    Whitebeard the man who made the world call his mustache a beard

    • @Vikkibro90
      @Vikkibro90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      iirc "hige" in "shirohige" does not mean beard but just facial hair so i guess white facial hair or white mustache did not sound fancy enough besides the name blackbeard popped up before whitebeard and since there was a rl pirate named blackbeard i guess they just put them together at least that is my guess
      PS whitebeard rolls much better on the tongue than white facial hair or white mustache so maybe that had something to do with it

      You're asking whether Whitebeard was the strongest man on earth? Let's see... It took all three great powers (Marine, Shichibukai and 1 future Yonko, Blackbeard) to take him down, in the process he completely destroyed the marine HQ, has beaten one admiral, several vice admirals, hundreds of marine soldiers and made Blackbeard whimper. After all that damage which would have killed a normal man 1000x times he passed away........ STANDING!!!
      So was he the strongest man on earth? Probably.

    One thing you alluded to, and I really appreciate, is that Luffy didn't get some out of nowhere power up upon Ace's death. I appreciate that so much, and it makes Luffy that much more approachable as a character. Also, what was cool about Whitebeard and Marineford was its handling of power creep. Not only did they do a great job of conveying the mights of the strongest characters, Oda cleverly kept many of their fights offscreen, or put necessary limits on them, like Whitebeard being sick and not going all out, since his priority was saving Ace.

      Whitebeard reminded me of Wrath from Fullmetal Alchemist. They both complain about their old age but are still so overwhelmingly powerful you're like, "If they're still this powerful now, how unstoppable were they in their _prime?_ " Even injured or sick, they're unstoppable. Fuck, Wrath nearly beat a fully healthy Scar with mortal wounds. He took down a goddamn tank and that was only with a sword.

      Glad you brought it up, but it was actually 1991. _Avengers: Infinity War_ (the film ) is based on the comic event (crossovers plus miniseries) _The Infinity Gauntlet._ Bits of it actually date to the two-issue _Thanos Quest_ miniseries that released in 1990. Not sure if anything from the sequel to _The Infinity Gauntlet_, the _*_comic event_*_ known as _The Infinity War_ made it into _Avengers: Infinity War._

    I liked ace but hated him in this arc. I don't blame him entirely for getting captured by blackbeard despite being told not to chase after him but what he did after getting freed by luffy was frustrating to watch.
    he wasted everyone's efforts and sacrifice in rescuing him by very easily getting triggered by an equivalent of someone saying "ur dad gay". all his allies and crew that were fighting, dying, died and/or captured for his sake, his beloved father figure that would exchange his own life in order to give them an opening to escape, his brother that endured the worst prison in the world and would face the marine admirals and shichibukai even on his own just to save him, all their efforts flushed down the toilet when he took that bait. I know he died because he save luffy but its still his fault they stopped running and confronted akainu just because he insulted whitebeard. akainu wasn't even chasing after them and but ace still came back to fight him because of that one insult. I wouldn't mind if he died for more sensible reasons but this was just stupid.
    the other thing that was frustrating(I know I've been repeating it a lot) was when blackbeard was attacking marineford but the three admirals were still chasing after the fleeing whitebeard pirates. ace is already dead and the whitebeard pirates don't want to fight anymore but the admirals still choose to chase after them instead of protecting the marine main base from being attacked by another enemy faction. priorities please!

      @rhondahoward8025 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@hylertull Yeah, but he died as he wanted to, as Jinbei said. It _was_ frustrating but you know how pride is in One Piece. I mean, Franky denying possession of his ships would be logical to any normal person but Tom punched the hell out of him for that and told him to have pride in his creations, even if they go on to destroy the world. Sanji giving food to Krieg was also logically stupid, but he did it out of principle. He simply can't let anyone go hungry if he can help it, even if it's the devil himself. Same with Chopper. He treated Z, a very dangerous man, because he's a doctor. It's just how he is.

    Had Ace only brushed off what Akainu said about Whitebeard, everybody's sacrifice for him wouldn't be wasted. Oars Jr. got wrecked just to give WB pirates an opening, Luffy has been fighting since Impel down, lots of people died to reach the stand, and everything that happened went down the drain because he got selfish. He could've just taken what Akainu said and escaped. At least he could live another day, plan his revenge against Akainu and not WASTE EVERYBODY'S EFFORT.

    Of everything stated in this, my favorite is what you said about Garp.
    Most of the time, I see people hating on Garp for "How can you not save your own family"
    It wasn't that simple of a decision for Garp, which is WHY he, as you stated, "Let Luffy Punch him". That's another thing most people don't seem to mention when referring Garp's decision, is that he LET Luffy punch him.

    • @rhondahoward8025
      @rhondahoward8025 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Garp was stuck between a rock and a hard place in the most sadistic way possible and he really didn't have many options. And it explains so much. It's why he was so tough on his grandsons, why he always pushed Ace and Luffy to become marines, etc.

