__corn Honestly you dont even need the dip. Chetney has 14 DEX, so with the extra ASIs Rogues get, he could easily take Moderately Armored and meet the max DEX mod bonus for mexium armor. With a breastplate, since thats what Chetney has, throw on a shield and you have 19 AC
Wasn't it Liam who said when Travis' character was first introduced, that he could have been a werewolf gnome this campaign? I have got to go check how nervous Travis looked, or if he had a solid poker face. because he absolutely CALLED IT
FOUND IT in episode 9 - 2:35:30 Travis missed his chance (credit to Flando Maltrizian). Liam says: You could have been a gnome werewolf Travis, you blew it! Travis pauses and thinks about how to respond then speaks as chetney to reply "#*%*, Reset, back to one".
Liam is my go-to example of how to describe a turn. Be it with Vax, Caleb or Orym, he seems to always know what he's aiming for when his turn arrives, and his descriptions are both concise and engaging. With Caleb, for example, he made it a point to describe gestures, material components being used, sound effects, and specify the spell/action he was triggering all within a very small time frame. Awesome stuff.
I honestly think Travis is the biggest Critical Role fan there is. He gets so excited and hype for everyone else's stories and awesome moments. I WISH I had a player like him at my table.
Really got jazzed when Taliesin raged and Ashley gave him the "Yeah, you are!" just like Travis did for her. All of us Barbarian's need a legit hype woman!
I find it hilarious that they somehow managed to have a turtle that didn't attack Fjord. Fjord wasn't there, of course, but that shouldn't have stopped them.
don't ever say things around the dm, it hasnt happened yet but my main char i accidentally once said "the only way this necklace leaves my neck is if someone chops my head off" so i know it involves that :(
@@Nug_180 I have a player in my game (who shouts out random things every couple of seconds) learning this lesson the hard way. its fun hearing him say thing just to immediately back pedal and loudly exclaim "out of game"
Imagine future adventurers looking for a specific obscure book and when they find it they find: - Important pages torn out - Very thorough notes in Zemnian forgotten folded in the back - A pressed flower - Dicks drawn in the corners of dozens of pages And they would wonder "who in the hell checked this book out last??"
Dude, that fucking deep, airy, raspy “I lied..!” 1:23:40 From werewolf Chetney made me tingle with excitement. Travis finally gets his werewolf character, while also playing his favorite old man character, we can literally only expect good things to come. Immediate favorite.
I was thinking the same thing. I bet Dani is involved. And thank you for all your hard work. It's so nice to see the words someone said that I can't make out in the audio, and bam! The spoken words are attributed to who said them! That is golden.
@@xmateosx IIRC they pay a professional closed captioning team to caption their videos nowadays and I too find the captions to be essential and amazing
I love how Liam always finds new ways to integrate his character's backstory with their abilities. His job was a bodyguard and his abilities are about protecting and drawing the attention away from his friends. It's such a great way to express his personality through combat.
He's obviously never seen the table we had when I was growing up. It's legs were 2 big crosses at each end. I'm pretty sure there are whole table and chair sets made these days that use less wood than just one of those legs. My Dad liked to point out that it would never move when we'd run into it rough playing as kids. I'd hate to be on the other end of that table charging 20ft at me.
Idk if the Critical Role crew reads these, but this is just a suggestion. Plz no hate. I really like the mini’s and the art and work Matt puts into the encounters. Could maybe at intermission or as initiative is rolled , get pictures or stills of the mini’s or battle maps on the screen? Maybe how they have mini character sheets pop up, but with the mini’s and monsters. I watch on my phone at work sometimes, and I’m sure others do as well and seeing the work he does can be difficult. Much love from a random critter!
On the same note, but different reason. I'm legally blind. I haven't been able to follow the battlemaps for years. I can see the condition rings, though. So that's nice. Would be very nice with something more legible, like in the break, or like every 15 minutes during combat or somethng.
