5:15 quick side note: RNA is not "inherently" less stable than DNA. That's a very wide spread misconception that you hear in basically every video about this topic. It's true that RNA is far less stable in basic conditions (due to the 2'-OH group), that it degrades quickly if divalent (heavy) metal ions are present, and that RNases (enzymes that break down RNA) are basically omnipresent; RNA as a chemical molecule on the other hand is just as perfectly stable as DNA, as long as those three conditions (pH, metals, and RNases) are cared for. You can leave an acidic solution of metal-free and RNase-free RNA on a bench at ambient temperatures for years without any noticable degradation. Biology has simply evolved to quickly be able to degrade RNA, it's not an inherent property of the molecule.

Thanks for the info, I've always asked myself why the cell stores DNA and not RNA since that would remove the necessity to always transcript the DNA, but thanks to the video and this comment I now learned more about that.

    • @ARIZJOE

Well, maybe it was dormant HPV. HPV is spread through bodily fluids, most times in a sex act. But as far as I know there is more than one etiology of anal cancer. Also, women are much more vulnerable to HPV because it loves the cells of the cervix.

So a year on, I'd love to see a vid like this just on vaccines. There are many different kinds, and many of those kinds have been applied to SARS-COV-2. (and a lot of miss-information that mixes them up). I realize it'd be a lot of work, but it would be awesome to have something this well structured to try and help people figure out which vaccine does what. (For example, I spend a lot of time explaining how 'mRNA' doesn't mean it's modifying genes, or why the second shot is different from the first for, say, the J&J vaccine (if you get two), but not for the Pfizer or Moderna which require two, etc ).

A difficult subject is still difficult when compressed into a 10 minute video. This is video is basically all you'd learn in college biology classes.
The broad strokes would be the same. You would still be you.
Your immune system would be different, due to the fact it didn't have to evolve to combat viruses.
Your DNA would be different, because some of your DNA originally came from viruses---this DNA is generally inactive and harmless.
Bacteria, however, would have their lives turned upside down. Most viruses infect bacteria. I couldn't find any good numbers on just how many, because genetics is a relatively new field and we haven't had much reason to study viruses that don't directly affect us.
For instance, there are up to 10 million viruses in a drop of sea water. But these viruses are unable to infect you.
Bacteria contain a TON of unique and innovative ways to fight off these viruses. The most famous is undoubtedly CRISPR, which can identify and cut specific pieces of DNA---bacteria used CRISPR to locate and cut up viral DNA, we use CRISPR to make very precise genetic alterations by cutting the DNA and stitching it back together.

there are competing classification systems for viruses. you focus on the 'baltimore' classification system, which attempts to classify viruses according to some technical aspects of their replication mechanism. this system is probably of some use if you're trying to develop a vaccine or use a virus to for some pharmacological purpose like fighting cancer
at 3:30, you note that the new deadly wuhan coronavirus is a type IV in the baltimore classification system, and the old non-deadly flu coronavirus is type V
so, you say, it's 'not the flu', because the two viruses are not related, (although they are both single-strand RNA types)
then, at around 7:00, you talk about virus range. this has to do with what kinds of life forms can serve as hosts for a virus
plant viruses don't infect animals, you say. and most animal viruses can't infect humans
the statement is correct or very nearly correct. but why is that? why would it be impossible or at least very rare for a plant virus to infect a human?
if you look at the types of viruses listed under types IV and V of the baltimore classification, you'll see plant and animal viruses listed under each type
so these viruses are somehow related in their replication mechanisms, but the features that allow them to use plant or animal hosts are apparently unrelated
so you have a classification system where things in the same group are related in some technical respect, but unrelated in another respect that determines whether and how they affect human beings
then you say that viruses in another group in this system are unrelated because they are in another group, even though viruses within the group are unrelated in how they can or can't function in the human body
it doesn't really work. if things in the same classification are dissimilar, you can't say something in another class is dissimilar because it's in another class
they might be dissimilar, and if you know they are dissimilar you should be able to say why
classified in an adjacent group in the baltimore classification system can't be a reason why
things are classified in different groups because they are different in some particular respects. they are not generally different because they are in different groups
clinically SARS-CoV-2 and H1N1 cause a similar range of conditions from asymptomatic to fever and severe pulmonary distress. symptoms are often similar, as is treatment, contagiousness, age and health profile of patients most severely affected, apparent limited immunity post-infection, case mortality rate, and how you get infected
there might be clinical differences but often not enough to allow experienced doctors to distinguish illnesses caused by SARS-CoV-2 and H1N1 without an antibody or nucleic acid test. which is why i call illnesses caused by these viruses the flu
because, clinically, they are the flu regardless of whether the RNA-strand is positive- or negative-sense, or whether it comes from bats, birds, or eating raw walrus
the only reason it's being called 'not-the-flu' is to prepare your brain to accept the propaganda that going crazy about it is not going crazy because even though no one ever went crazy about the flu, this is 'not the flu' so it's ok, even necessary, to go crazy about it
it might also be worth mentioning that the average age of death from the new deadly wuhan coronavirus is pretty close to life expectancy
so no, there are no 'before times'. nothing has changed except for people going mental about this thing instead of whatever it was people were going mental about before
    because mental lives matter

