I'm 62. I was raised on all this stuff. Why? I have 4 older siblings, and they inducted me without trying. I think this channel is awesome. Thanks for coming to work today!! ❤️☘️
Well, Kelly, you and I have much in common. 62 very soon, 4 older siblings, and I was definitely inducted without trying! It’s been a great life in music! There was just so much of it that we were too picky about it, but now I’m not so picky. I just love all of it!
I'm 56. I was raised on the good stuff, and it was eclectic. When I was a teen in the 1980s, I discovered metal. I was OBSESSED! I turned my younger brother onto Metallica. Several years later, I had two young sons who were exposed to Ozzy, Metallica, Queensryche, Megadeth, et al. To this day, my older son insists he "discovered" Megadeth on his own. My response was, "Yeah, sure. That's why I could never find my Megadeth CDs and had to replace one of them a couple times." It was worth it. I'm so glad they were born during a time when rock 'n' roll was still the real thing.
Hey Adam, Even though (as a HUGE Beatles and solo McCartney fan) I may be tired of hearing about the old “Paul is dead” hoax, I wouldn’t unsubscribe from your channel. Your show is great. Don’t let all the unsubscribers bring you down. It’s not like you dared to say something ridiculous like The Beatles are “bigger than Jesus,” or something. 😉 I bet that, just like The Beatles, losing a few knee-jerk reactionaries will prove to be a mere speed bump in your TH-cam channel popularity.
have you read the 'Memoirs of Billy Shears' book yet? Seeing as you're such a huge fan it may interest you. It's getting really expensive these days so i'm glad i got it years ago before it became so popular. You'll know how litigious Apple Music are concerning the Beatles and yet when searching or who actually owns the rights, this book is approved by Apple itself.
I'll agree with the Paul is dead as myth. First of all, if Paul was actually killed in a car accident. The news would have printed it, Paul's dad would have been very upset for the cover up of his death by using a look a like. I know that I would be upset for covering up my son's death. And, replacing him with a look a like. And, no one has shown the death certificate. Also, for Billy shears to replace Paul, he would've had to have been an amazing musician to be better than Paul. Paul McCartney is still alive contrary to popular belief. 😉😉😉😉