I thought of this in this very episode, there was a pretty good shot of FCG a top of the stairs, and then I wanted to see chetney mini so bad after the change, and it was never caught in camera... This would be great!
@@joeystuart2949 misdirection - the character portrait as he transforms shows bloodhunter (4), and he would need at least 3 levels in bloodhunter to get the transformation
And next campign, Travis, Ashley and Taliesin will cheer on the next Barbarian, I hope it’s Sam as a Kobold Barbarian that when he rages gets anchor arms like in SpongeBob but nothing else changes on the Kobold
Grog: Polite asking for permission to his pals to wreak shit up. Yasha: Resigned plea for her inner strength to be enough. Ashton: Warning so you have half a second to try and survive.
I love how you can see Robbie acting all shy around the group, knowing he's the newest one to the group, but when he really starts to roleplay Dorian, he gets very comfortable and confident.
If Laudna doesn't message the Nightmare King to ask, "whats the first word you think of when it comes to our group?" that will be a missed opportunity. Group has to stay consistent. >_>
Chetney: *starts taking his clothes off in the middle of negotiation* Me: lol okay that sounds like something Chetney would absolutely do Chetney: *starts taking clothes off in the middle of combat* Me: Oh gods, what even the fuck is happening
@@RaXXha I mean it is one of my big pet peeves with fantasy, that characters often seem to only own one single set of clothing, so that is definitely possible 😅
I've realized that my favourite thing in the WHOLE WORLD is how Robbie stares DIRECTLY into the camera with a "Is this guy serious?" look through ALL of Sam's ads. I love him.
Two wood elves and a halfling walk into a bar... The halfling sits at the bar and says: "Two green faeries and a half pint of stout" The bartender raises an eyebrow and replies: "yeah I see that but what would you like to drink?"
@@roticet are we really sure she's a human? The card said Chet was a rogue, but we know that's bullshit now. Maybe she just looks human? (Also, FCG was there too)
Blood hunter Lycans don't spread the curse like most Lycans do. They harness the curse through ritual and alchemy. She could get bitten and nothing would happen but taking damage.
You can blame Travis for this, he's had a hard on for werewolves ever since their trip into the fae realm chasing Vexalias vestige, maybe even before that who knows but it was obvious from that point. Every time there was a chance for Travis to include a werewolf in the story or to try to visit them in the fae realm he was super excited both as Grog and as Travis. He also included a werewolf in Bertrand's backstory during the search for grog oneshot. The man knows what he likes and wants, I seen the whole 'Chetney is a werewolf' thing coming the moment they started referring to Girge as 'the wild man' and there being talk of dire wolves in the spires. I didn't see him blindsiding us with Chetney being a blood hunter, I thought he was definitely a rogue right up until he scratched himself with the chisel in this episode. When he started stripping off at the start of the fight I was almost giddy waiting for him to drop that bomb on the players, I could see it coming but it didn't make it any less fun. There's a reason Travis is my second favourite CR member behind Sam 'I am going to derail you're fucking campaign and sponsors and troll you about it' Reigal.
“As harsh as the world may seem at times, there are good people out there. It’s easy for them to be drowned out by the noise.” - Lord Eshteross “You can accomplish anything if you believe in yourself, or if you have wealthy parents.” - F.C.G.
I feel that way about most of the characters. CP 1 was very archetypical and CP 2 was kind of like a "okay now to do something sharply different!" But CP 3 seems to be "okay ive tried a couple things, now I'm gonna make something I have a good idea I'll absolutely adore playing"
Love the image of : Ira hits Dorian then Dorian falls to the ground, Ira then turned to Orym and said "you're next" and then suddenly dorian just sit up like he just have a crazy hangover, dazed looking at Ira then got scared, lie back down and alligator rolled away. And then Ira went over and swiped Orym he slumped down, Ira looking proudly over everyone else and then Orym just stand back up pulling a "captain America" , is like perfect comedic timing.
