Thank you for your presentation of these videos, Crista, they are very easy to follow and you have a lovely easy listening voice. I love to play these videos on my phone while cooking dinner each evening.

This is a MUST WATCH and the best advise over all for people starting their research. The cautions are also really important. Thank you Crista

Searching for a parent, I start with subtracting 30 years for father and 25 years for mother from child's birth date with a plus/minus of 5 years. This works quite well, and if not found, then I extend out from there

I often use the 1900 and 1910 census listing of the number of children that the mother had and how many are still living to estimate death dates. If I know all of the children that she has and is agreed with the census and now it lists one, for example, as deceased, I can use that to start to narrow down a death date for the child.

Hi, video (at ~20:40) suggests I can record a date range, i.e. between two dates. How do I do that, what's the syntax, so that Ancestry understands it's a range?

I find many use abbreviations for about and between for dates, but I stay away from using those words in a date field. I was not sure if you those abbreviations would affect the searches.

Sometimes an abt or btw date is all you can enter if no specific date is available. And, no, it does not negatively affect searches.

Does Ancestry have a schedule of when they are going to release new records? New Jersey makes it difficult to find out when people die

You can keep up with new record releases by visiting the Ancestry Card Catalog (ancstry.me/CardCat) and sorting by DATE ADDED.

Ancestry but is there any sort of list or calendar saying when records WILL be released?

I do that too. I heard you did that in a vid a few years ago and I started doing that. If I have a child, I subtract 25 years and make that a birth for the parents(I will usually make the father a little older). I make the marriage date a few years before the child's birth date. Always using the abbreviation ABT or BEF so that I know...I'm only guessing.

Good morning ☀️, I have a question.... I not to along ago have done DNA tests just waiting for the results. My problem is I had 3 different names ... my birth name... Which I found out only a little over 15 years ago... 2 ... the name I always knew myself by ..and than 3 my married name. So I'm not sure 🤔 what name to start on my family tree ? ....if you can help that would be great 👍🏽. Thank you in advance

Women are always recorded in a family tree using their maiden name. Since you are still living, no one will see what name you choose to use. But, if you are considering what to name your family tree and since you are creating a family tree to connect to your DNA results, you might consider using some combination of your birth name and your maiden name.