    • @Shushkin
      @Shushkin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Garp was a marine to his bones. He was training ace and Luffy to be strong marines. That's all he'd be talking about with Luffy and ace. It'd be safe to say that the marines aren't just a career choice for him. It's like his 2nd family one might say. Despite hating the celestial dragons, he genuinely believes that the marines do more good in the world.

      @madmaster0015 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kadir yildirim Trafalgar Law is a great choice; always want to see more of his pirate crew dynamic. It would be cool to see him form his crew and everything else up until he first meets Luffy.
      But also want to see Ace get more of a journey and character development between him leaving his home and him joining Whitebeard.

    • @kadudeduder5103
      @kadudeduder5103 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MAD Master001 Ace looked like the only with personality and the only powerhouse of his crew, it would be interesting to see who Ace's crew was. This is the main problem with most supernova to imo. They all look like strong and interesting captains with a nobody crew. I hope Oda will flesh them out more.
      Like most of the One piece world after he's done with the main series. Maybe one about Garp fighting ROCKS or Gold Roger's journey to Raftal(not entirely ofcourse).

    I will disagree that it is a dangerous thing to label any character "The strongest there is". I think it is a good thing, and I will borrow the arguments from someone who made a review of My Hero Academia.
    In both MHA and One Piece, we have a character dubbed "The Strongest". The reason this should be considered a good thing, is because we now have a ceiling of power. It grounds the level of power scaling in this world, avoiding a Dragon Ball scenario where they just keep getting stronger and stronger into absurdity. Showing us the power of the person who is the Strongest in the World tells us that, yes, there is a limit to how strong you can get. But it's also a glimpse into the future, because it shows how powerful the protagonist is expected to get, without us ending in a situation like in DBZ again, where the Protagonist just ups the ante one more time.
    Yes, it can feel dissatisfying if the character in question is killed off unceremoniously, but if you avoid that particular trap, having someone who serves as the "Power Roof" can be of great benefit to the story.

    • @MoostachedSaiyanPrince
      @MoostachedSaiyanPrince 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kapuchu I agree for the most part, except using DBZ as an example. After all, DBZ did the same thing with "the strongest" multiple times. The first two that I can think of are Demon King Piccolo, and later Vegeta both of whom were considered to be the strongest people ever at that point in the story. Then later in the Namek Saga, Frieza was declared by pretty much every character in the series up to that point to be the singular strongest being in the entire Universe. And yes, I know that the power scaling continued to climb up to even more absurd levels after that, but that's besides the point. Just because a character is declared the strongest, doesn't mean that someone significantly stronger can't show up later. I'm not saying the same will happen with One Piece, in fact I would say that's next to impossible, mostly because Oda has a long term plan for his series, whereas Toriyama was pressured onto continuing the series past the point he would've chosen to end his story on multiple occasions. I'm just saying that "The World's Strongest" trope doesn't necessarily mean that you won't end up with nonsensically overpowered characters later on in the series, it simply puts a roof on what you can expect to be the characters limits for the near future in the series. It could easily turn into a narrative garbage fire if the writer doesn't handle it properly.

    • @1Kapuchu100
      @1Kapuchu100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you're misunderstanding my point a little. I know that several of DBZ's villains were dubbed "The Strongest Ever" several times, and yet they were always one-upped. When I say that it's a good thing to have a character who is The Strongest, I mean it in the sense of "This guy is THE strongest, and he will never be eclipsed in the entirety of the story", which is opposite of what Dragon Ball did. Doing it this way provides a power ceiling, and a capped point of growth. It gives the readers a bit of hype, making them want to see the protagonist get that strong, but while also instilling the knowledge that there is a limit to how strong a character can get.

    • @MoostachedSaiyanPrince
      @MoostachedSaiyanPrince 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kapuchu It really doesn't create a permanent power ceiling though. Like you said, there were multiple times the "strongest ever" characters were one upped in DBZ, but there was never any indication at the time that they would be. When King Piccolo, Vegeta, and Frieza were introduced and eventually defeated, it always seemed as though we had hit the limit of what the characters in that series were capable of, as though no one could ever be stronger. It's the same as what Oda did with White Beard, except that Akira Toriyama was pressured into continuing the series after point where he would've preferred to stop, and thus had to keep one upping his previous strongest villains. If he hadn't done that, Dragon Ball would've ended at Frieza, or possibly even sooner. If Oda chose to, he could do the same exact thing with One Piece, introduce a new character who's power dwarfs White Beards whose existence was never known to the rest of the world for some reason. I didn't misunderstand your point, and I wasn't trying to argue with you, I was just saying that the "worlds strongest man" trope doesn't necessarily mean that you've seen the limit of what characters in that series will be capable of in the long run, as well as the fact that it can backfire when used by a writer who doesn't have a good long term plan for their series.