I *need* someone to animate when the two attacks went over the short characters' heads and the guy said "Ah, right! Right, that's on me." It'd be so funny
I do larp. During a battle, my friend had all his limbs stabbed, so technically still wasn't dead. Since the scenario goal was to bring back these fist sized foam bricks to our side, he alligator-rolled to our enemies' side, got a brick in his teeth, and the opposing army let him get almost all the way back before killing him, just to rub it in.
As a fellow Persian fan who watches this series passionately, I just realized the group that they're looking for called "Gorgynei" is actually what we call werewolf in Persian. Gotta respect and appreciate Matt's attention to details even when it comes to names.
He also used Simurgh/سیمرغ which is one of persian myths that has similiarities to phoenixes. So glad that he is using persian myth and words in his world.
Never before have I had such an urge to comfort a man than when Matt screamed in frustration: "Yes, it is fucking lame!" when his dice wouldn't max damage his friends.
The moment when Liam told Travis he missed out on being a werewolf a few episodes back makes me wonder if Travis's small freakout was him thinking Liam already knew he wasn't a Rogue, and just played it off as oh shit I could have.
Circa 3:28:00 - can we just talk about how mad the group sounds coming to Lord Eshteross talking about the Nightmare King, super soldiers, werewolves, paper that's now blank, crystals that make furniture come to life... and Eshteross is just like "Yes I believe them" WITHOUT QUESTION? I love him.
Laudna getting coached in theatrical presentation has the same energy as Beau getting coached on how to be nice and smile like a normal polite person, but with entirely different reasons for failure.
The power stance will always remind me of keekee.. I saw laudna turn into the VOICE OF THE TEMPEST just for a sec... Until she started talking. 'Bend a knee' no no no no not like that creepy lady
This gang needs a NAME. I imagine Laudna actually going through with a presentation at the ball but, trying too hard, accidentally pronounces the name the 'NEW BuDDIES' ...
1:16:55 "there's a thousand rules in this game, we learn them bit by bit by bit." Really great comment from Liam, I love how these guys look after each other like that.
I didn't really notice until this comment, but Orym really does have Captain America vibes. Relatively serious, with a few snarky one liners. A good guy with good motives for the most part, trying to get others to do their best. Powerful, but less flashy and magical than a lot of his friends. Love and reverence for where he's from. Etc
I said that in a different video, one of the clips, don't recall which. I'm fairly certain you're right, yes. And probably for spending almost a full episode and numerous HP opening a flacking door in campaign One, as well.
@@brendanhart517 there was a room that was absolutely trashed, but there was just a chair placed in the room, seeming untouched or damaged. They all got real suspicious of it, and kept harking back to it, but it was just a chair.
52:00 - he used Crimson Rite and we didn't even noticed. And Matts "For bonus action you need two-weapon fighting" was the subtle way to remind Travis that Crimson Rites take bonus action to use.
Speak for yourself! lol I was trying to determine if he was ACTUALLY doing a rite, or being a massive troll because Travis knew we all thought he was a werewolf lol.
@@JDOTczar I was squinting so hard at Travis going, If you turn out to be pulling the "Crazy Old Man" card I'm going to kill you lol! Cause He had already taken off his shirt and I was like... Travis... Travis You better mean it when you talk to me like that... Travis...Ok he just dragged the chisel across his chest... Travis don't you LIE TO ME!!! AWOOOOOOOOO!!!!! AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! YES!!!
