I don't know which is worse...the fact that a developer of the game doesn't understand the mechanics of his own game, or that he's a Canadian who doesn't know shit about how Hockey works! lol Teams outshoot their opponents ALL THE TIME, and still lose the game. This whole thing is mental.
@@ErizotDread I don't understand Patrick or how he views DBD in an entirely different light to anyone who has actually played the game, and I question almost everything he said (especially trying to justify the "skill" part of skill based match making).
I have no idea why he thought comparing DBD (an asymmetric 4v1 game with each side having different, conflicting objectives) to hockey (a game where 2 teams of equal size try to obtain the same objective) would help in trying to justify his view on "skill". The worst part in my mind, is that the questions and answers for that stream were selected and prepared in advance. So they had that written down, read it, (presumably) ran it by everyone and decided "yeah, this is the best analogy."
Really shows how much the lead game designer knows about the game they're in charge of.

@@g80gzt Patrick clearly has this super shallow view to what skill is and how it factors into game design. He thinks that a victory exclusively exists through playing well, "all skilled plays lead to victories." This is incredibly shallow and a mere fraction of victorious possibilities.
Even in war there are a myriad of ways to succeed in any set number of goals. Attrition, economic suffocation, and excellent battle strategy are just a few. To think victory = skilled play is insultingly superficial.
According to his incorrect assumptions, a claudette hiding Ina bush is as skilled as a Meg outrunning the killer for five gens.
And to go a step further, he's completely misunderstanding even the implementation of the design of his own game; answer me this, if victory means playing skilled and well regardless, and actually winning/losing is the only variable that matters, why are players rewarded with bloodpoints for doing things that are not to do with escaping or even dying? Why is a survivor rewarded for altruism? Why is a killer rewarded for gen pressure? Neither of these factors have any affect on that specific player succeeding in killing/escaping, and yet they're incentivised to do it.
The devs clearly don't even understand what they're making, how it functions, or how people play it. And yet they're talking down to the playerbase as if they do.
In my opinion, a failure to grasp a clear understanding of the actual function of the game you're developing, how and why players play it, and then to even attack players who criticise you, is a blatant failure of the position. There needs to be serious restructuring at Behaviour. Many of these leads are unfit to lead in my opinion.

I dont even watch dowsey but holy shit this man is going insane and i love it.
The interesting thing is that in order to counter these killer strategies, you basically *have* to be a swf on comms. For Facecamping Bubba, you have to just sit on gens. For afk pig, you have to 99 gens and do the strat you talked about. For goalkeeper twins, someone has to touch the other gate immediately as the last gen pops.
But for the average solo queue, even for solo queue at high mmr, you’re probably fucked because it is impossible for everyone to be on the same page. And that’s a big flaw in game design that even adding interactions icons as the devs will be doing won’t fix.
From my experience since mmr, the matchmaking has made solo queueing a lot less enjoyable due to the flaws in calculating mmr.

They could add aura reading to all survivors on all other survivors doing activities for 1 per 30 seconds ish, and thus simulate swf coordination using in game mechanics, as base kit.
But this would require rebalancing hooks and some other stuff, so too much work. Better to selldlcs.

@@karimsonsafehold9233 even if they added that, there's no way of telling others a strategy or coordinating something that complex (i mean, sure must be a low percentage a team can pull it off, but not always. not everyone is one the same page in knowledge of certain killer's strategies).
@@Noriii24 RIght. I remember playing epic games loot shooter but the group of 3 was dying all the time in the fire drake boss fight. I kept chugging fire resistance potions to show them that was how to reduce fire damage, but it had no chat. So they did not know to get fire potions. ANd they ended up leaving, which made me solo the drake now that it was easier.
Meanwhile it feels like a war between the devs and the dbd community. This won't have a happy outcome
Playerbase has already regressed lower than its April 2021 numbers. I can't wait to see it lose an entire year's growth in a couple months.

As someone new to playing the game but has heard random things about it throughout the years. Yeah BHVR definitely deserves the criticism, that video and another incident where totems(?) and Doctor was hard nerfed because a dev lost to it really shows how little they actually understand their own game. And even in brown and silver ranks I get survivors with full meta perks very consistently, but killers are super diverse in their perks. There definitely needs to be changes.
Remember when Matt got shitstomped as hag and soon after balance was shifted a tiny bit towards killers and hag?

I feel like the reason killers have diverse builds is they have a lot of good perks but with survivor you HAVE to have certain perks in your build to not get tunnelled or slugged/to survive solo queue so every survivor has the same perks bc unfortunately you will 99% die if u dont have those

I recently tried third seal, plaything, dark devotion and surveillance build on Legion to try to do gens with survivors.
It was a ton of fun compared to "high ranks". If there is no tbag for not getting 8 hooks and gives mercy, I would happily get 0 hook just to achieve my stupid goal.

