I love the augmented records. I have found so many siblings records because I have typed in Mom's or Dad's name and because that name is on the record I now have found the sibling, or Mom's maiden name, or alternate spellings of any of the names. It has been a great help in helping to fill in the branches of my tree.

Excellent tips and explanations of how indexing is done, and the issues/problems which may be involved. This is a good video to view before doing a lot of searches on the huge Ancestry databases.

Great tips in this video!! It's because of the index I was able to knock down a brick wall in my tree. I know you mentioned it in the video above that we have the ability to order a copy of our ancestor's Social Security Applications and Claims document (I believe it's at the 6:07 timestamp)... So two quick questions- if the individual was an immigrant and not naturalized, were they still allowed to apply for social security? And how do you go about ordering your ancestor's Social Security Application? Thank you!!!

If you locate a person in the Social Security Death Index on Ancestry, there is an "Order" button on the record page that gives full instructions about how to get a copy of the original application. If a non-citizen was a legal permanent resident who earned a certain amount of money each year, they could qualify for Social Security benefits and would, thus, have a social security number. Crista, why does my public library only have access to 10327 data-bases? Is a private membership going to give me more data-bases to search?
    Thanks

Without knowing details about the type of institutional subscription your library has purchased, it would be hard to say. Is it possible they only have access to U.S. records and not the international collections? (Crista)

I am starting to see the all names in index flowing down into some census records now too. although the concept is nice it does mean you have multiple hints to ignore. Example 1930 Census hint for a female i am also getting a hint for the husband under her.

I found an England and Wales Marriage index for my great grandparents, it tells me her name and a volume and page number the info is on, how do I get to that page in the book she is in

You would need to order a copy of the original register records from the General Register Office by providing them with the index information. Details about how to do that can be found here: www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Because you showed 1870 as example, quick question. In South at least, this census seems to give me the most grief. Find in 1860 and 1880 so know wasn't killed in war, but can't find in 1870. Any reason for this? War related?

Usually when I have this problem it is because the surname was mis-spelled or transcribed incorrectly for the index. So I try to search for creative mis-spellings, but usually I end up going to the specific town/county and reviewing page by page

Aw, that is why so many directories look like they were indexed by someone mashing the keyboard.