Man... thinking about how Ashton use to roll with a group that prioritised self-preservation over getting caught, or being in a fatal situation - every man for themselves kind of deal... but then we got Ashton over here body guarding the hell out of a fallen Dorian & F.C.G from debris when they very well could get pelted next - they've got a new crew and it's as they said before: Family look out for each other I love this campaign so much thus far, my heart
I think ashton really apreciates fcg for being so kind and empathic. Ashton is a dick and hates many people, himself too... i belive, but FCG cheers him up so much that maybe he is starting to not hate that much
I don't think its so much prioritizing self preservation as much as doing what was the right move in the moment for the family as a whole. Needs of the many as it were. Because clearly Ashton's opinion was they did the right thing, and if they had stayed theyd simply all be up to their eyes in debt no different to Ashton. If not worse, its entirely possible Miss Hexum would've let some or all the crew rot or die if she had them all in her net. And more importantly at the time none of them knew if Ashton was even going to survive, nor what Hexum would or wouldnt do. Its a hard call but sometimes you have to leave someone behind. Taliesin has told a story of a prior game with Matt where they nearly TPK'd and would have if the two non paralyzed members hadnt fled. Its hard but also its something that sometimes there really isnt a good alternative to. It is cold that they never tried to get back in touch but they might not even know Ashton's alive. And in Ashton's mind clearly working off his debt and taking the fall was just "what you do for family" and promised to punch them for it later because "thats how you work shit out with family" At the very least it speaks volumes of his own loyalty. But so does his business dealings, his allies and enemies. All of it.
Honestly, this episode has made Orym my favourite character. How he treated and acted around The Anger and Ela knowing what had just happened to them, Orym knows exactly what that feels like and Liam acted that scene perfectly. His empathy, the way he talks, his backstory, how he treats people, his curiosity, he's just such a lovable character.
There was also his reaction to Dorian and Fearne’s talk about childrens stories being ways of teaching them about the evils and dangers of the world, specially Dorian saying “Wolves in the night, that sort of thing”, and Chetney repeats it sadly. Fjord is my favourite character of all Critical Role but Chetney might end up taking that spot, he’s so cool.
@@pultofcat8615 I meant in the cast. I kinda had a feeling. I noticed the sly look Travis had when someone mentioned that he missed his chance at being a werewolf.
@@chrisnewman2737 nah I mean in the cast. Go rewatch the two strip shows and then the change. How they reacted They’re suspicious folk, they’re not gonna let a Viridian/Vilya situation happen again with so many clues. They’d prolly be theorizing in dms for weeks about it
"He doesn't YET!" was the best possible way to respond imo. I'm just imaging a tiny little top hate with a little fae flower in it. That'd be freaking amazing
More I watch this the more FGC sounds like someone who has so many issues that in order to have a semblance of control they have to solve everyone else's problems while never acknowledging his own.
Lol @ 3:09:25 Dorian: "What is it with this group! Everyone is hiding their..." Chet: "Right! They're hiding behind layers!" Dorian: "I was specifically talking about you" 🤣🤣
3:36:32 - "Ginang Ela Lumas, who is the matriarch of the family," Thank you Matt for this casual Filipino easter egg. Felt giggly on how damn good he said it. Ginang (Tagalog) Noun - Mrs, Madam, Lady
Why did Chetney’s transformation make me tear up?? Just their hype and excitement and the pure joy of the moment. Everything that makes this show special in one badass moment.
Yeah, I gotta admit the smile on my face was accompanied by tears in my eyes - just how well he executed the transformation performance and the reaction of the party... it was amazing! Liams excitement was just so contagious!
The real highlight of this episode is Dorian taking Chetney for his first massage ngl. I couldn't stop wheezing the whole moment, and naked Orym passing is just the cherry on top.
Just imagine an ecstatic, naked Dorian enthusiastically explaining massages to an also naked Chetney, while Orym, who is naked as well, passes by in the background going through his motions in his own world. I'm pretty sure I watched that bit 5 times in a row and laughed so hard every time from the mental image.
eeeeeeeeeh It's still his fault lol, just from one degree of separation. He still needs to speak up and say he needs diamonds, and if he doesn't then it's DEFINITELY his fault lol! It's still genius though, he cut out a big chunk of math in a game comprised mostly of math.
@@mayaenglish5424 I get what you mean, meta-wise it's still Sam's role in the party so i'd expect him to say something, but in-game roleplay wise, it's up to the other partymembers to "stock" their healerbot. We know ofcourse that there's more to FCG, but he's still "just" an autometon designed for a purpose.
