Great intro, I never relized the PCT starts out that freaken beautiful. Rewards go to those who are bold.... Really would you ever imagine sitting at that desk 10 odd years ago that you would be in the California Southern Border experience the PCT, wrestling Rattle Snakes soaking in those magical views. Awesome stuff.
Just started watching. I did the PCT in 2021-2023. Older guy so trail injuries took their toll. Anyway, I plan to watch you through to the end. Saw something interesting in this video at about 18:10. I have an Altaplex and have set it up by staking the four corners before setting the pole. I think this is zPacks instructions. Anyway, your method of the back two followed by the pole seems to give a tighter set. I'll try that on a hike I have planned in Southern IL in October. Best wishes for a successful hike!

So exciting to see the beginning of the trail! I love that you're noting the different plants and animals than you're used to out East, and sharing them with us - it's reminding me of how I felt when I first moved West. And that snake in the first five miles - glad you were ready!
I walked the Washington portion several times in the 60s and 70s. Just happy to have found your videos to see the rest of the trail. Now retired in Thailand 😅

I'm very happy for you and that your first couple days on the PCT went well. That's a tough climb up to Mt Laguna. Please don't throw rocks at the snakes like you did. I've seen snakes maimed and killed from people doing that. If anything, just stomp and scrape the ground to get their attention. I'm looking forward to following your hike!
That was my thought as well, especially the second rock. Some pebbles or a small stick are more than enough if stopping and scraping aren't doing the trick. One wrong bounce and rocks that size could easily kill the snake, which I know wasn't Frozen's intention!
Very much this. No wonder it was pissed. There’s no reason to harass wildlife. We’re lucky to visit their home, but it’s their home first. Canada will still be there after the snake moves on.

Frozen, you are one of the reasons I started hiking and backpacking in the first place. I cannot wait to see more of the pCT and journey on it. Last fall, I was in San Diego and did a small section from the terminus and it is quite amazing, not like anything I’ve ever done.

Cool video. I bet the snake got back on the trail after you were gone. It's a good place for it to sun. They're like us, they love the sun. Best to just try to find a safe path around them and maybe draw an arrow in the trail or with sticks to warn other hikers. I'd love to do a long hike like that one day.
