    As far as I'm aware in Japan they use the same word for beard and mustache "Hige" which would just translate to facial hair. So you have Kurohige and Shirohige which would literally translate to black/white facial hair. I guess the English translators just decided "Whitebeard" was better than "White Facial Hair".

    From our guy Tekking101's vids on beards in One Piece: in the Japanese language, they don't have different words for beards and stache's, all is "facial hair". Ignoring that though, it's telling how strong Whitebeard was that literally no one was willing to point out he had a 'stache, and not a beard.

    • @AgeofJP
      @AgeofJP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The mustache is part of the beard, even in english...there is no wrong terminoligy here, only the wrong assumption on your part . Not sure if "facial hair" also includes eyebrows, if not it's 100% synonymous for beard.

    • @Mikeztarp
      @Mikeztarp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      That's not quite true: there are separate words, but they all include the word "beard":
      口髭 (literally "mouth beard"): moustache
      顎髭 (literally "chin beard"): beard, goatee
      頬髯 (literally "cheek beard"): whiskers
      You'll notice the second kanji is different each time. In all three cases it means "beard" and is pronounced the same way.
      So you understand how a guy with only a moustache can have a nickname that includes the word "beard" in Japanese. Translating it in English as "Whitemoustache" wouldn't have the same ring, or the obvious parallels between Whitebeard *(Edward* Newgate) and One Piece's Blackbeard (Marshall D. *Teach)* or the real world's Blackbeard *(Edward Teach).* Daniel's yin-yang metaphor was right on the money, and the onomastics underline that.
      PS: I just checked, and in the original version, Oda-sensei sidesteps this by calling him 「白ひげ」, i.e. not using a kanji. :)

    • @AgeofJP
      @AgeofJP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Mikeztarp You just made the same mistake and completely missed the point
      *Literally* "Chin beard" is not correctly translated as "beard"...that's the issue. The kanji at the end is the literal translation for beard as you even pointed out, so why put the word beard under chin beard next to goatee? Also Whitebeards japanese name doesn't say "literally chinbeard"..."Hige" just means "beard" and all the others are subgroups of "beard".
      A moustache is a beard, a goatee is a beard and so on...both Whitebeard and Shirohige are equally correct.
      Just to make it clear again, because that's how it is: Every moustache IS A BEARD

      Right now it's kind of debated that the narrator is between two individuals: Buggy and Yamato. Currently the favorite is Yamato - since they want to "be Oden" - which would basically make them the chronicler of the Straw Hats as their role in the crew, as no one has filled that spot yet. If Yamato _doesn't_ join the crew (which I find HIGHLY unlikely at this point), Buggy would thus be the favorite considering what is upcoming in chapter 1053 as a revelation that's pretty massive. Honestly? I'm not 100% sure. But Buggy shares his "special skill" of faking it till he makes it with Usopp, in that their lies/bragging tends to come true. I think the reason it may work out is because Buggy's "dream" isn't to become the Pirate King like Luffy, but to get as much treasure as possible.
      EDIT: I also just think it would be _hilarious_ because Shanks is a Yonkou. It'd be just up Oda's alley to make Buggy an Emperor simply because both he and Shanks were on Roger's ship as apprentices.

      The lineage (the D.'s), for instance, and the actual Wheel of Time theme, it was quite in the face also; the fact that things will change, and more quickly than the Marine expected.
      Luffy will bring the change by finding the One piece.
      And at this point (I actually watched these very episodes tonight, I'm at the same point as Daniel), I'm convinced the One Piece is not a physical treasure, it's either the New World/New world order ( exit the Marine Dictature), or even simply a state of mind : the will of the D's (D= smile), which will achieve the demise of the Marines, shared by the whole world population.
      The missing century will come into play somehow- the origine of the different kind of powers, their rules, and probably that Wheel of Time thing- in that past, People had something they're now missing and the Marines are protecting (to protect their own power)

    What I love is how Oda has built up Blackbeard. He originally comes off as kind of a clown, but in reality he is a genius with plans upon plans upon plans. From the start his whole plan was to take down Whitebeard and take his power and he moved things along in the background to achieve this. The way he went to Impel Down to gather the worst of the worst to fill out his crew which was the whole reason he captured Ace and joined the Warlords to begin with just shows he has been on step ahead of everyone else this whole time.

      It really is a good point to nail on. Pirates aren't necessarily good guys, but they have the freedom to choose. There are even pirates who fall closer to what the marines do, like Arlong's crew governing (aka holding hostage) Nami's village, but you still have plenty of pirates who can and do choose to not go that way. Additionally, due to their nature of not being a single organization like the Marines, these pirates don't get caught and tangled in the battle of morals and ideals like the occasional good Marine who has to confront the fact that they work with the same people who allow slavery and genocides when it suits them.
      That said, those marines like Koby finding themselves at those crossroads where they have to either compromise on who they are or choose to hold on to their values is also an interesting plot point. I like to think that Koby's intervention at the end of the war was equal parts of him helping Luffy and him trying to prevent the remaining marines from tarnishing his ideal of them any further by leaving their injured comrades to die. I think Koby will ultimately be a force within the Marines that will hold onto his ideals and will instead rebel against the "Absolute Justice" faction and to push the Marines to become something that matches his own sense of justice.