The Cass Elliott myth was the most intriguing to me. I LOVED Cass's voice, and was shocked to hear of her death. From the beginning, I had heard, and believed that she died of a drug overdose, so thank you for dispelling that misapprehension. I had always heard that the ham sandwich story was put out to rebut the truth of the overdose story.
I figured the lighter story was bs immediately (I'm old) I knew those Bic lighters weren't around in the late 60's. You either used matches or a Zippo.
I remember thinking of them as something new around the fall of 1972, but I wasn't sure that they had just come out then; there might have been some less successful disposable lighters on the market before that. I do remember disposable flashlights from around that time as well. Still, it seemed unlikely that Hendrix, Joplin and and Morison would all have been holding something that was not in wide use at the time. I remember that time well enough to know that refillable lighters were everywhere, as were book matches.
That was my first thought. I’m old enough to remember when disposable lighters came out and it was well after the passing of Janice Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.
The truth of the Bic lighter curse is that IF you are a musician AND carry a white Bic lighter AND your name starts with a “J” or a “K,” you will die at 27.
Please continue these. While I had not heard of all of them, the ones I had heard were just as you said. Like with Cass Eliot, when I heard the "story" of how it offended me I was glad the truth came out. People in public life attract all kinds of stories.
I loved Cass Elliot's voice. While my friends were partying & rockin out to Moody Blues, Jethro Toll, etc I was home singing along with my Mom's casette tape of Cass. It broke my heart that she died so young.
One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back." Carl Sagan The Demon-Haunted World
That is what is meant by the saying "repeat a lie enough times and it becomes the truth". Years ago every day for months the TV news kept reporting that tomatoes were making people sick and even killing some people. You could not get tomatoes from restaurants or anywhere else, then all of a sudden they said "Sorry, we were wrong, it is peppers, not tomatoes". They just said this one time so years later I heard someone say "remember when the tomatoes were killing people".
From what I remember hearing about Cass Elliot, she suffered from an eating disorder, often starving herself and possibly bulimia, trying to shed the weight that plagued her for most of her life.
Ozzy never urinated on the Alamo. He urinated on the Alamo Cenotaph Memorial, which is a memorial for all of the Tennesse volunteers who fought and died at the Alamo. It sits just a few hundred yards from the front of the Alamo and located on 300 Alamo Plaza.
@HitomiKitage The Alamo Cenotaph Memorial 'is' in San Antonio and a stone's throw away from the front door of the Alamo. Because of how close it is to the Alamo, it has been associated by the media that he urinated 'on' the Alamo itself.
I liked this episode; weird what gets suppressed. Also, with Blondie, yeah, that was Ted, there are a lot of law enforcement officers that believed he killed a lot more then 30, and across the USA. As for the Ham Sandwich, that was ridiculous; it's a well known fact - now - that women and men have different symptoms for heart attacks, women often have a heart attack and are 'walking dead' for up to a week (sad, I know), there is back pain (not debilitating, but between the shoulder blades, but not always), and/or a pain in the jaw that can spread to the neck (usually misinterpreted as a pull), coupled with fatigue, and tiredness, the back pain can actually go away -- women rarely have the arm pain, nor the crushing weight on the chest, and most women who have bad heart attacks, but don't realize it, sadly die later in their sleep -- she most likely had the heart attack before or during her concert, she could also have had a cluster of small attacks with the same symptoms. If you have women in your life, please go to any of the heart sites and download a quick guide and keep it in your medicine cabinet, or somewhere where you can see it to remind yourself, you could save a woman's life (yeah, you'll probably have to drive her to just get checked out).
Ted Bundy never took his light (tan not white) colored VW east of Colorado, and didn't have a missing passenger door handle. That's a myth. It was the passenger SEAT he sometimes removed, but not the handle. If you take the inside door handle of a VW bug off, the outside one doesn't stay there. They are attached together. No Bundy researcher of note takes her story seriously. It wasn't Ted. Not a jot of evidence that it was.
She passed out during the Johnny Carson show, and went to the hospital not too long before she died. She was on an extreme diet at the time and the thought is that played a major part in her death as well. It was probable that she was dehydrated at the time too.
My favorite rumor growing up was the Eddie Haskell from Leave it to Beaver was actually Alice Cooper when he was younger. Aaaahh the days before the internet. Great vid POR
Oh, that book was GREAT! I found it by accident. EASILY my favorite rock semiautobiography, and I'm including The Real Frank Zappa Book, my second favorite.
Growing up during the “Satanic Panic” we were always told that Alice Cooper had gotten his stage name from a Quija board session. Knowing he is now a very outspoken Christian, I find that story is likely apocryphal.
It's definitely untrue, because it was originally the name of his earlier BAND. He himself didn't go by the name until after they broke up in 1975, after which he legally changed his name to keep the recognition. The band has stated that the name Alice Cooper was meant to invoke something harmless and lovable like your sweet gramma' baking you cookies to contrast with their dark proggy hard glam rock sound.
