    Thanks to the introduction of the Oculus (aka Meta) Quest 2, Virtual Reality has gained a lot of popularity over the past couple of years and has begun to make it's way into the main stream. While the Quest 2's stand alone capabilities are impressive the BEST VR experiences are still only to be had on PC. But gaming in virtual reality on PC requires some pretty high end hardware to get the best experience and I wanted to find out if the Zotac RTX 3060ti Twin Edge OC has what it takes. There's about a bazillion RTX 3060ti reviews on TH-cam but very few of them talk about it's performance in PC VR games. If you own a Quest 2 and are wanting to get into PC VR and looking at purchasing a 3060ti for VR, in this video I take a look at 9 different VR titles (namely Contractors, The Walking Dead Saints & Sinners, Beat Saber, Red Matter 2, Assetto Corsa, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, Bone Lab, Lone Echo 2 and Half Life Alyx) to see just how well the 3060ti performs in VR and whether or not it's the right choice for you. Enjoy. :)

    Hi. Thanks for the detailed video. Need some advice please. Play a lot of the time on a VR headset (Quest mk 1) with the computer AMD Ryzen 7 2700x, 64gb 3200Mhz Ram and a AMD RX 580 8gb graphics card doing all of the work before sending it through wifi to the headset via Virtual Desktop. Would a 16gb upgrade graphics card make a marked increased in the graphics of such games as IL2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad to the headset or would there be a negligable difference? Thanks in advance.

    It also maters what headset u have if u have a more high end headset what has more pixel per eye will make you lag more but something like a valve index (1440 by 1440 on a nice 90hz) would run way better just matters what setting you put on your headset on steam vr and on the game

    Surprisingly you're using the same card I just ordered today and should have arrive in a few days. I've been using a PNY 770 4gb OC card since 2013, and it's been a surprisingly long lived card. While I would prefer replacing it with another 70 class card; this is what I can afford, and for the games a play use my PC for - I'm hopeful I'll get something close to that lifespan with the 3060ti.

    You'd give us so much more information if you did MSI Afterburner tests too. For example, the VRAM usage is very important, but I can only wonder what's going on there.
    Also, you would indirectly benchmark RAM and other stuff too.

    I’m looking to buy a new gpu and I’m between these, but tbh I’m not sure about the stability of the 6700xt, because currently I own a rx590 and it’s a nightmare at the point I have a more stable experience with my gtx 1050 laptop

    I've been trying to solve this mystery for two years now. Like me, you are getting "Application Dropped Frames" count going up even while there is plenty of performance headroom. Shouldn't there be no dropped frames in this case? Yes, dropped frames makes sense when your performance headroom dips or spikes below zero, but WHY are there dropped frames no matter how much performance headroom???

  • @StormDawntion
    @StormDawntion ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Interesting, I was running across the same questions in recently in regards to my 3070 (and questioning whether I really should have bought one when AMD equivalents like the 6700xt or 6800 around the same price point have more VRAM as well). Like for me, I was playing the new Call of Duty Modern Warefare II and saw that it was using like around 7GB of VRAM (saw it max out around 7.8GB at times) and on 1080p as well.
    Still found it interesting that NVIDIA decided to put 12GB on a 3060 though but then with a higher ranked card, especially like the 3070 and its TI variant, it has less VRAM which I feel should be less of a worry when you are buying something more highly rated/ranked (like even the 3050 has an 8GB variant lol)

    • @Extreme96PL
      @Extreme96PL ปีที่แล้ว

      Call of Duty is not good to test that if you watch for example 4090 test in CoD you can notice it also use almost full of 4090 VRAM CoD allocate almost whole VRAM of GPU but never use that amount.

    • @francois-xavierberard7266
      @francois-xavierberard7266 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason the 3060ti has 12gb is because it’s running on 192bits lane and need 12gb to compete with other gpu such as the Rtx 3070ti that has 8gb on 256bits lane and is therefor better.

    Would love to see VR performance with the Intel Arc A770 at some point - right now for me, its around $200 cheaper than the 3060ti in my country. Wonder how the performance would compare?

    • @Maraksot78
      @Maraksot78  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd really like to try out an A770 but right now in the US it's impossible to buy one at normal price. The only ones I can ever find for sale are on eBay for around $450. Sadly that's around the same price I can buy a 6700XT or 3060ti for right now and in normal "flat screen" gaming benchmarks the A770 is no where near as good as either of those GPU's so I just can't bring myself to pay that much for one.

    12gb is really the new 8gb, especially when you try something like VRC, it's nice to have the extra VRAM, but 8 is playable, especially if you lower settings, also, for those of you on quest, I HIGHLY recommend buying virtual desktop and setting it up properly, plenty of vids out there, and that way you're only rendering through one VR runtime, if you're playing games through steam, performance headroom is vastly superior on steamvr

    As an owner of the 3060ti for a few years -- it's very solid for VR. The only caveat I'd say is if you're specifically looking to run a super high fidelity version of Skyrim VR. Sounds hilarious but an ultra-modded Skyrim is honestly one of the toughest games I run to get consistent performance -- but that stems from the fact it was never really designed for that intent and it has some bad old threading nonsense in the game engine. Still, if you're looking for the best performing Skyrim VR thing in the world, I'd opt for the tip top of the line if that's your ultimate desire. Otherwise, 3060ti will serve you very well. (You can still do less intense versions of Skyrim as well -- I do and it's still lots of fun).

