The entire arc is basically Magellan moving up and down through the prison and kicking everyone's asses. There's two former warlords and a commander of the revolutionary army and all they can do against him is running away
Impel down in an awesome arc a lot of new and old characters return, seeing the first members of dragons army and way way more and i feel like boa hankock is under appreciated in this arc, she's the reason this all started.
The shadow ruby 2 She’s always unappreciated and seen as the weakest warlord. I think she’s one of the most badass women in One Piece, like before She got a crush on Luffy I really liked her, a lot, she seemed like a sheer badass, woman. But people fail to see that and that’s because she gets all soft around Luffy.
Chopper Senpai Read carefully, I said people see her like that, I actually think she’s pretty strong, and actually stronger than Jinbei, Buggy and Crocodile at the time.
I loved this review. Impel Down is one of my favourite Arcs but I feel like you didn't really do Bon Clay justice in this review. He was in my opinion the 2nd most important protagonist in this arc and the whole reason Luffy is even alive and able to escape. He puts his life on the line for Luffy time after time in this arc.
Impel Down is hands down one of my favorite arcs in the story.. I went into it completely expecting a shift of tone, a dark arc with little to no sense of adventure that we had in the previous arcs but boy was I wrong! I mean it had everything you could ask for! The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is why Buggy was imprisoned there when he was a minor pirate in the East Blue not even in the Grand Line.. couldn't they have just locked him up somewhere over there instead of going through the trouble of getting him into Impel Down? And did I mention that Magellan is a total badass!? Don't forget that Oda did say in an SBS that Magellan is practically a 4th Admiral in terms of purpose and strength. The guy is a complete animal and he definitely doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Buggy was caught in the Grand Line. He and Alvida followed Luffy there after Loguetown. He got imprisoned because he went treasure hunting in a cave that turned out to be a marine fortress, so he essentially invaded a marine stronghold. Straight to Impel Down with you, boy ;D
Since I found GrandLineReview (through the 101 series) I haven't gone on any other One Piece channel , simply because no other channel compares. Can't believe we are almost at the Paramount War! hype!
My favorite arc in the entire series. Having all these old characters back was a thrill, the prison itself was a really cool setting, and I love how it didn't really have a major villain, just antagonists. Blackbeard and Shiryuu were there, but Magellan, Hannybal, etc: they were all just guys doing their jobs. The scene of Hannybal calling Luffy out on his bullshit, man. It's got a lot of great moments and serves to build into the War like Jaya does to Skypiea, Davy Back Fight to Water 7, etc. It brings enough uniqueness to the table compared to other arcs.
I ended up writing a paper on Impel Down in college! We had to write about a Dantes inferno reference and well... Impel Down fits that bill so damn perfectly, especially since Marineford is basically going to Heaven in the next story, but assaulting it instead of going to visit.
As I've mentioned before Sabaody is my favorite arc in One Piece, but Impel Down is a very close second. I love the Dante's Circles of Hell influence of this place, the recurring characters, the story of Luffy being proven he isn't invincible continuing, and most of all it was an arc around Ace whom I've wanted back in the story for many episodes. The pacing was nice too. There were plenty of "Oh shit!" moments and they seemed to flow from chapter to chapter. I still constantly go back to that scene with Garp talking to Ace in his cell. Just bone chilling stuff. Much love for the Impel Down arc.
Impel Down is one of the arcs I simply go back just for the sake to its humor and somewhat dark atmosphere. It was funny and action based, with a lot of risk added in. Just the thought of being locked up in this hellish prison is enough to make me not to be a pirate in the One Piece world, and trust me, I would love to be one.
This is old, but yeah, bon clay survives, and one of the episodes actually shows him in a quick flashback. He has taken over the Newkama Land in place of Ivan
I personally love Ivankoff because of his/hers weird powers and personality. In today’s mainstream comics (Marvel) they put a gender neutral/trans character for diversity points, do nothing with them and then blame fans for poor sales. Just look at Captain Marvel, Riri Williams, Fake Thor, and Squirrel Girl for examples. Ivankoff, however, is silly and funny and bloody powerful. He/She has a personality, never makes a statement on PC culture, and is just cool to hang out around. Plus He/She helped luffy and trained Sanji. So that makes Ivankoff double cool.
impel down got me back into one piece, last saw episode on skypia where they beat satori and I didn't look at the series in years. Reading a shonen jump book and flip to one piece and see crocodile, buggy, Mr 3 and more old characters and I'm confused as hell. After watching the whole arc I remembered how good one piece can get
Welcome to The Grand Line review your source for anything and everything related to ignoring one of the most important characters of the arc, Bon Clay.
I enjoyed this arc, but can’t comprehend how 9 navy ships, all with the same target (the escaping ship with all the heroes) can’t seem to land one single cannon ball. Each ship had 3 cannons. That’s 27 cannons shooting off at rapid fire. Sometimes I think Oda is too forgiving
