Great video. I love Blackmagic cameras, but the Ursa is way too big for my use. Hope that they will update the pocket line up this year. My bmpcc4k is in dire need for a refresh
Isn't the 6K the updated version? They just released a new 6K between the pro and normal one (G2) I'd love to see a Blackmagic point and shoot style like the original with a inbuilt lense version and a lens mount version. Good budget option or a good option for video and stills
@@mitchhifi9192 that's correct. But the pro is also already two years old if I am not mistaken. It has a super 35 sensor opposed to a micro 43 sensor on the bmpcc4k. And I'd personally would love to see a bmpcc4k pro with a m43 sensor maybe also with a new body
great review I just got the URSA G2 and I absolutely love it!! The image quality is crazy I started filming a short and I'm blown away every time I shoot.
Two major things I don't like. 1) can't change settings while the camera is on your shoulder 2) it's impossible to balance with broadcast lenses. Oh, and third minor complaint is that you can feed timecode and genlock simultaneously (unless you buy an ATEM), unlike any other "broadcast" camera. Good value for money tho, compare to the cheapest alternative from Sony that is PXW-Z450 for 23000€. Obviously a PXW has much more "value" in some ways, although you can't swap the mount.
Totally fair. I guess they are just two different kinds of systems with the Blackmagic being kind of a "hybrid" cinema and broadcast camera. The Sony is for sure being a well dedicated broadcast system. I do like the idea of saving $20k+ though 👍
Hey thanks so much for that. After an horrendously nerdy start this video fast became one of the best reviews of this camera. Thanks for that. I know it’s great to show you have a sense of humour but maybe you don’t need the giant headphones and deadcat. The detail in the video was greatas was your undoubted enthusiasm for the camera. Thx. So much makes sense but so much left unsaid. The simplicity of an all in one camera sounds great as opposed to frankenrigging a dslr or fx3 but in practice the screen isn’t good enough without an evf. And these days a fixed screen and a camera that big?? Just blackmagic keeping their production costs low? On shoulder great but gimbal use is out unless it’s a pro set up. ImAge is identical to bmpcc6k pro and although that is a wholly unprofessional design it’s hard to see justifying the extra spend if you like bm raw and colour. Though I take the idea of looking pro so often for client work looking pro is having lighting, production assistants running around and video village set up. Not sure it’s Netflix approved and maybe it’s a Goldilocks camera between the 4.6k bmpp and the 12k but it’s not cheap by time an evf is factored in. Everything shoots amazing images these days and the ir issues with bm are still an issue when it’s compared to Sony canon and red. The 6k image is amazingly detailed but there is something annoyingly filmic about the image (maybe it’s those blacks) that seems to lock it into a little too filmic a look. The modern image is getting sharper and there is something insanely present about hyper detailed cameras these days that don’t try to be like film but look modern. And digital even. So much tv is on Sony and canon have always nailed docs just as Red have nailed colour, cinema rigs and pro workflows. I miss having a bm camera and the 6k image still is more detailed than fx6 and c70 out of the box but now c70 has raw as does the fx6 the images have a fidelity that is hard to beat. Throw in a Red Komodo that is an modular dream and built to be used as a film camera with menus and tools you’d expect at a pro level and you have a lot of cameras at that price point look better in spec. Autofocus and rf mount aren’t essential but they really help at times. So many choices but great to see you are so enthusiastically happy with yours. Thanks so much.
Thank you for the great review, i have 4 Ursa broadcast G2 excellent cameras for live works with b4 lenses, ATEM mixer, CCU panel. As for documentary and corporate work with EF and PL lenses, best camera for the money. I have owned them since they came out i never had any problems.
I was really interested in the G2 4.6k but ended up getting an fx6 since I have been using Sony for the past 3 years. I do love the look the BM senor produces. Very organic and filmic. I do have to say the fx6 is very light which is good and bad cause having to add weight. I do love the side grip handle that comes with it and its very nice for run and gun situations. I love the xlrs are on the body of the G2, Sony putting it on the handle!??! I also use premiere pro, and not resolve so that's just another reason I have never just went for trying BM. I still would like to just mess around with one eventually. Just hold one lol. Awesome review! Keep creating!