There are SOOOO many rock myths, this needs to be a whole ass series. This channel is great and I appreciate all the little nuggets of info dropped in each episode. Thanks, Prof!❤
Cass was Jewish and would never have consumed ham or pork of any kind. Anyone with a wit of common sense would have known that and called "BUNK!". As for Debbie Harry thinking she met Bundy but the police debunk it . . . Well, it is possible since Bundy wasn't exactly travelling the country with a GPS locator, so nobody would know for sure where he'd been and exactly when. However, it is very possible that the guy Debbie thought was Bundy was actually another serial killer who was active during that time: Rodney (Dating Game killer) Acala. He did resemble Bundy a lot--same dark hair, chiseled features, chilling smile, and empty eyes. And . . . and it makes sense that it was Acala because he had gone on a killing spree in NYC during that time--brutally and horrifically murdering a young stewardess in her apartment (plus a few others they can't quite pin on him). I will bet money that it was him and not Bundy, who picked her up.
Bundy and Acala look way too much alike to be comfortable. I first saw a clip of Acala on the Dating Game and mistook him for Bundy. So yeah, it's easy to confuse the two.
I know many practicing Jews and they secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) partake in ham at times. Also, just because someone is Jewish (as in their ethnicity/culture/race) doesn't mean they are a practicing Jew from a religious standpoint.
That would be a lot of people's first thought. But being Jewish doesn't necessarily mean one wouldn't consume pork. No, it's NOT kosher. And Orthodox Jews wouldn't go near it. But not all Jews are Orthodox, and not all Jews, especially reform Jews, keep kosher. Source: My husband is a reform Jew, and he eats kosher food when he can, but he also loves ham and bacon. And there WAS a ham sandwich on Cass's nightstand. That's well known. She DIDN'T choke on it. But she did take it to her room, and didn't finish it.
@@mariebelladonna437 I regularly used to get bacon burgers for my jewish boss "Don't tell the wife". I also used to buy them for his wife "Don't tell the husband". Same for the daughter.
Given how amazing Debbie looked I could see just about any pervert being attracted to her. Cannot imagine how difficult it must have been for any young women back then. It was a different time.
The urban myth of the primal death scream in the Ohio Players "Love Rollercoaster" would be a good myth to cover. For those that don't know of it here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: "A primal scream is heard in the background fairly early in the song (between 1:24 and 1:28 on the single version, or between 2:32 and 2:36 on the album version). According to the most common legend, it was the voice of an individual being murdered live while the tape was rolling."
Fun fact: this myth was woven into a scene in the movie Urban Legend. There's a frat party scene where "Love Rollercoaster" is playing in the background and the scream is enhanced. However, instead of referring directly to the myth, they chose to explain it as someone mixed in the screams from a 911 tape of a girl being murdered. This ties into a following scene of Tara Reid's character being murdered at the campus radio station, as her screams end up being broadcast live through that same sound system, where the same guy who explained away the other screams reasons that she's doing a "performance art piece." I didn't know about the myth behind the song until I saw a behind-the-scenes piece about it years later. Wild!
I binge your stuff when I'm at work, and still haven't made it through all your videos while keeping up with your new uploads (your Weird Al interview was outstanding BTW). Your video about Paul was fascinating. I actually paused my work so I could listen more closely. No clue why anyone would unsubscribe over that, but I do know YT likes to randomly unsub people from channels they follow (happened to me with a couple channels that I had to resubscribe to). Keep doing what you do! It's great to have a channel like yours for us Gen-Xers who still have a healthy love of music.
Nothing beats reality, Professor! Also, NEVER SAY NEVER! Keep the reality coming! Always loved Cass Elliott's voice, so smooth and soulful. Never believed that stupid story about her. Also, I was in my late teens when living in Lake City, Florida when Bundy was killing girls, one a classmate of a girl I knew, one a lady in a neigjboring town that was never officially connected to him. We girls were terrified! Then I moved to Pensacola, where Bundy was finally caught for a broken tail light. Too weird!
I still don't have the slightest idea why anyone, and i mean literally anyone would be upset about the Paul is dead video. Can anyone shed some light on this so that it makes sense?
Yeah. That's the problem. They're snowflakes, emotionally unable to tolerate contrary opinions, largely because they are too ignorant to explain their positions. They get their talking points from teachers and "influencers", and those influencers don't know any more than they do. NONE of these people know any of the backgrounds of the the opinions that they think they hold. I say "I think" because I don't really consider a completely ignorant opinion to actually be an opinion. Just parroting. On the other hand, perhaps you touched a nerve in me, hahahaha.
Well done, sir. As someone who was heavily immersed in the rock world starting in the late 60s, these all bring back memories of the legends that circulated. A thought about people attacking you over the "Paul is Dead" video {which I have yet to see} - that was nearly 6 decades ago, and if people are still having that intense of an over-reaction to it, maybe they need to do a serious re-assessment of their priorities.