It’s definitely nice because it’s long enough that you start to really miss the straw hats but you also have the impel down crew. And then when you start to miss the straw hats even more, we’re thrust into Marineford and things just become batshit insane.
I didn’t initially plan to get addicted to grand line review but it happened. I don’t ever watch review channels But somehow I’ve watched every single video and actually subscribed.
The reason it never suffered from riots/prison breaks like that before is solely due to the setting. Think about it its in the calm belt. Tt requires hijacking a marine ship after dealing with Magellan and somehow surviving the calm belt. I don't think most people got the balls to take that risk.
The thing abowt Sengoku he confused me when he allowed luffy to get right next to him and start freeing ace on the platform before he tried to stop him
One of my favorite moments of this arc happens in Newkama Land. Where after Ivankov gives Luffy the Emporio Hormone and is locked in a room to heal. Bon-chan stands outside, continuously screaming "just hang on" to the point where he almost loses his voice. That, right there shows just how much of an inspirational figure Luffy can be for others
When you realize Empel Downs biggest weakness was it was designed to keep everyone in and through reputation of how hard it was to escape, they never really considered someone would break in, let alone someone strong enough, determined enough and could make enough allies along the way to break out.
"Consisting of 25 manga chapters and 27 anime episodes. A surprisingly close adaptation rate, actually." Accurate but it's just crazy to think that Arlong park was 2 chapters longer and 13 episodes shorter.
Magellan releasing Shiliew was mostly done to show just how desperate Impel Down's situation was. Plus, thinking that Shiliew, who happily slaughtered criminals on a whim before getting imprisoned for it, would slaughter even more in exchange for postponing his death sentence is actually a logical conclusion for a more moral person.
My all time favorite arc. It feels like it goes by in 30 seconds but each second actually takes 30 minutes to pass. But in a good way. The stress levels of this arc are fucking WILD.
The Shiryu thing is actually even worse because he was a condemned criminal scheduled for execution, and Magellan told him he was still a condemned criminal when he let him out. Which means he let him out and told him nope dude you’re still gonna die now help me with this riot I’ve already admitted I can’t handle by myself. Like really wtf did Magellan think would happen?
One of my fave arcs. I know what you mean about Buggy and Mr 3 - they grew on me in Impel Down. :) And Hannyabal made me laugh every time he appeared! :P
You're putting words in my mouth. I said that the same outfits become monotonous, which is an entirely valid criticism spawning from the selection of the setting.
This was the funniest arc in my opinion. So many comic relief characters. Buggy, Hannyabal, Ivankov, Mr.2, Mr.3, the Monsters running around saying things that they don't even know the meaning of. When Luffy first runs into Buggy and they don't realize each other until Buggy looks to his left and sees Luffy whilst running and completely loses his shit. Or when Luffy says he doesn't recall Buggy's Buggy bomb and Buggy starts running slower, downtrodden that Luffy didn't remember his all powerful signature move. Or when Mr. 2 first wakes up in level 5.5 and discovers Ivankov and he calls him "candy boy". Then he's like "no wait, your name is Mr. 2, Bon boy." Yo that was too funny lol. Great Arc all around.
Jesus christ, coming back to this after being with this channel for so long and listening to the difference is just hard 😅 It feels cringey, you've grown this chanel so much and honestly the fact that I can go back to one of your older videos, hear such a dramatic difference, and still enjoy it, is a testament to the work you've put into making the Grand Line Review the best source for one piece content.
I always thought Luffy Jimbei and Crocodile fighting together in Impel Down was Oda foreshadowing the strongest members of the Straw Hats that will be joining the crew in the New World.
I just finished reading this arc. Boy it was a amazing. Everything was entertaining and made the whole thing feel unique. With being a straw hat less crew really is cool to have so much depth to it
I think he released him with promise that Shiryu could redeem himself by helping him. It's not impossible, but very optimistic. And the only option he had left. What I wonder is why impel down didn't have an emergency system that temporarly floods all floors with saltwater ^^; Um... problem solved?
They didn’t put more people to look after the prisoners because nobody but Luffy is crazy enough to break into Impel Down. And prisoners on their own are completely unable to free themselves.
The entire arc is basically Magellan moving up and down through the prison and kicking everyone's asses.
There's two former warlords and a commander of the revolutionary army and all they can do against him is running away
Hell yeah, the kid taking out the whole crew still hurts my soul to this day
Two former warlords and one current warlord in Blackbeard
and a future Yonkou
Bon clay was as loyal as zoro and sanji to luffy, He sacrificed his life two times when he wasn't even with luffy much time
I think that it's nice that he was rewarded for his loyalty and sacrifice every time by getting to survive the ordeal. I hope he meets Luffy again.
You mean as loyal as zoro and brook?
@@walterfritzzz no, sanji
@@spicy915 brook is more loyal than sanji bruh, i think brook loyalness is one of the underrated things in shp
@@walterfritzzz true

