I would rock...for $400. Seriously, CME can be so ridiculous with their prices! There is nothing left of this guitar that gives it the inherent value of a 1970 Telecaster - it doesn't even look like any of the hardware or electronics are original.
At this point, the guitar's value comes purely from its character - and that's not worth much. They may find a buyer for this (some rich guitar collector looking for a one-of-a-kind conversation piece) - but that person's a sucker in my opinion.

Hey Trogly, the reason the neck looks refinished is probably due to the fact that in that era fender switched the lacquer from nitro to poly on all of the neck except for the headstock. The logo for some reason wouldn't bond to the poly like it would nitro, so they kept the front of the headstock nitro, (that's why it's all aged and stuff) and the rest poly.

Prior to buying I requested a sound demo - which they didn’t want to provide because of sound compression. Somewhat understandable I suppose. Then I asked if they could throw in any free stuff considering it’s one of their high end LPs, but all I got was a hat and t-shirt... Was expecting maybe some cables or strings. At the end of the day shame on me for not clarifying with them, but it still seemed a bit cheap on their end.

The reason for the discrepancy on the neck finish is that during that time Fender was using polyester on the whole neck minus the peghead face. The Fender decal was not compatible with new polyester material so they'd shoot the face only in nitrocellulose so they could keep using the existing decals. I own a 70s Mustang bass with the same pristine looking neck finish but orange UV faded and weather checked peghead face.

Interesting story, in a sense, to see how people can butcher a guitar, but the price, I'm dumb struck that anyone would consider buying it for anywhere near that price. In fact, I just don't see the appeal of vintage guitars and the strange culture we live in that think there is anything special about them. I keep reading stories about how great iconic guitarists (Ed King, David Gilmour, Peter Green, to name three) don't think there is anything special about their old guitars, yet to so many others the term "vintage" seems to equate to "magic", that they are happy to pay ridiculous prices for. It's just weird, I don't get it.

That 'Pirate SG' reminds me of a story I once read about Edward Van Halen sawing off the lower horn on an SG he was using to record the slide parts for the song 'Dirty Movies' from Van Halen's 'Fair Warning' album, because it was in the way :-))

Also, I had seen a picture of Paul McCartney not all that long ago of him playing a Telecaster with a similar shape, minus the lower horn modification. But it made sense in his case as he's left-handed and that Tele was a regular righthanded one. EDIT: It was a Tele copy modified with a Gizmotron, I just found out.

In the 70s Fender used poly on the back of the necks and the fretboard but would finish the headstock in nitro so the logos would stick better that's why it's all yellowed while the fretboard is pristine

Wow what a hack job there.

There's a picture of Paul McCartney playing a Telecaster that had been the same piece of the body cut away.
As a left handed guitarist my self, I know playing a right handed Telecaster limits access to the top frets, but I would never do that to any guitar.

Look at pig champion's (rip) guitar with the sawn off wing! Scott Ian has designed his own line of guitars (surfcaster?) he may have been experimenting with New shapes.

And the 3-saddle bridge was swapped out for individual saddles. My bolt-on SG Junior had a strap button secured by a neck screw...it was in the way of my playing so i moved it to the back of the top cutaway like a B.C. Rich; I'd gut it out before i even think of rocking something like that!

I've seen another video featuring a Telecaster which had been used by a lead guitarist who worked for Bob Dylan in the 70s (and not Robbie Robertson or Mark Knopfler) and had been 'modified' in a similar way to make it suitable for left-handed playing. That was my immediate thought when I saw this. It could well have been modified for that purpose or in imitation of that guitar.

Totaly cool. Kind of reminds me of the Dean Cadillac. Bottom of a Les Paul and top of an Explorer. Well the top left part does.
Think my favorite hacked up telecaster is the Jeff Beck Esquire. G.E. Smith did a video with one too. Can't remember whose it was but that one was cool to.

Scott Ian does mention in his book having a early 70s tele that was coffee table brown with a black pic guard. It was his first electric guitar, there aren’t any pictures or mention of body modifications though.

Just to add he said he traded it very early on for a strat. It’s unlikely he sold it to anyone, considering his age he also wouldn’t be “famous” at that point.

back in the day ... late 60's , 70's ... Tele's were a dime a dozen ( except PRE CBS) 6 gigs and you had enough to buy another new one plus necessities like beer and drugs. Players thought nothing of "personalizing" their axes. No concern for re-sale value. (Lack of forsight) lol Guitars first and foremost were a "tool" ... you tweaked them to "your" own specs to play and sound how "you" liked. Secondly you modded them to suit your "look" ... never a thought about re-sale value. I remember filing down the back of the neck on my 67 Telecaster to alter the profile to "my" liking. I also sanded off the finish on the body and stained it with food colouring, and then finished it using shaker cans of polyeurathane. I liked it .. it "worked" for me . That's "all" that mattered. I have no regrets. Some players would polish their guitar after every show and were always worrying about scratches and dents etc. We called them ANAL lol I'm sure they are a lot richer now ... but I don't care . I had my fun.
This old Tele , that's for sale now ... it is what it is. Whoever had it , enjoyed it. That's all that matters. I applaud that.
"Without good providence" it isn't worth what they're asking. Maybe $800 for parts ?

I love the way the finish looks with the worn stickers. I like the brass knobs. I could even look past the horn modification because it seems to have been done with care. But you lose me at the top bout modification. It's just a little too far. Now, if I could have the guitar for free, or next to free, I would gladly take it. And it would help if I could prove it was Scott Ian's once.
It reminds me of a guitar I saw at The Spotted Cat in New Orleans. I forgot the musician's name. It was a custom tele style guitar made from a timber that was originally part of a wooden ship. The ship was stripped for timber to be made into houses. It was part of the owner's home that he was renovating. A real piece of NO history. Picture a tele cut out of a too-narrow board so that all the bouts and horn end in flat spots.

70s Teles are decent sleepers, no 2 screw/1 bolt design. The finishes,... I've been fighting my blk 78 recently, it's like polishing a soft mirror.

I could see it. I know Scott Ian used to play a Telecaster back in the '80s, but that was an ESP. They even based a signature model on it too. And his later signatures have had weird horns like that.

    • @jamesroberts7489
      @jamesroberts7489 4 ปีที่แล้ว

His signature models were mid/late 90s, fairly sure they were Jackson’s but I know he also had a Washburn signature with similar style.

The knobs are likely original, chromed brass is the stock item, but the chrome often wears off.

  • @krazykat64

The Scott Ian story may be plausible. He had a preference for ESP TE model guitars back in Anthrax heyday in the 80’s, so that’s a bit of a connection.