Thanks as always, Adam! Your show's are always excellent. They're interesting, well researched, and entertaining! I'm 63, and love music, especially of the rock era. Have you ever had an episode that focused on Thin Lizzy? I was in high school when they were hitting it big. I was sure I had found the ultimate band. And I believe I did. So sad that Phil couldn't have remained healthy. Anywho, thanks for all you do! Love you Professor! 💖
I couldn't help but notice you showed a picture of Manson next to the Monkees, but you didn't mention THAT myth! I'd love to hear you cover that one--the one where Manson supposedly auditioned for the Monkees TV show! That one blew my mind as a kid...and blew it again when, as an adult, I discovered it was actually a myth started by the Monkees themselves! 🤯🤣
That Paul is dead myth is ridiculous, I've been in a few arguments about it online. Left handed, one in a billion talent, Liverpool character and accent, wider in the hips than most men, Johns continuous jokes on the public etc Anyone thinking Paul is dead simply wants to believe that.
I can't believe subs would leave over this GREAT video, Professor! I LOVE all your stories and never miss one, and this one is one of my favorites! The Dennis Wilson/Charlie Manson story has been explained in several of Manson's rants. When Dennis Wilson drowned, Manson said, "Dennis Wilson was killed by my shadow because he took my music and changed the words from my soul." The Mama Cass story always made me feel so bad for her. She fought her weight all her life, and it's terrible that the story of the ham sandwich was so disrespectful to her memory. There was an awful joke that said if Karen Carpenter would have eaten the ham sandwich that Cass choked on, we'd still have two great singers. People are cruel. I kinda doubt Debbie Harry's story about Bundy. Virtually all the women he killed had long, brown hair parted in the middle. One woman who escaped Bundy was wearing a stocking cap when he picked her up. She took off the cap after she got in the car, and he was furious. He screamed at her, "Why did you cut your hair? You've ruined everything!", stopped the car and threw her out. That is not to say that it's totally impossible, of course. He might have been unable to resist picking her up with no witnesses. Sorry for the rant - lol. PLEASE continue the urban myths series! It's so crazy to remember some of them, and I had never heard the Debbie Harry story! If a subscriber doesn't want to watch it, skip it!! That's why the delete button is there.
❤🎉 Mama Cass did not deserve that horrible story about her. 😢 And Ozzy? He should have had the bat given a rabies shot! 😂 Thanks Professor. Have a great weekend! (Loved Laugh-In and great shirt).
It was choking on eating peanut butter by the spoonful by the time I heard it in about '83 🫤 and I believed it for years! poor woman didn't deserve that kind of legacy after everything she accomplished
People get upset over these stories?! I love hearing them. Love finding out what's fact and what's fiction and where fact meets fiction. As far as I'm concerned, let them complain. I think it's another great video, Professor!
You lost subscribers over tbat? Really? Wow...thats really sad. Hey, I just wanted to say love the channel. I've been recovering from hernia surgery. Combing through your old videos has really helped pass the time..thanks...❤👍✌️
Keep on telling it like it is bro. I love your depth of detail as well as your obviously sincere emotion. The fact you appreciate Rush and Yes helps a lot lol. Rock on.
I remember hearing about Ozzy's next tour. The tour jackets had "Remember The Alamo" written inside the pocket flap. I can't attest to the veracity of the story. 🤠
I'm a professional researcher/scientist in my field. So many people just can't handle the truth, especially when science proves that what we believed for so long turns out to be untrue; same with "historical" beliefs. Rock on, Prof...there is nobody better qualified at music history here on social media than YOU! 🤗🇲🇽
I have been fascinated with PID for years, its a deep subject, and can be creepy as well. Its also very divisive, no reason to take it personal and call people names.
I, for one, thought your piece on the "Paul is Dead" legend was great! I remember these stories well. Anyone who takes issue with you for the episode doesn't deserve your time! This was another great episode, and myths I remember well. Keep doing what you're doing Adam, and I'll remain a fan!
I remember hearing these things about the rock legends especially Dennis Wilson getting mixed up with Charles Manson and regretting it especially with what would happen with Manson later and i liked hearing all of these real or not thanks for more memories Professor. 🎶🎤🎸🎸🎹🥁🎶
These stories and legends are all a part of music history. And history isn't always pretty and glamorous. Its good to hear all sides of the musical story, for the sake of an accurate perspective of music and the musicians. Would I like to see more of this? Absolutely. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, brother. I wrote it before, I'll write it again- but with a twist: You will have some Garden Party moments, P.O.R. (Ricky Nelson- "You can't please everyone...") Nothing you can do about it. Keep putting out there what you choose to. People don't have to watch each episode if it's not there 'cup of tea'. 😊❤