Chopper Senpai Read carefully, I said people see her like that, I actually think she’s pretty strong, and actually stronger than Jinbei, Buggy and Crocodile at the time.
i never really liked her and i find her behaviour around luffy annoying af but she was worse before she met luffy so in short i dont really like her
Chris Jericho read carefully, I said LOL because people see her as being weak but in reality she is strong and I think that’s kinda Funny
I loved this review. Impel Down is one of my favourite Arcs but I feel like you didn't really do Bon Clay justice in this review. Son Goku I think he only got put at impel down for being in Rogers crew, I'm not to sure though
Now that you mention it I do remember such scene..! I need to reread One Piece lmao
Son Goku 0
Oda is a true master of his craft
I mean, Magellan is like an unexpected powerhouse who seems like he would be weak but is like able to take THE WHOLE BLACK BEARD PIRATE CREW
Only Luffy could be reckless enough to break into a prison just to rescue his brother. This also reminds me of prison break
Older brother gets rescued by younger
"Just"?

Nice!
Bro Bon was so good this arc. I loved him and no way I would of thought he died at the end. He was a true friend till the end.
Really nothing about Bon Clay?! He was my favorite part of the arc and had he escaped I would imagine he would have joined the Straw Hats.
As I've mentioned before Sabaody is my favorite arc in One Piece, but Impel Down is a very close second. That last episode of the arc was where real men cried...
R.I.P Bon -Chan
He's still alive ;D
Wait wot? That’s illegal
He got stabbed in the face by Magellan how he alive
Bearylee in manga he’s in charge of the section than Ivan was in
This is old, but yeah, bon clay survives, and one of the episodes actually shows him in a quick flashback. He has taken over the Newkama Land in place of Ivan
I personally love Ivankoff because of his/hers weird powers and personality. Not even name dropping bon Chan is a fucking crime
Bon Clay was the heart of this arc, he also was instrumental in getting Luffy to the 5.5th floor
How did you not talk about Bon-Chan?
My personal takeaway from this vid: everybody is luffy's mom
You are Luffy's mom
Simpleton S. Man j
Buggy is Luffys mom
Rawr X3 straight facts what could u expect from the future pirate king/queen
impel down got me back into one piece, last saw episode on skypia where they beat satori and I didn't look at the series in years.

Dude your arc breakdowns rock
Thanks :D
I always love those map things whenever they get separated. What are they called?
I enjoyed this arc, but can’t comprehend how 9 navy ships, all with the same target (the escaping ship with all the heroes) can’t seem to land one single cannon ball. Each ship had 3 cannons. That’s 27 cannons shooting off at rapid fire. Sometimes I think Oda is too forgiving

the scizzors man!, doflamingos single most hated enemy.
Ivankov is luffys dad and dragon is his mother
Pause at 1:32.
There's literally nothing going on I just love how dramatically Buggy is posing in the background.
It’s definitely nice because it’s long enough that you start to really miss the straw hats but you also have the impel down crew. And then when you start to miss the straw hats even more, we’re thrust into Marineford and things just become batshit insane.

