In my humble opinion.....one of Men At Work's best songs.
My son John passed away at the start of 2020, aged 37. This song reminds me of him and some of his life. We sometimes called him Johnny, which he liked.

A good example when was the last time you heard "Batdance" by Prince on the radio? A number 1 song for Prince. You will hear 1999, Let's go crazy, Little Red Corvette and When Doves cry instead

I understand somewhat with something similar. Every time I hear it I think of the time I heard it on the radio in my 69 mustang driving into Austin tx from fort hood as the sun was setting in spring of 83 I believe. A beautiful memory. Maybe not as grand as your adventure. But happy indeed.

Men at work are one of the best bands to come out of Australia. Underrated and brings back a lot of good memories for me. If snowflakes don’t like it stiff sht,no one’s forcing you to listen are they. Colin hay is a multitalented musician,better than the garbage plastic music that’s being made on a computer these days.

Brilliant band and song
Found this in my dad's records, bought it in 1982 when he was 28. Spun the vinyl even though I was into metal and transfixed by the whole package. What an album. Loved that Colin Hay is linked to Scotland too. RIP Dad. Down By the Sea and all numbers on this relax you right out.

That's exactly my take on the song.I think most people don't get how serious it is because it's so lighthearted,but if you listen to the lyrics and watch the part of the video with Colin as the father kicking the ball against the wall and grabbing Johnny's arm, you gather that he was an abused kid and that explains his seemingly bratty behavior in the beginning of the vid.Good call!

Great band. Short in life, but the quality of the music was outstanding.
God I loved these guys back in the early 80s. Their songs were great, and their videos were creative and full of iconic moments, including in this one where they all come out in matching tuxedos at 2:34 and of course when Colin starts doing that dancing at 2:49. I saw those shots on a bunch of MTV commercials, along with the lazy eye closeups on "Who Can It be Now?" Just a great band!
I love this guys voice it’s so unique. Great song, never get sick of listening and often come to listen to cheer myself up. Funnily I have a friend called Johnny who plays the fool and his antics always remind me of this song.

I had forgotten how much I love this band! Every album is a masterpiece! I was in first grade when they were popular in the early 80s and this was my favorite song. It was truly captivating! Me and my brother were so into their music. I forgot how listening to them helped me forget my troubles!

One of the best songs from the '80's. I'd forgotten about this song until my son started watching Supernanny. I was like oh shit! Men At Work 😂. I feel the song didn't receive enough airplay. 😭 I don't know why so many people say Men At Work were underrated. They had like 2 or 3 #1 songs in the early '80's. Down Under went to #1 in the Spring of 1983!!