The flight sims I have done have been fine. If you do end up buying one, I'd also super recommend making sure you research what your HMD (headset) has in terms of optimizing its link to your PC. Despite what you may think. the RTX 3060 is worse in the VRAM due to it being a slower 192-Bit bus, yet the rtx 3060ti shares the 256-bit bus on the 3070, However that was just to clear up rumors and that card will still be perfectly fine for VR!

      I'd go with a 6700XT for the additional VRAM. The 3060ti only has 8GB and the 6700XT has 12GB. However, if you're using a Quest 2, Nvidia GPU's typically have less issues you have to deal with. Although, most of the problems I've had lately are with Radeon 7000 gpu's. Radeon 6000 has been fine for the most part.

    Why is anti-aliasing always always set to low in your test?

    • @Maraksot78
      @Maraksot78  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a couple different reasons for turning anti-aliasing down or even off for VR. The purpose of AA is to reduce "jaggies" at lower resolutions to make the image appear smoother and less blocky or jagged. While this is great for flat games at 720p or 1080p and stuff, the reality is the more you increase the resolution the less anti-aliasing is needed because to your eyes the images already appear smoother because the pixels are so much smaller. I try to run VR at 4704 X 2384 if possible in my tests, which is actually higher resolution than 4K (3840 X 2160). When running games at that high of resolution with the pixel density being as good as it is on modern headsets (the Quest 2's native resolution is 3664 X 1920) I feel you don't need AA as much. In fact in many games the higher you turn it up the blurrier the visuals become, making it look worse in my opinion. So I like to turn it down to keep the graphics looking as sharp and crisp as possible. Also depending on the type of AA turning it up higher has a greater impact on performance, so in my opinion I'd rather turn it down to get sharper looking graphics and get a better framerate.

    just saving money for 3060ti, only thing i dont understand why would you set the render resolution so high, when you got only 72 fps.. i think 80 fps is minimum that feels normal, and when i switch to this card, i will gladly lower the resolution to get 90 fps..

    • @Maraksot78
      @Maraksot78  ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the graphics to be as sharp and clear as possible. I'm ok with 72Hz if that's what I have to do to get the graphics as sharp and clear as possible. I find when the graphics are pixelated and blurry it kinda gives me a headache which is not fun. Personally I have an RTX 3080ti and play at 4704 x 2384 90Hz all the time since it's capable of it.
      Also there are people out there with headsets that run at a higher resolution than the Quest 2, (i.e. HP Reverb G2) so I crank it up to help give them an idea of what a GPU can do in their headset.

So i went back to virtual desktop, that runs much better, but im still playing most games in 1.0 zero res, (for example alyx at fidelity 4 thru console command, thats something like 1,1), virt desktop res at medium, 80 hz, msaa 2x (default is 4x), in game settings all at medium/low. any higher settings would mean a ton of stuttering when moving. Lone echo 2 all on low except textures medium, bloom and fog on, res 1.0, autoresolution on, msaa off, that blurry antialias on, 72 fps, and i get a ton of stuttering when i move around.

      To be fair running it in "flat screen" mode on a monitor is less demanding then running it in VR although to max out the settings on a monitor you still need a good amount of horsepower because there's just so much stuff that needs to be rendered. For VR you're GPU is essentially rendering the game twice, once for each eye. This is how the sense of depth is created for virtual reality. Since your GPU is basically having to do twice the work in the same amount of time performance is obviously going to be effected.

    Why do you test so ridiculously high above your headset's actual resolution? Quest 2 doesn't need over 1920 x 1832 per eye, it doesn't really give a realistic indication of how well it would run if you weren't going overkill. I have a rift s with only 1440p per eye resolution and it's completely fine.

    • @Maraksot78
      @Maraksot78  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First of all thanks for checking out the video and for the question. I test at higher than native resolution for several reasons. First, I just like how sharp the graphics look when you set the render resolution that high.
      This is tied to my next reason, which is something called Super Sampling. When an image is rendered at a higher resolution and then sent to a display where the resolution is lower the image actually looks sharper/better than had the image been rendered at the native resolution of the display because the data sent to each pixel on the display is an average of the multiple pixels it's being sampled from. i.e. Super Sampling. This is something you can see very easily when watching movies and stuff on a 1080p TV. Blu-rays are 1080p but most movies have either been shot at 4K or 8K so even though the resolution of the blu-ray movie and your TV is only 1080p it looks sharper and clearer than content that was shot at 1080p.
      The last reason I test at higher than native Quest 2 resolution is because there are headsets out there that have higher resolution displays than the Quest 2. For example the HP Reverb G2 has a resolution of 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye (4320 x 2160 total) where as the Quest 2 is 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye (3664 x 1920 total). And going forward the displays in new headsets are only going to get better and most likely pack higher resolution displays so I figure it's good for people to see just how high you can go.

    Very high latency in a lot of those games. Anything over 40ms will be noticeable with controllers. Much higher and you start to notice it in head movement, ouside of turning where ASW helps. A headset with display port wouldn't go far over 20ms.