Octupus Fishman Mink hybrid! One of a kind!

As a small sidenote, this was the arc where "awakened" devil fruits were first mentioned/introduced in the form of the 4 Demon Guards.
i just finished this part of the story it was awesome and Crocodile...PERFECT!!
It was pretty damn good~
My friends and I always referred to Magellan as a Resident Evil tyrant. You cant win, you can stun him at most, and all you do is RUN. love this guy.
How did he not talk about Crocodile or Bon Clay
I actually started one piece with the Impel down Arc back then, and now I'm obsessed. Magellan to this day is top 5 characters for me personally.
I like how Ivan says "mugiwara boy"
I thought the discord was Impel Down
Discord is level 7 of Impel Down.
Makes sense
I go back and forth on whether this or Enies Lobby is the best arc in the series
The reason it never suffered from riots/prison breaks like that before is solely due to the setting. Think about it its in the calm belt. Tt requires hijacking a marine ship after dealing with Magellan and somehow surviving the calm belt. I don't think most people got the balls to take that risk.
The thing abowt Sengoku he confused me when he allowed luffy to get right next to him and start freeing ace on the platform before he tried to stop him
Yo how bout a "Top 5 worst fillers in One Piece"? That would be great! Thanks dude >.
That's not a bad idea at all. I'll add it to the list!
Just follow it with a top 5 best fillers. I don’t like it when people think filler means something bad.
speedshoes29 Yeah just look at the Navarone arc. I love it!
speedshoes29 It’s not something bad, it just gets annoying. I’m not a fan of all of them at all, but they do help sometimes.
If he's doing worse hell have to find a way to do best, maybe.
One of my favorite moments of this arc happens in Newkama Land.
Where after Ivankov gives Luffy the Emporio Hormone and is locked in a room to heal. Bon-chan stands outside, continuously screaming "just hang on" to the point where he almost loses his voice.

Mr. 3 becomes a fan favorite here for sure. He was whatever during Alabasta saga, but he’s great here. And also saved the day like a dozen times.

My all time favorite arc. It feels like it goes by in 30 seconds but each second actually takes 30 minutes to pass. But in a good way. The stress levels of this arc are fucking WILD.

they were in a prison, i would think having the same outfit would be expected.
One of my fave arcs. I know what you mean about Buggy and Mr 3 - they grew on me in Impel Down. :) And Hannyabal made me laugh every time he appeared! :P
U expect prisoners in a prison to wear different outfits.
There is critism and then there is nonsense...
You're putting words in my mouth. I said that the same outfits become monotonous, which is an entirely valid criticism spawning from the selection of the setting.
Please tell me his lack of praise for THE GOAT BON CLAY was a joke?
The fact that this arc is basically the warden wiping his own ads with every named prisoner in thus arc was an interesting change of pace.
if you're going to ask me, I think this was the most Dark Arc because of the sheer amount of torture prisoners get here
This was the funniest arc in my opinion. So many comic relief characters. Buggy, Hannyabal, Ivankov, Mr.2, Mr.3, the Monsters running around saying things that they don't even know the meaning of. Finally, some respect for magelan
Sometimes I forget about how much of a badass boss Magellen is, then I go back to reread this arc and remember.
Don't fuck with Magellen.
One of your best vids ever.
What if luffy dose not have a mom and dragon saved some of his sperm then had ivonkov change his gender then impregnated himself
Well she don’t really know dragon had a son so probably not
Once Again thanks for this awesome video
I just finished reading this arc. Boy it was a amazing. Everything was entertaining and made the whole thing feel unique. With being a straw hat less crew really is cool to have so much depth to it
Yeah Magellan releasing shiryu has never made any sense till this day.
H e was desperate.
I think he released him with promise that Shiryu could redeem himself by helping him. It's not impossible, but very optimistic. And the only option he had left. What I wonder is why impel down didn't have an emergency system that temporarly floods all floors with saltwater ^^; Um... problem solved?