24:12 looking at this photo here I noticed the three keyboard players of the Grateful Dead, who all died under tragic circumstances, leading to the legend of the cursed keyboard position of the Grateful Dead. Was there ever an episode on this channel that mentioned that? But one thing about it is that the final keyboardist Vince Welnickactually died under crazy tragic circumstances as well. He slit his own throat in front of his wife during a fight. He had suffered with crippling depression and emotional problems for years that culminated in this unfortunate situation. So his picture should’ve been included with those. Really sad.
Professor Reader, your content and delivery are superb! Modern music appreciation has been my hobby since I was 7 years old, listening to a transistor radio under my pillow in bed at night. I am now an old rocker, soon to be 69. I ran away from home to attend Woodstock , have been a roadie and booking agent for local bands, have attended over 200 concerts, attended Cal Jam II, saw The Talking Heads just playing outdoors on Bruin walk at UCLA one afternoon, saw Michael Franks for free one afternoon at Royce Hall at UCLA, and many other serendipitous experiences with music and musicians. I have always been into music trivia and would make up topical quizzes to spring on my friends! I love knowing about the artists' intended messages in their songs and about the rock 'n roll lifestyles in which they engaged. I would like to know if you have ever tackled reviewing originals and their remakes? I am newly subscribed, but have enjoyed many of your "lectures!" Class is in session with The Professor of Rock!!!
I've heard all these especially the Beach Boys/Manson of course. The Cass one makes me sad really. Her weight troubles and crash diets probably did her in but to have people think you were so in need of food it killed you.
That yo-yo dieting is the worst. It puts stress on the heart . I believe she was also using diet pills which were basically amphetamines . I’m sure I there were several factors to cause her to die so young
I'm glad you did this one. I get pissed off every time I hear make Mama Cass ham sandwich jokes. Idiots. She was a talented generous hearted woman who suffered a lot of disrespect solely over her weight issues. But people don't realize how much of an impact she had upon early rock history by hosting some of California's greatest legends at her house in Laurel Canyon. I too am dumbfounded by her manager's idiotic decision to start that ham sandwich rumour. She deserved a lot better.
Adam, I learned a LONG time ago that people DO NOT LIKE BEING TOLD THEYRE WRONG… not about religion, not about politics and not about THEIR MUSIC! Now, why would all those people who UNsubscribed because of the “Paul is dead” video, I wouldn’t know WHY… we’ve all seen Paul McCartney ALIVE and playing in his live performances… I admit that I gave you some crap about the story, but that was because (Trumpy) Dumpty and his antics have made it INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT to TRUST even watching the news… But weirdly, I enjoy listening to you telling us about the old Music Myths…
If I'm wrong, I like being informed of it, to enlighten myself and others and to set the record straight. I'm rare, as I have no ego, and I hate that writing this may make it sound like I do. I'm no Trumpy fan, either.
My favorite story is Charles Manson confronting David Bowie around 1971 in a small LA club screaming Bowie's lyrics at his face and Bowie was all freaked out
@@ProfessorofRock but i don't get the issue? Are they upset that that was "a thing"? i mean what was objectionable about it? The rumor/hoax or whatever you want to call it with all the clues etc happened...
I appreciated your coverage of the Beatles and Paul. It was huge when I was growing up. We all listened to the records and studied the album art looking for clues to whether Paul was an imposter or not. I'm not sure how the rumors spread back then with no internet, but it was pretty much exactly how you explained it in your video. Why anyone would be upset about revisiting those times is beyond me. It was a great memory and fun times.
This was great! What a fun feature for this channel! I'd certainly like to see more if you have it! Surely there's no shortage of myths & legends out there in the rock & roll world, but if anyone is to cover them, I vote for the Professor! As for the loss of subs and whatnot, I would not put it past YT for being behind it. So many people have been unsubbed from channels without their knowledge, and channels' stats are always getting messed with somehow.
I ❤❤❤❤your channel!!! Gen X-er here with a lifelong passion for music 🎶 Haters be damned! Facts are facts and you always seem to attempt to lay out what the facts are straight up but also bring the context, the humanity, to the fore and for that I truly appreciate you 🌹