@@zarahandrahilde9554 Right, I suppose what I mean is, If he doesn't tell them he NEEDS diamonds in the first place, then it's still his fault because meta knowledge of course we all know that clerics need a diamond worth 300 gold that is consumed upon completion of the spell, but in game none of the other characters would have any reason to know that, resurrections are rare in this world. And once that's been established moving forward I would still expect him to keep track of how many diamonds he has/ needs because they're his spell components, the other characters just need to fork over the cash! lol. Plus they're all pretty sure he's sentient at this point and are actively trying to convince HIM of his own sentience. so that "just an automaton" stuff won't fly with the party for long I suspect lol.
@@mayaenglish5424 Nah, wont fly long with them at all xD They've pretty much been dealing with him as a sentient from the start, which is nice i guess but also a bit of a missed oppertunity (in my eyes) for a pretty cool character development arc. There's much more to him ofcourse, but it would be cool to see him win over a sceptic over time, instead of FCG himself being the sceptic about his own self.
@@zarahandrahilde9554 True, but then maybe he should have played this character last campaign with the asshole group lol. Rather than the the ones who are like, "sentient or not, you seem like a nice guy!" I think he'll have to convince many, many NPC's of his personhood in the future judging by how Matt's had everyone react to him so far so not a completely lost opportunity.
**Ira knocks out Dorian** Dorian, a second later, stealthily: "I lived bitch." **Ira knocks out Orym** Orym, a second later, loudly: "I lived fey-nus."
Best part is Robbie, true to form, underselling his nat 20 while Marisha is freaking out because she understood what the nat 20 meant during a death save.
I like to think that was him trying to get Ashton’s rage in ahead of the initiative because I feel that could/should have been justified in this particular moment lol
SPOILERS... Honestly, I've rewatched Chetney's transformation an unhealthy amount of times now. Travis' improv lines were incredible "Wait till you get a load of me!" goosebumps. Then everyone going absolutely feral. Especially Liam, who had such a childlike excitement ❤️❤️ Then Robbie and Laura realising that the reveal was coming trying not to smile too early. The in-game start date for the episode was in the year 843. Sam’s gas can has the game Wurdle69 on it. Over the course of the game words are revealed based on the original clues. The final message reads “Elbow Liams Upper” and the last word was not revealed, but is probably “Torso”
So, once upon a time I was running a game set in Thordak-occupied Emon, and one of the things my players were dealing with was a vampiric serial killer named Ixrattu Khar who’d taken over The Black Bastille. She ended up killing my brother’s character. She was barely mentioned in the old book, but then new Tal’dorei Campaign Guide has her as a major antagonist, with badass art and a Vestige. The book says her whole deal is… training assassins. I think maybe my brother will get some revenge.

They treated that scholar in campaign two who was obsessed with the moons like he was the most boring NPC imaginable, _and matt took that personally._
Beau asked about him a decent amount though- the other NPCs treated him as a cuckoo cloud-lander and so the party wasn't really able to discuss things with him outside of a message, which Jester would probably never have framed correctly or received a concise response from a mad scientist type of person lmao! @@SMFAHgirl98 I think Caleb and Beau actually met with him though and spent 30 minutes trying to find interesting lore about it until they all decided it wasn't worth the time. But they did learn a few things more than with just a message !

Liam is my go-to example of how to describe a turn. Be it with Vax, Caleb or Orym, he seems to always know what he's aiming for when his turn arrives, and his descriptions are both concise and engaging.

I love how Matt tried to skip the spa RP and the cast said, NOPE! We're doing this.
Orym, Captain Exandria: "I can do this all day."
Etc
He also seems to be trying to find a way to get revenge for the attack on the ashari, one may say that he's *an avenger*
And he's very handy with a shield.
Does The Stormlord have some ancient artifact hammer that he could try to wield?
@@jackakimbo5718

We all agree that this is Matt’s revenge for the chair incident last campaign.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I said that in a different video, one of the clips, don't recall which.
I'm fairly certain you're right, yes. And probably for spending almost a full episode and numerous HP opening a flacking door in campaign One, as well.