It's completely unlike other logia-types and Blackbeard obviously knew it was a special type of fruit, which is why he was willing to break the Pirates code and kill his crewmate for it. My money's on he read about it somewhere and knew that its unique power would let him steal a secondary fruit power, and it was his plan to steal Whitebeard's power from the very beginning.

    So glad you're loving One Piece Daniel. You may know this already, but there is a reason why Marineford is considered one of if not the best arc in One Piece. So many grand moments, action set pieces, and tons of underated scenes glossed over due to fantastic worldbuilding moments. In my eye Alabasta is my favorite arc, but I consider Marineford too damn good

    Fun fact, if you check back at chapter 552 the old crew of ace before joining whitebeard was revealed to be called the spade pirates. If you search up what Ace of spades symbolizes, it actually symbolizes bad luck or death. It was a great foreshadowing that ace was gonna die without us knowing.

    Love your description of Blackbeard as a trickster. Many people on their first watch/read through can overlook that pretty much every bit of power he has gained over the story thus far has been by out maneuvering his allies and enemies, with little to no moral regard. Only having to win one big fight with Ace, and getting incredibly lucky at impel down are the exceptions I can think of.

    "Hige" basically translates to facial hair(and Shiro to white) meaning it would technically be Whitefacialhair.
    But it doesn't really sound as badass as Whitebeard so the translators went with Whitebeard.

    I binged all of your One Piece vids just now, so I‘m gonna leave my comment about Usopp here:
    Usopp is the „normal“ guy of the crew, so he has massive feelings of inadequacy throughout the story, which can be seen with the multiple times he struggles to take action against adversities and his general insecuritys.
    When Luffy wants to „discard“ the Flying Lamb, Usopps insecurity about himself as a part of the crew kicks in and he tries everything he can to keep her. But really he wants to save himself from getting discarded by Luffy, as he projects himself onto the ship. Also the Lamb having its origins in Sirup Village underlines this :)
    I‘m really looking forward to your reactions and reviews of the following arcs and you most definitely deserve all the subs!

    Glad to see you made it through Marineford and your appreciation for Garp's character arc. One thing I really liked that Oda did for Garp was when he sits with Ace and laments that they didn't live the way he wanted them to. It puts so much of his behavior to them in perspective that he had a good idea that there was a high likelihood of them growing up to be on the wrong side of the law. In that way, it shows that his desire for them to be marines was his way of trying to avoid this very outcome. The way Oda wrote it solidifies the context of Garp's relationship with them and confirms that he does love them in his own way, but without asking us to forgive him for the abuse he put them through.
    One other aspect of Garp that is still untold by Marineford is his relationship with his son, aka Luffy's dad, Monkey D. Dragon. Considering his choices involving Ace and Luffy, it makes one wonder if he wasn't overcorrecting due to his experience with trying to raise Dragon and how that turned out with him becoming the most wanted criminal in the world and a direct threat to the Marines.
    There are two things I am curious about your reaction to that I don't think you touched on though. The first is Kuma's appearance in the war, which I remember you mentioned, but specifically on the pay-off of when Kuma told Luffy that they would not meet again right before he yeeted him to Amazon Lily. The fact that, once again, the Marines solidified how they are an organization that wants control at any cost by literally overwriting Kuma's personality and effectively "killing" him in response to his rebellion at Sabaody.
    Secondly, what about Oars Jr. though? Did you get the hurt feelings that Oars Jr. just wanted to save Ace as thanks for giving him a strawhat?
    Looking forward to your next reviews!

    Hey Daniel, as a long time one piece fan I’m super glad to see people like you and Merph enjoying the series so much. It’s so cool to see people who traditionally aren’t into anime and manga and are more into novels seeing how great of a series it is and spreading the word that it’s not just cartoons for kids, it’s really damn good literature that deserves praise (with some occasional cringe like thriller bark. Prepare for some more annoying stuff in fishman island. No series is perfect and I think that’s a low point).
    Since a booktuber like yourself got so invested in one piece, I decided to branch out and started a wheel of time book club with some friends!! Having first meet up tomorrow, so wanted you to see that spreading the love to other fandoms helps spread it back to yours as well, cuz I’m really enjoying eye of the world and I hear it only gets better.
    Much love man, excited to see your journey continue and get to the point where we can talk about current themes and arcs up to the current point. At that point you should collab with like tekking or morj. I think y’all would have a fun time😁 but until then still avoid, big series so spoilers galore lol