@@jakehayden998 I love it. It's my first cinema camera, so maybe I'm biased towards it. But it's awesome. I came from an a7siii and fx3. Just wanted to finally upgrade. Still use those as b cams and for weddings. The fx6 isnt ideal for weddings lol. It's overkill I think. I may try it though. I only have had it for 2 weeks
@@BryceDocherty I also came from an A7siii and an FX3! I used an URSA for weddings for a couple of years, and yes, using a cinema camera for weddings is a bit much most of the time. Definitely heavier than an FX3, but honestly its not the worst thing in the world. Give it a try
The URSA G2 4.6k is a great movie camera that offers excellent image quality and color, but it requires a team of people to help the photographer capture the footage, and it is not recommended for individual users. But if you have a mature team, this machine can meet almost all your graphics needs.
@@jetzhang542 I'd like to respectfully disagree. In my experience, the G2 4.6k is a great documentary/solo shooter camera. it's all in how it's set up for use.
Rolling shutter is just that straight jello effect that happens when you pan a camera too fast. The image will slant in a weird way and different cameras handle it differently
a slightly random question here what's your thoughts on the blackmagic broadcast ursa G2 v Canon XF605 im on a budget but need some advice with what camera to buy for filming or are they just worlds apart?
I've never shot with the XF605, so I don't really have any advice to give that is rooted in experience. I do know that the XF605 has a 1 inch sensor and the URSA Broadcast G2 has a Super 35 sensor, which is a huge difference. It would be hard to produce a shallow depth of field with the XF605, but it might be easier for high intensity field broadcast work when you don't want to worry about focus. What kind of projects do you work on?
I don't have the camera in front of me anymore so I can't verify with 100% confidence but - If you are recording in Blackmagic RAW then there will be no crop as long as you record in 6k. If you drop down to any other resolution it will crop. I don't remember exactly what the crop is. In Prores I think you can record 4k with no crop
There's a cropped 6k resolution, I believe it's 6k 2:41. It's hard to say how much it's helping with rolling shutter but it does look very slightly better to my eye. I'm usually delivering in a 2:35 aspect ratio anyway, so this was a pretty good option for me.
Whats the crop like when shooting in BRAW UHD? I am coming from the Pocket 4K and would love to shoot UHD on the broadcast without too much of a handicap. Really only would use 6k for larger projects. Great video btw!
Yeah I totally understand, I always prefer shooting in 4k as opposed to 6k if I can help it. The normal sensor crop is about 1.6k in 6k, and in 4k I believe it's about 2.4x
Been debating getting this or the 4.6K G2. Mostly want to use it for cinema productions. Is the 4K cropped on the Broadcast G2 with the EF mount? I have seen the rolling shutter is better on the 4.6K, but it doesn't seem horrendous on the Broadcast G2.
If you record in BRAW and record in 4k it will be cropped unfortunately. I usually am recording BRAW at 6k but at a higher compression (like 12:1) to avoid massive file sizes. You can also record 4k in ProRes with no crop as another option. Rolling shutter is for sure better on the 4.6k G2, but the Broadcast G2 is much cheaper and better in low light. I guess it depends on what you will be shooting as far as which camera would be a better purchase.
@@jakehayden998 After more research and coming back to your video several times, I will be going with Broadcast G2! I saw some comparisons of the rolling shutter between the Pocket 6k and the G2 and it is slightly better if not comparable to the pocket 4k where it wont be as much as an issue as I initially thought (I'm a long time Pocket 4K user). Shooting in the 5K mode might help too, but still keeping in mind I might have to fix it in post. I did, however hear after the gyro stabilization update that it helps reduce the rolling shutter effect, but I will need to test this. In the end, it's a great price for a great camera for my needs. The 12k might be one I get down the line, but the Broadcast G2 is great for my need for events, documentary, indie film productions and shooting vfx plates.
