I first saw this documentary when I was a teenager. Thirty five years later the music still moves me just like it did then. The songs deserve voices such as Te Kanawa and Carreras. I went to Paris last year to see a touring production of WSS with my good lady. This music is very special.
Is there any male opera singer who can sing with this power and then switch to the most glorious soft notes and pianissimo better than Jose Carreras I don't think so.
@@tomlaw2707 I read a piece by one of the musicians who confirmed that several tenors were supposed to do this including Hadley and Domingo all of whom pulled out, one a matter of days before the recording session, Carreras at the eleventh hour stepped to save the project. He had no preparation time unlike the other cast members but he sang beautifully. No he can't hide his accent but he is wonderful. This was my introduction to opera and I have loved Carreras' voice since. I do like Hadley and it was so sad what happened to him
if you watch this whole recording, you see how frustrated Bernstein becomes with Carreras fear he just can't cut it...and some how, some way (some where?) Leonard coaxes it out of Jose...funny, touching, sad, poignant... and Kiri just keeps on cruisin'...
When I listen to Maria who is supposed to be pretty young, I hear a woman of 50! I like Kiri the Kanawa in full opera. It’s just not to my taste, although I liked Jose as Tony.

Jose and Dame Kiri exquisite together and alone, masterful in the true sense of the word!👏👍😀
This will last, Mr Bernstein, as long as there is beauty and truth in the world
Brutal. Carreras con su voz más joven y hermosa, Kanawa como siempre, una grande. Un guztazo oirlos.
It was never dated, it was always ahead of its time and still is. Its beautiful.
The best music documentary ever made, in my humble opinion!
Two fabulous opera singers singing together. Leonard Bernstein a great loss to the world of music.
Perfection! Kiri and Jose carreras together made the best duet.
Magistrales !!
Nadie como ellos cantando West Side Story.
Bernstein's comments are eternal: Yes! In his own words, this music has become "a classic"
This music will NEVER DIE !!
Que maravilha!
Beautiful .

WONDERFUL!!!!!
¡Bellísimo!
キリテカナワさんは2015年にアリオスのS席で歌を聞きました。ホセカレーラスさんに至っては2017年のアリオスで後ろに立って歌わせて頂きました。ピアニストの方とも握手して花束を渡させて頂きました。いい思い出です。
Can something be be so lovely wonderful....as this song....
To all....my Love ❤️💛🌠🌙✨
Carreras e Te Kanawa... Uhhhhhh!!!!!!

Psychologically it is really hard to have the composer as the conductor because he*she is the person who knows the music best.
Painful to watch. I lost respect for Bernstein.
Beautiful!

Free your mind and just love the music, for music’s sake! 👏👍😀
The audio wasn't well-balanced; Carreras's voice was more prominent than Te Kanawa's. Maybe it's just in the documentary, and not on the CD?
Qué mal lo pasó Carreras en esos ensayos...
Carreras tenía una voz ideal para musicales. Para ópera ya era otra cosa.
The most miscast Tony and Maria ever
Desmond P T What a dreadful man you are - insulting Jose and Kiri. Disgusting creature!
SugarTomAppleRoger Nothing wrong with not liking a performance, it's all a matter of taste.
I guess that he hasn't any.
Desmond P T I disagree. I believe that at least vocally they are the best-cast Tony and María ever.
Leonard Bernstein wanted to hear Maria and Tony like Mimi and Rudolpho in "La Boheme"!!!!!