Man... thinking about how Ashton use to roll with a group that prioritised self-preservation over getting caught, or being in a fatal situation - every man for themselves kind of deal... but then we got Ashton over here body guarding the hell out of a fallen Dorian & F.C.G from debris when they very well could get pelted next - they've got a new crew and it's as they said before:
Family look out for each other
I love this campaign so much thus far, my heart
This was actually the most beautiful moment of this episode ♥️ and shows you that he is a real good guy
He found his crew. Nothing is taking them away.
I think ashton really apreciates fcg for being so kind and empathic. Ashton is a dick and hates many people, himself too... i belive, but FCG cheers him up so much that maybe he is starting to not hate that much
Ashton also accepts he him pronouns and for the sake of grammar I believe we should respect that
I don't think its so much prioritizing self preservation as much as doing what was the right move in the moment for the family as a whole.
And in Ashton's mind clearly working off his debt and taking the fall was just "what you do for family" and promised to punch them for it later because "thats how you work shit out with family"
At the very least it speaks volumes of his own loyalty. But so does his business dealings, his allies and enemies. All of it.
Halfway through the fight the gnome is a terrier and the robot is a turtle.
*Matt Mercer voice* I Love Dungeons and Dragons
Honestly, this episode has made Orym my favourite character. How he treated and acted around The Anger and Ela knowing what had just happened to them, Orym knows exactly what that feels like and Liam acted that scene perfectly. His empathy, the way he talks, his backstory, how he treats people, his curiosity, he's just such a lovable character.
Before starting the campaign I expected him to be a bit boring but yeah, he is like chill and cool, never expected to like him so much
I love everyone freaking out about the moving furniture and Taliesin just goes “I knew it!”
And when he shouts at Lord esteros that they finally figured it out
"Recognize the alpha."
"The wolf hunts alone."
There were so many signs....
Agreed.
He's been dropping hints all along and no one picked up on it.
@@chrisnewman2737 I think the cast knew, quite a few were all like “I fucking knew it” when he changed.

I meant in the cast. I kinda had a feeling.
I noticed the sly look Travis had when someone mentioned that he missed his chance at being a werewolf.
@@chrisnewman2737 nah I mean in the cast. Go rewatch the two strip shows and then the change. How they reacted
They’re suspicious folk, they’re not gonna let a Viridian/Vilya situation happen again with so many clues. They’d prolly be theorizing in dms for weeks about it
"Does he have a tiny hat?"
Man, that'd complete his look for sure.
I mean Thad be a pretty interesting thing to try and play in dnd
And not a far fetched reason for someone to become a cleric either

Why did Chetney’s transformation make me tear up?? Just their hype and excitement and the pure joy of the moment. Everything that makes this show special in one badass moment.
Yeah, that was awesome! And it made Chet's previous actions make perfect sense.
Yeah, I gotta admit the smile on my face was accompanied by tears in my eyes - just how well he executed the transformation performance and the reaction of the party... it was amazing! Liams excitement was just so contagious!
Travis has wanted a reason to be a lycanthrope for a long time.
Me too! Had to watch it multiple times to see everyone's reaction. Liam and Sam's reaction especially were so fun
Because of how happy it makes Travis. He loves werewolves, so this was a dream come true for him.
Omg I hope someone animates that scene 🤣👍
It was the highlight for me as well 😂😂
Roobie is a national tresure.
so true!
Refusing to handle his own money is a genius move by FCG.
If ever he is short of a diamond to revive someone, it'll never be his fault.
eeeeeeeeeh It's still his fault lol, just from one degree of separation.

They joked about the chair in the basement in the last campaign, so Matt decided to make a plot thread just about a guy making evil magical furniture.
Taliesin is just so angry at 26:00. He's been saying that the furniture was relevant since episode one and no one listened to him.
I like to think that was him trying to get Ashton’s rage in ahead of the initiative because I feel that could/should have been justified in this particular moment lol