Really great question. URSA Mini Pro G2 Pros - better dynamic range, better rolling shutter performance, more framerate options Cons - worse low light performance Broadcast G2 Pros - 6k (could be a pro or a con), really nice low light sensitivity, much cheaper Cons - Worse rolling shutter, less dynamic range Overall the Broadcast G2 might be better if you are constantly shooting in unpredictable situations, but the URSA Mini Pro G2 gives a higher quality image as long as you have enough light
hi i dont have experience with BM but i noticed in all the reviews that the image is hazy, like there is a very thin layer of fog. i dont know, earlier i thought its color correction by individual reviewers but almost all bmp4k bmp6k and now this i see the same thing. or maybe it is low on contrast? i mean sometimes i think the image is log without any lut applied. can you do some color correction experiments on some of ur footage and do side by side with contrast and saturation but over done and normal and under done i think it already is. thanks
I think it is just the way people grade their footage. I tend to gravitate towards a lower contrast look personally, and this is probably responsible for the kind of "foggy" look. A lot of filmmakers grade footage to have a slightly lower contrast look. If you like a more punchy and contrasty look, the footage out of the Broadcast G2 looks really really great. The 6k resolution really punches hard when you have deep blacks and bright highlights. Definitely stay tuned, there's more content on the way, especially regarding filmmaking and color work
The two ranges are 100 - 1000, and 1250 - 25,600. If you are shooting in RAW you do have the flexibility of changing the ISOs in post, but you do have to choose which ISO range you want. If you record at 400 ISO you won't be able to change it to 3200 ISO in post for example. There are two ISO ranges. At the heart of those ranges are the preferred ISOs the sensor gives the most balanced dynamic range upwards and downwards, and those are ISOs are 400 and 3200. You are right, there are two ISO ranges in RAW, but those ranges still use the same natives ISOs as their fulcrum.

Loved the review, I have a couple of questions as an absolute beginner film maker, firstly what's the autofocus like on this camera? Secondly, would you recommend this camera for shooting super low budget feature films?
The autofocus on the Broadcast G2 is essentially non-existent. There is a single shot autofocus, which is pretty primitive and not useable for video by any means. This is in character for cinema cameras however, most bodies that are meant for high end filmmaking don't have any kind of autofocus. What camera would I recommend for low budget filmmaking? Excellent question. It depends on how low budget it is, and also what your needs are. I have a video coming out about the Pocket Cinema 4k pretty soon, which I think is one of the best options for low budget cinema. I hope to make a ton of videos this year covering cameras of every price bracket, so stay tuned! Good luck on your filmmaking journey.
Thank you for your review. I'm planning to replace my trusty PDW680 for a URSA Broadcast G2 (with my 17x Canon HJ-series lens). This video was very helpful. I've read people complaining about the reliability of the URSA camera's. I understand you don't had any issues with them? Thanks again and greetings from The Netherlands

@@jakehayden998 Incredible! I’m on the fence for my first cinema camera. This video was very helpful. And I totally agree, having everything built in may be the dealbreaker for me. The Red Komodo has always been my dream camera but wondering if the cost to use case makes sense.
@@JAXTWIN There is for sure a lot of extra money involved with a Komodo, plus it might not be as "clean" as a cinema body that is designed to be all inclusive. That being said the Komodo shoots ridiculously good images and is totally worth it. You'll be able to shoot great stuff with whatever you choose, I'm sure
Broadcast G2 is going to have better lowlight performance and higher resolution (and also cheaper) URSA Mini Pro 4.6k G2 has better rolling shutter and better dynamic range
I would love to get my hands on that thing one day. I felt strongly about the Broadcast G2 because it seems to be super under appreciated right now and I really wanted to shed some light on it. Working on a piece with the 12k would be amazing. I'll jump on that chance as soon as I get it
@@jakehayden998 I'm torn between the two but either way, they both seem to be great at what they do. Plus, I'm also biased because Blackmagic is an Australian company taking on the world!
@@ozzmanzz Gotta love it. From what I've read the URSA 12k is Blackmagic's highest performing sensor in most regards. If you shoot in 4k (which if I owned it I probably would most of the time) the rolling shutter is almost non existent. Plus there is no crop. (aside from the 1.3x crop it already has). Personally I would probably spring for the Broadcast G2 in most cases unless rolling shutter is a big issue for my current project, just for the money saved. You'll be able to shoot amazing stuff with either though. Cheers.
I love Blackmagic (I own 2 bmpcc 6K) and was considering upgrading to the broadcast G2 or the ursa 12K but ended up going for the Canon C70: The image quality is very close to gen5, the battery life is amazing, the autofocus works, it has internal ND's, it's gimbal friendly and shoots raw. The only thing I miss is the extra resolution. Did you get a chance to try it?
I've only shot with the C70 a couple of times, but I do know it's a phenomenal camera. I would love to get my hands on it again somehow and shoot some with it
I love this camera I have one ,the only problem is the majority of the people who doesn't now this camera thinks is better to work with the sony's line,,, just for the brand. So is hard to find work with this camera.
I forget to mention,, davinci resolve,,,I use to work with premiere and final cut, and the beginning was hard to use the davinci, but now I now I was wasting time and money with premiere.
Love the camera’s flexibility and image quality, however getting purples in real life to look like purple in camera are real chore. If you dig deep enough you’ll see this discussed pretty regularly.