STANDING!!!So was he the strongest man on earth? Probably.

    *post watching video comment
    So I normally don't leave gigantic comments on your channel but I feel like some conversation is worth it here.
    1. This is the pinnacle of what anime and manga can be in my opinion.
    2. Despite whitebeard dying roughly 8 years ago in the manga he is still my favorite character ever. Like ever ever. Like in all of everything everything. He is the perfect representation of everything I think is cool in a character.
    3. I find it very interesting how you say most people didn't enjoy the slowing down of the war in the anime, for I feel the exact opposite. I enjoyed the anime a lot more than the manga because I was not caught up to the manga weekly until the next arc. So when I read the manga it felt very much like oda was rushing through everything. Some moments felt trifled on because of what happened in the previous chapter and I just was a much bigger fan of the anime taking it's time and allowing the arc a little breathing room. But I grew up with dragonball z so I guess I'm almost used to that. I will say, post time skip the anime has officially become unwatchable for me though. I stopped watching the anime around halfway through Fishman and just kept up with the manga at that point.

    Ha ha! This was great! Oh, you may have just caused me to rethink my order for the best arcs of the series.
    I was likely hung-up & exhausted with the whole "great manga wars" period of the time, as Bleach had the Arrancar War & Naruto had the 4th Great Ninja War all around the same time, and all of them never really reached that perfect level of mayhem & strategy that I associate with the concept. I always envision something with the description of "war" to take place over multiple days & over a broad area, and my reservation at calling this arc a "war" is because we only really see the climactic battle at Marineford.
    Yes, perhaps the conflict is the largest yet seen in the anime, but it didn't quite feel that way. . . somehow. For example, Alubarna seems approximate in size to Marineford, & Crocodile had a bomb placed to blow it up (darn you Pel Effect). Eneru was going to sink an entire island. Even Enies Lobby suffered a multiple-wave invasion & eventual desolation under the Buster Call. All of those appeared to suffer a cataclysm on par with Whitebeard at Marineford, & the melee in the encircling wall wasn't quite the spectacle that the Strawhat/Galley-la/Franky Family Alliance's drive to the courthouse had.
    But that's just how I feel. I caught up with the anime immediately after Enies Lobby & picked up the manga in the middle of Thriller Bark, & as such I'll always have a soft spot for the eternal daylight isle. Certainly, Whitebeard delivered on everything he was promised to be & he remains one of my favorite anime characters PERIOD. The change in the power structure post-war was monumental & influential. And you're right, I too was one of those readers who believed Ace wouldn't die because of the Pel Effect & because Marco is the LITERAL EMBODIMENT OF THE REVIVING FLAME.
    . . . I thought it was so obvious. . . And it would have been the most clever & foreshadowed implementation of the Pel Effect, too!

    I believe the brilliance(a term I do not use lightly) of Marineford isn't just that it is a huge spectacle event with enormous stakes, but how Oda managed to tie almost every singe character into this conflict with his or her own motivations for fighting. Take Crocodile for example. His motivation for getting to Marineford was to kill WhiteBeard. When that was not an option, he chose to fight not out of loyalty, but because he hated the World Government and didn't want them to win by killing Ace. It is stuff like this that make me appreciate the arc. Even if the ending dragged a bit. And why this is my second favorite arc in OP.

    Ok, Marineford Arc is almost a decade ago (wow, incredible to say it out loud), so I probably forgot many details, but why exactly is a one day battle called a "war"? It always bugged me.

    • @thepredman9lol266
      @thepredman9lol266 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      War (to simplify it) - The clash of 2 or more factions/groups in a combatical manor, in which weaponry, death, and bloodshed are all key factors. Basically, Marineford is a Paramount War because its the clashing of multiple factions and groups, such as the World Govt. And the Whitebeard Pirates, in an all out battle where many people die and heaps of blood is shed. THATs a WAR, no matter how long it goes for.

    • @ironleaf1527
      @ironleaf1527 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thepredman9lol266 The intention in my question was why it's called 'war' rather than 'battle'. maybe I should have made myself clear. I do know the definition of war, but thank you very much for reminding. War is a large scale event comprising a number of battles, and involving one or more nations or fractions. A battle on the other hand is a rather small scale combat, which is usually localized.
      The Battles of Marathon, Waterloo or Monte Cassino are considered battles within a war between multiple fractions, which had consequences for the overall war. What bugs me is how one single battle that introduces & concludes a conflict between two fractions, is considered a war rather than a battle.

    You said this in the previous arc reviews that the Straw Hats were not Big players in the world, but that never really hit me until this arc. Luffy is of minor importance in the grand scheme of things, he helped, but this was Whitebeard's arc. I probably could not count on two hands the number of people there who could defeat Luffy.
