I just realized that this interview was filmed beside the stage of a taping for Dick Clark's New Years Rockin' Eve 12/12/1993 at Disney's Pleasure Island, Orlando, Florida. My brother and I were there for the taping and got to see the band up close. They were great and saw no tension between Gene and Paul. They are very professional when on the stage. Great Era for Kiss.
I think Paul just got fed up of having to swallow so much of Gene's big ego and self-centered attitude for so many years, and a bit of his frustration just slipped out in this interview. I applaud Paul for this! :)
Agreed. Paul was the glue that kept that ship afloat. Always was and always will be the classiest member of the group. Gene’s at the bottom of that particular gene pool - probably one of the reasons for his constant need to overcompensate for attention and approval.

Yeah, but Paul made the most sense here. Gene wasn't taking it seriously and I think Paul actually wanted to seem deeper for a change. Keep in mind, this was 1993. The music landscape had begun to really shift toward more serious, thoughtful rock music. Bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam were outselling Kiss big time, and I think Paul wanted to start taking the music and the interviews more seriously like those guys were. Gene, on the other hand, was still living in the 80s and the party lifestyle, which had fallen out of favor at that time.
Re-watched the "tension" bit, and it's amazing that BOTH of them are Real Men about it. Gene doesn't take shit--and tells Paul so--and Paul refuses to demean himself by even arguing about it; though you can see his face get squirmy, he doesn't succumb to petulance and just keeps saying, "Go on." Phew! That's disturbing how far above us Puny Humans these guys are. I think Paul has heard Gene's "baby" story 100 times too often...
Nobody’s perfect. The fact they have maintained their partnership for so long is admirable and shows they both have good communication skills, considering their personalities are pretty different
As much as Paul can be a whiney dick and he certainly can be one.....he always tried hard to get Kiss some respect from their peers. As most of us know Kiss took and still take alot of shit from people who don't like their music. Paul deep down wants to be taken seriously as an artist. In some respects maybe Gene did too....but he got caught up big-time in the whole rockstar womanizer thing. Which can get old really fast as you can see in Paul's face here.

I actually liked all the answers Paul gave here. I like that he really gave some credit to other bands, especially going back to the real start of Rock N Roll, which is The Blues. Elvis and The Beatles were of course influences, but guys like Muddy Waters influenced ALL of them.
As much as I hate awkwardness, it's so great to watch these two ultra-narcissists turn against eachother for ONCE. Props to Paul for calling bullshit, though.. I wonder what kind of rock star/person he could've been if he didn't have to deal with Gene (I know, I know, there would be no Kiss without Gene).

Paul's always believed in the group and the love of the music and the support of the fans, and Gene's been more concerned about the group's image and having his own fun in between. There were times when a collision had to occur in order to clear the air.

seems like it's that way for a lot of older bands like Kiss, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd....they play together because it's business and makes them money, but they don't hang out after the shows and when they aren't on tour.
Frank Patek I remember seeing them in Toronto and they had sound and lighting issues I think it was the 3rd show on the tour . Wow! The tension was palpable. They never looked at each other, except for when Gene chastised Paul for undermining him. NEVER seen this side of their relationship before, and I've seen TONS of interviews, backstage stuff, etc. Just goes to show how carefully their media has been doctored over the years, never to have anything like this surface. But now it has and it does kinda give me a bad feeling in my guts.
I actually think they are really close. Even the closest friends fight from time to time who love each other. The biggest fights I've had were with my closest friends. I don't think they would have stayed together for 40+ years if they didn't care about each other.

Even though the money must be tempting, I can see why Ace would rather do his solo gigs. Gene & Paul are the most alike in personality, but Ace and Paul were there own people which gave the band character, but that couldn’t survive in this environment. All the old interviews with Ace were fun and exciting. But the stage did not allow for more. I’m sure the ones after got paid way less and had to shut up and tow the line.
When I initially watched the interview I thought Gene took it out of context when Paul said, 'Any idiot can get laid on tour'. I may have to watch it again and see if I was right. I just think Gene read into that too much and took it personally.
I think what Gene was more angry about was being personally insulted in front of people and on camera. Doubt it would have been an issue if Paul waited until the cameras were off in making his point.
I have never understood what people mean when they something like 200,000 coming to your concert is humbling. Or being named MVP or winning an oscar. How in the world is that humbling? I guess I’ll never know

I’ve always preferred when interviewees answer questions off camera rather than breaking the 4th wall. Feels more intimate, looks more professional and I genuinely believe people pay more attention to what is being said.

This is from Dec 1993. Kiss did not tour this year. They were reduced to club appearances to promote their Home Video release that year.

When I initially watched the interview I thought Gene took it out of context when Paul said, 'Any idiot can get laid on tour'. I may have to watch it again and see if I was right. I just think Gene read into that too much and took it personally.

I’ve always preferred when interviewees answer questions off camera rather than breaking the 4th wall. Feels more intimate, looks more professional and I genuinely believe people pay more attention to what is being said.