I love BMD as a company and how they dont bs their costumers like other brands do but, honestly, at this point, there are so many options that are much smaller, much more capable (ibis, caf) and some even fullframe if thats what you want. Lumix S5IIx, Fuji X-H2(s), Nikon Z9, or even Sony FX3 if you dont need RAW and or Prores.

At the heart of those ranges are the preferred ISOs the sensor gives the most balanced dynamic range upwards and downwards, and those are ISOs are 400 and 3200. You are right, there are two ISO ranges in RAW, but those ranges still use the same natives ISOs as their fulcrum.
@@jakehayden998 yes, I know these things very well, been testing them a LOT lately and I found out many things, forex. -5 stops is peace of kake to bm kamera. Juss choose enough space for blaks (iso100 forex)

I don't see this model on their website, is it discontinued?
On the website it doesn't live where the other URSA's live, it's down in the broadcast camera section
@@jakehayden998Now I see it, thanks.
G1 is my favorite. Cinema dang is a must for me.
great video. i subscribed.
does it have gen5?
Hey Erik, ik heb zelf al een tijdje ervaring met meerdere Ursa en blackmagic cameras. Als je er ooit over wil praten wil ik graag vragen voor je beantwoorden.
@@NebulousFilms Looks like my previous reaction was not posted correctly. Yes please! I would love to hear more. In Dutch: Misschien via Facebook Messenger? Voor de zekerheid laat ik ook een berichtje achter op jullie website. Thanks so much!!!
Of course there will be variation with different users, but yes I have never had any problems with any of my URSAs
@@jakehayden998 Glad to hear that.
Thank you so much for your quick reply!
Keep up the good work.
@@erikneek Is goed, hoe kan ik je vinden op facebook?
Great video! What did you shoot the A roll with for this video?
C200 in RAW and a Sigma 18-35 1.8
@@jakehayden998 Incredible! I’m on the fence for my first cinema camera. This video was very helpful. And I totally agree, having everything built in may be the dealbreaker for me. The Red Komodo has always been my dream camera but wondering if the cost to use case makes sense.
@@JAXTWIN There is for sure a lot of extra money involved with a Komodo, plus it might not be as "clean" as a cinema body that is designed to be all inclusive. That being said the Komodo shoots ridiculously good images and is totally worth it. You'll be able to shoot great stuff with whatever you choose, I'm sure
iso 3200 on my 6k is useless, this looks so clean
The REAL reason why URSA great, it’s the fraction of the cost of building a RED or ARRI rig. That’s it
how would you compair it to th g2 4.6k, which i personally own
Broadcast G2 is going to have better lowlight performance and higher resolution (and also cheaper)
URSA Mini Pro 4.6k G2 has better rolling shutter and better dynamic range
@@jakehayden998 thanks, I think for what I ill prob stick with the G2
I had to like this the moment you did a backwards roll...
Wait - its 3200 asa is useable? It’s disgusting on the previous G2. And the sensor is S35mm size? Not 2/3 inch like video cameras? Wacky!
Thanks for your video. Did you consider the 12k?
Cheers.
Dang this video is amazing. I just bought two!
Updated Red 6k dragon body with all fxings
Nice!!!!🔥🔥🔥
fuckqin sick intro ayysoooo that box throw cut hahahahaha bro
Made me fall in love maynnnn
Love the camera’s flexibility and image quality, however getting purples in real life to look like purple in camera are real chore. If you dig deep enough you’ll see this discussed pretty regularly.
Purples are tough usually you are right
I used to shoot with the Ursa Mini. I miss that camera. These cameras are a good option for run and gun stuff with “cinema” quality.
You know your Mic 🎤 sucks when you put shaggy sock on it indoors. 😂
Looks like an exocomp from star trek.
8k televisions just came out so 4.6k has come to little.
yeah and they're all garbage, and nobody will ever stream in 8k, and if they will, it will be compressed to dogs
hell yes , i extreamly love cameras unboxing + 1 new subsfuckingcriber XD
Nice 🥰👍
Auto focus
the joys of autofocus. not.
Hi
"the colour science is great"..vison shows washed out loggy image
💜💙🖤🤎
Do you keep calling a PL mount "b4?" uh.....
B4 is a lens mount for broadcast cameras, PL is usually for cinema use
It’s not works he price though for 5000
Bucks theres a lot of options that I think are better than the it’s broadcast. I mean dude why would you even ned this lol no point
What other options do you think are better?
