The biggest difference, and an important one, is that the grand national was a high performance version of a plain-jane car. Half of the legacy is that it was a sinister sleeper from the factory. Given that the v6 mustang ( and camaro, and challenger) are cars where a much higher performance version is available, they don’t have a sleeper effect. Its a platform built for more power, rather than a platform built for far less. Thats not to rag on boosted v6’s, but rather to say the comparison doesn’t work for me.

    • @PeterGriffin-kb2hf
      @PeterGriffin-kb2hf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The true modern grand national is the 3800 w-body. Same base engine thats modernized and some come factory supercharged so the engine can handle a turbo well. Some people build them and theyre great sleepers.

The 3.7 was a great V6. The problem is that by the time Ford got around to making it, it was too little too late. The V6 was already shadowed and stigmatized by the bad reputation of the 3.8 and 4.0 motors.

I have a 2011 GT (2 cats, no mufflers). Really love the sound of that, but the boosted V6 in this video is really nice! It sounds almost exotic. The 3.7 has a governor that stops the fun at 115mph due to the driveshaft. With ~500 hp on tap, I would suggest a installing stronger driveshaft.

(Little back story; I rolled the car after pulling it out of storage and the next day it was freezing rain) back to the point I still have that car and had alot of fun with it when it was new. I've never had to do anything major mechanically and believe it or not it was faster then my my fox 5.0 and some of the stock fox 5.0s on the street due to mostly their power loss in age. I had one just like this except it was a Premium and it was absolutely fantastic. Just enough power to hoon and the engine sounds great when you rev it out. Cheap to buy and cheap to mod too. I did Air raid intake, MBR Exhaust, MPT Tune, and Steeda springs all for like $1500. The problem isn't that the cyclone cars are bad, it's that the GT is just better in every way. And these days an S197 GT is really not that much more than a 3.7. If I had some extra cash I'd pick up an early S550 3.7 to hoon on backroads and a '19 GT to actually build.
One thing is for certain though, no one should buy an Ecoboost Mustang under any circumstances.

I think the decision between purchasing a Coyote versus purchasing a Cyclone and boosting it depends on the difference of depreciation, and personal preference. It is entirely possible for the Cyclones to depreciate enough to make boosting one to get comparable power to a Coyote to make sense. Although If one truly prefers the sound and feel of a Coyote it would be better to stick it out and purchase the Coyote.
As far as longevity I have not researched either engine very much, but from what I remember the Coyote is very reliable, and the Cyclone strikes me as being pretty reliable as well. Once boosted the longevity and integrity of any engine is sacrificed. So if you want an S550 for a short to medium amount of time, and you are ok with the sound and feel of a boosted V6 go for it. If you want the S550 and you plan on having it for more than a few years and potentially for life, it makes more sense to just purchase the Coyote.
PS David: The highlights are a little eccentric but cool. Keep up the good work!

You get a 3.7 v6 mustang, because it's lighter and more balanced for tracking and with a blower and can whip a coyote on the street. That engine is a racing engine and if stronger then the coyote block. It's the same reason people buy a 350z, light and nimble. The same can be said for the BRZ. With basic suspension mods it can out do something with double the HP when Auto crossed.

This will get some hate, but I happen to really like modern V6’s. I think they are perfect for a young or casual enthusiast, and adding boost to the mix makes them a total sleeper. A 6th gen V6 Camaro has 335 hp, that’s 20 HP more than a 4.6 mustang from 8 years ago, and with boost those cars can make 450 whp. That is enough to complete with most bolt on N/A V8s. I saw a procharged V6 run low 11s on pump gas, that’s merging onto stock Hellcat territory. Boosted V6’s are no joke. I respect the hell out of anyone with a fast V6, that goes for Mustangs, Challengers, 350Z/370Zs, G35/G37s, and especially the Camaro’s. They are not what they used to be, I consider them full on sports cars. But that’s just my 2 cents.

I had 3.73 gears on mine and beat all the 2005-2010 GT's that tried to stoplight race me. Procharging it never made sense, it was like $7000 or something crazy. Plus you had to fix the exploding driveshaft issues that plagued certain years. Back in 2014, for any 2011+ cyclone V6 you could find, adding the cost of the procharger instantly had you right in GT pricerange. so it never made sense financially, unless you bought a salvage V6. Even now it would make no sense to build a procharged V6 since a used coyote could be had for the same money after its all said and done.

The old 3.8 from 99-04 (was slow) but you can’t kill them. The first car I ever bought from a dealership was a 2000 ( in 2005) v6 5 speed and I put an m90 supercharger off of a Buick and with a pulley and a tune it made 300hp at the tires. It wasn’t a monster but it was a fun car and that 3.8 took a beating and didn’t care

There will always be some disagreement within the mustang community about engine size...but in its entire history this car has had multiple options for its customers, thats whats kept it alive. thats what allows the "community" to be just that...it has allowed us to be unique and take on different challenges to make it something different from the other guy. Not having a V8 in it, shouldn't take anything away from what it really is...a piece of american history.

Lol RIP, I boosted my v6 and ran 9.88 at 138mph in the 1/4. The cyclone engine is stout and the limit on a stock block is 600+hp on e85. But once you have to build one it gets expensive fast. Building a coyote is probably cheaper and is for sure easier as parts are more readily available.

Building a coyote- and I'm speaking from experience -is about the same price but consumables when owning a coyote is a whole different thing. you won't be getting 30 miles per gallon on the highway like you do in a boosted v6 you have six spark plugs and six coils to deal with instead of 8 and a whole hell of a lot less oil.

Joshua C it’s cheaper to build a coyote, for the cyclone you have to get custom parts made because there are only two companies who have internals available and one sucks and the other is incredibly over priced. Like $2000-2500 for pistons and rings and $1500 for a set of rods... mind you that’s a set of 6. I had to have wiseco make me a custom set of pistons and it was still expensive.

Joshua C also my turbod cyclone was on e85 so the gas mileage wasn’t that great.

It’s just very different, you’d think oh it’s 2 less cylinders consumable and the build is overall way cheaper. But that’s pretty far from the truth. The coyote has a way bigger market and way more aftermarket support. The cyclone barely has any aftermarket support. It’s just tons and tons of custom stuff you need made to build one. I even needed to get a custom torque plate made because there wasn’t a single machine shop in Houston that carried one

People dont understand that the vast majority of mustangs sold are base model V6s(now inline 4s). That enables ford to produce and sell the V8s that they do. Which is a small number by comparison. The 4 and 6 cylinder cars keep the name afloat and allows the V8 to exist. Everyone loves the V8 but most only buy the V6 which is weird, but be grateful because it lets you have your V8. Same case for the camaro.
