I received laptop from my client with same problem. I thought I had no solution until I saw this video. AMAZING?? The power button is soldered on the motherboard. I tested it and found it well. I remembered to do as I do with the garage remotes controls. I washed the plate around the button with the KONTAK PCC spay and luckily it worked. Now it works perfectly!! In my experience with repairs, I know that, with apparent large anomalies, it may only need a small repair. Tanks for this channel and for the inspiration given. Be happy
For the power button the other end of faults can happen too: Corrosion happened inside and the button doesn't register anymore. This can happen over time especially on power button as every time the 3.3V touches the ground, there's a tiny spark inside the power button and it oxidises just like that. Also fixed with alcohol, petrol or contact cleaner. For me I like to spray contact cleaner inside and mash the button 2 dozen times and see if it works before I take the hassle and disassemble the button
Hi Sorin. Your videos and knowledge sharing are very precious as usual. Yesterday, I exactly had the same issue with my MSI gaming laptop. When I press the power button, power light comes on, and then it goes off. Nothing on the screen. I started to sweat while pressing the power button again and again. Last time, I pressed the power button for about 30 seconds for resetting bios according to MSI instruction. Thank god! The power light blinked twice and it came back to life again. I will never have such a relief moment in my life again. What a bit of luck? I always watching every video that you post and they contribute a lot of knowledge and logics about IT products. Thanks for your warm explanation!
I knew it was the power button, it happened to my surface pro 4, its tricky really. Its your old video about the power button issue that made me realize i have the same issue. Thanks for your videos Maestro.
Hey Sorin, thanks for showing another problem area. I'd never think that a button would short the whole computer. This was very helpful. Have a nice day kind sir.
Thanks for sharing this Sorin! I repaired a laptop with a similar failure once. It had liquid damage under the power button ribbon cable and some damage on the connector (power button board side). Cleaning the connector and replacing the ribbon cable solved the issue. With faults like this its always best to eliminate what you can buy unplugging things - LCD, USB boards, hard drive, etc..
My sister just gave me a similar Toshiba laptop and it behave exactly the same. She said she just replaced the cmos battery. I was hoping it was the power button like this case but it end up to be her laptop battery that is causing the surge. Boot up and run fine when the battery is removed and run on AC power.
You are trully the best idol Sorin! You're not human. You are Cyborg. LOL. Thank you. No one on this planet will ever share something like that. Youre the best teacher this world has to offer.
Clever way of cleaning it in case you don't have a replacement. Usually if possible I change those buttons because they're not expensive and if you are having atypical one you can extract one without damaging from the donor. In case of power buttons I am the type that praises changing them instead of trying to fix them. Reason is - depending on the user but most of the cases of failed switches I had where buttons with diaphragm that either lost it's sping force or was almost completely flattened out so cleaning it would make small diffrence there. I can give you fan fact here - Dell, lenovo, asus. In some models you can encounter surface mounted switches without casing, only thin kapton alike cover glued on 4 sides to the plastic. Well I had one Y540 Legion. The kapton part fell off and diaphragm went flying on the MB which caused shorts and extensive damage. Sometimes easy things are obvious, sometimes they're tricky and sometimes they bring pain and suffering but... You never know.
haha . this issue was my nightmare. I have fix many laptops and few of them that i didn't fix had this issue. Probably that was the reason. Thank you so much.
Ahhahaahaha that smile in the end 😂 as always, Master Sorin repairs are unique! 😁

Thanks for the info about short circuiting power button pins not going to do harm to laptop. life saver. mine sparked but didn't work first time bc lid was closed i guess. do not forget to open lid not just look at the fans.
Cleaning the inside of the start up button is all it needed and it didn't look dirty - just dust - wow - replace it for 10 cents +- or fix it by cleaning the inside - wow
Varistors are used to protect a circuit from high voltage surges. When a high voltage surge is applied to a circuit, the outcome is usually catastrophic to the circuit. A capacitor may be installed across the signal lines.
Nice work! I have this same problem, Acer Aspire 5755, but not sure if its the power button like in this video i will use same method to start it and see if it boots without power button.
thank you very much sir.. this button makes me ill.. maybe the user had pushed very hard so the thin plastic ribbon broken.. you clear me and save my time.. best lesson..
I love watching how you diagnose laptop...i want to learn more from you, but i have a question, i usually see you touching the board, dont you get shocked? Cause even though my laptop is powered off witg the avr, i still get shocked.
Nice video. What about if it is most times continueously retrıies and comes on and off. But on battary no problem, normal start. Thanks for your reply.
Tricky indeed, i had this issue on my old dvd drive the tactile push buttons switch fail because of bad contact i prefer to scratch that tiny piece carefully without damaging its shape and in the inside too then clean everything with alcohol and avoid using too much flux when soldering them it goes inside and it sticks there some are easily fixable and some not
Anyone taking that button apart to clean it, just to let you know it is difficult to put back together, because the lips on the side of the top of the button can easly bend.👍
Thank you so much, my oem keyboard was liquid damaged(power button on them). I replaced with china one like 2 week later suddenly shutdown and not started. I check any shorts on board and charging port to battery line everything was right. I'm was confused. But now i tested again without keyboard. It's started and not turned off. İt works :D
Voltage feedback failure. You can tell a lot about what's wrong with a power supply in the first 10 seconds that you power it on. The power could be good, but the supply doesn't know it, so it shuts down after the boot circuit stops preventing a premature power failure.
hey Sorin, I have an HP Laptop that seems to just shut off when you move it, and has problems turning on, have you found anything similar? I believe it happens in both battery and charger and the problems extend even if the battery is not installed
Thanks Sorin. I like your videos very much. Especially your style. Actually I got interest in repairing laptops after watching your videos. I have a motherboard that develops bios, ram and core voltages after pressing the power button but then goes off and the power supplies. Main power rail remains present at the input. It tries to turn on two three times and then remains off. I have tried to turn on by shorting the pins to bypass the power button but no success. Any idea about the fault? Which area to check further please. Suggestions from the forum members are also welcome.
an clasic problem with the button and ribon . :) ,i can be allso the keyboard ,the wifi card rtc ....its god to unplug all ,it can be allso the lcd ....nice work .
Hello sir, i have same kind of problem, the charge light is on, when i press power button it turns on, fan runs and then its turns off.... can you help ...
Good day Sorin what is the brand name and model of the multimeter that you use please? looking forward to your reply. Thank you again for a good video.
I watched till 4:00 & yes it can can be ram, dead cpu or a short on vcore or ram but knowing it's a Toshiba my guess is an intermittent s/c or leaky power button as I have seen this behaviour before with them the power switches get crap in them & they turn off intermittently... I will continue to watch & see if I'm right but I suspect I am but will watch.
Nice, ! a solution is , once the laptop goes off, close your door so it cannot come in ;) Not same fault as on TV's that are cycling on starup because of their "bios" chipset not accepting any more writings or have too much errors( and they are writen at all time on, attaining a limit of correct functionning too early) ? Where is plugged the amperemeter I cannot see, is it just because you alwayse use an external alimentation, not the original one ?)