It'd be rather inaccurate. economics is a lot more subjective.

I'm pretty sure that viruses are coded in assembly. They are so efficient. Except that Ebola monster, that must be python.

Metagenetics. We can sequence stuff from environmental samples even if we can't grow them in cell culture. We know from the genome how similar or dissimilar the virus is from others we have seen.

The Seraphim and Cherubim are the oldest, meaning the most evolved of all Life. Nearly perfect. All Life can feel Pain. All Life can feel Joy. All Life can feel Fear. All Life can feel True Love. These are the fundamental motivators of all Life. And the more evolved the Life the more perfectly the feel them.
Humans are the least evolved. The most
Complicated and complex of the Life of this world, meaning the most prone to errors. The most prone to mistakes.
The most complicated and complex of all three parts all Life in this reality use. Mentally, emotionally, physically complex and complicated so prone to errors in thinking, feeling and doing.
Without the rest of Life humans would have nothing not even their lives. Without humans the rest of life would hands down benefit. No life needs humans.
Think about that the next time you think to war against or use indiscriminately another Life. Humans don’t even know what Life is, and they certainly do not assign meaning, value and purpose to it. A bad assumption which corrupts all their beliefs they have just acted as if are truth in a game of opposition they just call competition. Humans words and beliefs do not dictate the mature of this reality.
And there is only one Law, and it acts without any sentience or will because it is perfect. Call it anything you want but be mindful any name or bearded form you put on it doesn’t change the reality of what it is. Perfect means perfect. Flawless in its judgements. Without malice or mercy. It governs all things, and so it needs no form or face especially of a mean upgrade of Santa.
Nature’s Law, Karma, Kismet, Destiny, Fate. Humans have called the Law many things but human names do not create reality. They are not perfect. Truly they are the most imperfect of all the Life in both form and nature as their utter dependancy on the rest of the older more evolved life shows.
Treat all Life as you would be treated. For that is the Law. Balance. And the Balance always corrects itself. Take and something will be taken. Give and something will be given. And the petty, vain, needs and superficial loves of sick children do not matter in the least. All Life can feel Fear. All Life can feel Pain. All Life except the most evolved, the eldest must take from Life to survive. But they do it in a billion amazing ways which inflict the least amount of pain and fear. And no suffering. Only one animal takes more from life than it can use or needs. Only one animal kills for pleasure and sport. Only one animal is cruel and enjoys another Life pain or worse tells itself that it doesn’t matter. Only one animal is indifferent to another Life because it told itself it was worth more than even others of its own species. Only one animal wars and is in opposition it just calls competition. Only one animal forces its own offspring to pay for the knowledge it claims to have. And none of these things are things evolved or superior or civilised. They are unnatural behaviour of a very sick animal.
And nature is patient with her children but when that Momma warns you that she has had it up to hear and you don’t listen you won’t get another warning. Nature deals with sickness swiftly and that war is one no Life can win.
The Law is perfect. We are not. But at least the rest of Life knows this. Too bad humans just copied their answers from the biggest bearded bullies. Even the females which only shows how sick they are. Mercy to the sick things which just call themselves human beings. But they have no humanity because it has no value in their sick game of imagined values they have all played against Life because the males wanted to be in charge.