I rarely escape and have no skill, yet I get paired up with the most skillful of players by DBD terms and what Dowsey pointed out. Madness, I tell you! But as Matt has said "I think we did a pretty good job so far"

@@johnlucas2838 just like there is a meta perk for higher mmr, certain builds and subtle hacks will let people win more. tHus moving them up the mmr. The more active they are, the more problematic and higher they go up. So if you don't let survivors go every now and again, maybe a 2 or 4 man escape, your chances of seeing a cheater increases ; ) Karma.
I think Dowsey losing his Twitch shirts just made it where he had nothing to lose. I don't think he was a Fog Whisperer or anything, so when you have nothing really to lose, you start expressing how you really feel. He's not wrong. The devs have a strange way of looking at the game. He's just saying what everyone is thinking and he has a big enough audience that it will get noticed and supported.

its to go up and down, on mmr. If you only base it on hooks, then cases were you get 8 hooks and kill 0 survivors will get you up the ladder. Not to mention that you can farm every game. Kills work best, because Dowsey, the way he played, that only will get you so far up the ladder, against good survivors you won't get 4k's facecamping.
A 12 hook game would be a 4k though.
@@kamehamehaDdragon But 8 hooks is 2 people dead and one person still on death hook if you tunnel the entire game. So all this does is encourage tunneling and camping. What does "farming" have to do with anything anyway? SBMM doesn't fix "farming" if you're talking about hooking everyone twice then letting everyone get away for BP. And even then, the optimal way to play IS to spread pressure.
@@davidburke4101 They should have based it on the emblem system, except find the way to tune it right. But BHVR being BHVR, they based it on tunneling and camping. The flaws for survivor players, is that they encourage SWFS and being selfish teammates by making Escapes be the only thing that counts as skillful.
@@kamehamehaDdragon The sweat based mm system is mostly designed to get sweaty/meta build players up the ranks and away from the newbies entering the game. If newbies get crushed, Behavior's market division complains.

haha I did this the other day and had the same luck, one died trying to escape, downed the only healed one with my noed and the other two attempted to get their helmets off and died doing that too. ended up with a 4k while I was afk 90% of the match.

The way he's playing is how I play this game often to remind Survivors that the fun of the game is entirely based on the Killer's mood.

I just looked it up for the first time. Patrick is actually wrong about the hockey analogy in the first place. The standings for NHL at least are determined in a +2 +1 +0 system. +2 for winning in regulation time, +1 to both teams if tied at the end of regulation, +1 for winning in overtime, and +0 for losing. So whoever wins always gains +2, the determining factor is if the losing team gets +1 or +0.
But that's just the surface level of it. The number of games played is also factored in. IE the team that has the same "standing points" as another in less games did better more consistently, and therefore is ranked higher. It gets more complicated when going from division to conference, but at that point the scale is too big to matter.
Let's do it anyway. In a division, teams are sorted by points. In a conference, the top 3 from each division compete. Even if Team 3 in Division B has less points than Team 6 in Division D, because it's Team 3 in its division, it goes to the conference playoffs. Two wildcards are the next-highest conference-wide outside of the three-per-division slots.
When you think about it, Patrick's analogy is accurate but for the wrong reason. "Shots to goals to wins" is not what the NHL cares about. Just like "things that lead to kills/escapes" aren't what MMR cares about. All the NHL cares about is who is doing better at key points: End of regulation time, and end of Overtime. All DBD cares about is how many survivors have escaped or are dead by the time all survivors are one or the other.

This just goes to show that Behavior shouldn't piss off their content creators because their game is built of one of the flimsiest foundations I've ever seen and is just so exploitable, made even worse that their players know more about how their game works then they do and it shows in this video: the devs know less about their game then their players, these sort of playstyles demonstrate that in full force, a beacon of Behavior's incompetence.
I've been following Dowsey for a bit and I can confidently say this is his best era. I'm here for the chaotic energy!

Dowsey did a really good job. We need to emphasize the issue !! I think the issues of the devs are that they made the mistage to call it "skilled" based MM and to not balance the game around escapes and kills in regards to their perception. If they wanna keep the game mechanics as they are they need to change the MM system so it is not based on escapes and kills !
The devs just highlighted by themselves a huge issue of the game namely that escapes and kills are not the only things that matter and should be looked at to make the game more fun and balanced !

You know what? I've been recently only playing basement bubba and, there's nothing stopping me.
All they had to do was incorporate the team’s escape rate in the MMR to improve it. But I guess Dowsey was initially wrong. He proved skills=kills.

It's complicated, but I think the main problem with DBD is that it should be a team game, but BHVR can't admit that. They want to reinforce that playing selfishly and escaping while your teammates die is a legitimate strategy in this game. It's understandable, because it's part of the horror movie fantasy--sometimes you have to let your friends die to survive. But if you want to make the shift from casual game to competitive, and therefore want to incorporate SBMM, you can't have it both ways. It should be kills vs team escapes. If one survivor does while buying time for the other 3 to escape, that should be a win for the team.

The most skilled player.
The real issue with the hockey analogy is that the killer is the goalie and the survivors are all offense players, and player stats are important and are recorded. Wayne Gretzky lost games. Gordie Howe lost games. But they were known for a very long while as extremely high skill players.
A players shots on goal stats are recorded.
Same with a goalies saves and rejections. So Patrick saying that goals are the only thing that matters on an individual level makes no sense, he doesn't even understand his own game.