People actually unsubscribed because of the Paul is dead video?!?! What kind of over sensitive person does that?!?! Honestly, my mind is reeling from this.

Even though (as a HUGE Beatles and solo McCartney fan) I may be tired of hearing about the old “Paul is dead” hoax, I wouldn’t unsubscribe from your channel. Your show is great. Don’t let all the unsubscribers bring you down. It’s not like you dared to say something ridiculous like The Beatles are “bigger than Jesus,” or something. 😉
I bet that, just like The Beatles, losing a few knee-jerk reactionaries will prove to be a mere speed bump in your TH-cam channel popularity.
have you read the 'Memoirs of Billy Shears' book yet?
Paul, yes, but Keith Richards? That’s definitely clone no 7 by now.

Keith getting his blood replaced was always a big one. My fav is Robert Johnson going to the Crossroads 👻
I heard one a few years ago about Keith Richards snorting his father's ashes, not long after the one about him falling out of a coconut tree.

I have heard many reasons people died.
Basically for that reason to cover up Drug overdoses.
Definitely do a part two. Fascinating.
Never heard the one about Debbie. Glad you can help put some truth to the myths
At least she wasn't roofied.

Yeah, weeding the garden. :)
What was there problem?
Always loved those huge, heavy ornate lighters placed on coffee tables and desks as part of the decor.
That was my first thought. I’m old enough to remember when disposable lighters came out and it was well after the passing of Janice Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.
I remember fire marshals wouldnt let us light candles, but we sure could spark up smoking paraphernalia.
I thought that you handled the Paul is Dead myth quite well. I'm sad that some people can't keep level heads about such things.

No Jewish person has every consumed the product of a pig? That's your thesis???

I remember that one!
I was always told that the scram was from someone dying on the roller coaster ride
Wild!
Wow I remember that one big time
I’ve heard so many stories about that!

When Dennis Wilson drowned, Manson said, "Dennis Wilson was killed by my shadow because he took my music and changed the words from my soul."
The Mama Cass story always made me feel so bad for her.

Another member of the 27 club, often forgotten, as in this video.

I enjoyed this. Yeah, how about a part 2.👍🏻👍🏻
Great stories as always. Anyone who unsubscibed because if your Beatles story is their loss. You rock!!!!
I ❤❤❤❤your channel!!! Gen X-er here with a lifelong passion for music 🎶 Haters be damned! Facts are facts and you always seem to attempt to lay out what the facts are straight up but also bring the context, the humanity, to the fore and for that I truly appreciate you 🌹
Me too. (A boomer).
I never heard the Debbie Harry Bundy tale before, wow.
People actually unsubscribed because of the Paul is dead video?!?! What kind of over sensitive person does that?!?! Honestly, my mind is reeling from this.
I still don’t understand what they are opposed to. Do people actually believe the myth or is there something I didn’t catch?
Another urban legend that I heard in Mexico, my ex-wife heard in Virginia and others have mentioned: the session player getting stabbed during the taping of "Love Rollercoaster."
I remember that one!
The white BIC lighter had Janis Joplin's name spelled incorrectly!
I noticed that too, because my Mom is also named Janis, and *everyone* spells her name wrong!
