Those making comments about why they had to "speak" softly on the balcony but their "loud singing" was not heard by others are missing one of the basic expressions of musical theater (which is an outgrowth of the European opera). How modern and ingenious this film is, music, songs and dances, as if it were a day ago. This is the magic of the 60s, the best years of Mankind after the terrible war, when people understood the value of Life and Love. Amazing film and music that is not possible to repeat. Born in 1962, I carried the love of this film and music all my life.

Thank you Marni Nixon. RIP Margaret Nixon McEathron (February 22, 1930 - July 24, 2016), known professionally as Marni Nixon, was an American soprano and ghost singer for featured actresses in movie musicals. She is now recognized as the singing voice of leading actresses on the soundtracks of several musicals, including Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story, and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, although her roles were concealed from audiences when the films were released.[1] Several of the songs she dubbed appeared on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs list.[2]

My music teacher showed this to us in school, I am now rewatching it, love it
OMG! I do remember how this Movie effected everyone in the Sixties! It was like Magic across the Giant Screen in the Theaters! I Loved every Minute of it! ♥️♥️♥️🌷💐🌷🥰🥰🥰
Rip Stephen Sondheim. You are immortalized through your beautiful lyrics 🎵 💔
And Leonard Bernstein, for creating that beautiful music,
I still love this musical
My Choir Teacher: Did you know that Natalie Wood lip syncs in this movie?
Me: oh
(YEARS LATER)
Wikipedia: Did you know that Tony lip syncs in this movie?
Me: *WHAT*
I know who sang for Maria but I'll have to look up who sang for Tony
WAIT WHAT
Jimmy Bryant, if I remember correctly
As a Italian/ Irish American growing up on the Borderline of East New York Brooklyn / ozone park Queens I lived the real life story of tony n maria in the 70s only this Tony survived west side story/ Best Movie Ever
From the first time I saw this musical to the 1000th time since, the songs and music are forever being wonderfully sewn into the tapestry of my heart ❤
Thank the Lord for my grandma who exposed me to beautiful music like this since I was a child. 31 and still listening. RIP grandma. 💖
I'm so sorry!!!😢
Natalie Wood...what a beauty!🤗✨
I’ve only seen her in this movie and Miracle on 34th Street
@@manuelorozco7760 You should watch “ Rebel Without a Cause” with Natalie and James Dean. Great movie
Also born in 1962 and have loved this musical from the first time watching it as a little girl.. everything about it: it’s just mesmerizing
Marnie Nixon has such a beautiful soprano voice.
My mom sang the song " Tonight" at my wedding in July 1985 . One of my favorite songs. Still married as of 12 31 2023
My G-d, Sondheim was brilliant... May his memory endure as as blessing forever. Omayn.
In memory Stephen Sondheim (1926-2021)
Just a joy to listen to these words and music. Always magical.
This is too beautiful. My favorite scene.
I love classic West side story and the new one.
There are so many great musicals but I would rank this 1961 masterpiece the GOAT!
Lyrics:
Only you, you're the only thing I'll see forever
In my eyes in my words and in everything I do
Nothing else but you
Ever
And there's nothing for me but Maria
Every sight that I see is Maria
Tony, Tony
Always you, every thought I'll ever know
Everywhere I go you'll be
All the world is only you and me
Tonight, tonight
It all began tonight
I saw you and the world went away
Tonight, tonight
There's only you tonight
What you are, what you do, what you say
Today, all day I had the feeling
A miracle would happen
I know now I was right
For here you are
And what was just a world is a star
Tonight
Tonight, tonight
The world is full of light
With suns and moons all over the place
Tonight, tonight
The world is wild and bright
Going mad
Shooting sparks into space
Today, the world was just an address
A place for me to live in
No better than all right
But here you are
And what was just a world is a star
Tonight
Good night, good night
Sleep well and when you dream
Dream of me
Tonight
Maria's parents must have gone temporarily deaf if they couldn't hear them singing.
Hahahahha lmao
White guy: I'm not afraid
Latinas: oh you don't wanna see...*the slipper*
Was that a Coco reference?
Love how soft they both did "Tonight, tonight" at 3:05 gives me goosebumps, the remake didn't have the goosebumps moment. Voice-wise different techniques change, Rachel's voice is nice and smooth but again because that's the contemporary it's how most do it now.
As one who works in a Latino parish, this touches me at the core. The Latino youth know how to love the Lord and continue to believe in romantic love.
AMEN!
Only musical I actually can sit through and enjoy, love this musical/movie!!
Please give other musicals another try
Cena digna de Romeu e Julieta e música maravilhosa. Resultado: dez (ou onze) oscars.
Love this soong. My violin teacher suggested it to me as a recital piece, I was so Happy 😭😭😭😭
So beautiful film just like a dream ! Lovely song "Maria "
I love it when tony says “sí” and Maria has a delayed reaction about 4 seconds after he says it
Why the hell did I expected them to sing
Suddenly Seymour?
LOL
ladies when was the last time a handsome young man like that showed up at your window?
Cute
never
i live in a high rise building
Well, there was this window cleaner on the 93rd floor and then the rope snapped .....
I was 14yo! Nothing happened but it was flattering.
This musical was one of my moms favorite. She loved the singing and was a big fan of Rita Moreno.
Maria: Quiet
Tony: **continues yelling loudly**
I love romance.
I'm 18 years old and i love it
I’m 14 and I love it too! Natalie Wood will always be my favourite
Beautiful and elegant this Maria and Tony! I love the song :)
The emotional nostalgia of seeing this scene again 34 years on since l performed it is almost too much...
Maria: You must stay quiet. It will wake up my parents..
Prooceeds to do a duet loooool. LOVE this movie!! ughh
True classic. This never gets old!
I can’t wait to see Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler sing Tonight in the remake. They’re gonna bring justice to this song.
When is that supposed to come out?
@@footyfan101ful December of this year
Is Ansel singing himself?
Steven Spielberg hired a vocal coach for his version so we should expect ABSOLUTELY NO DUBBING!
UGH. Chick flick.
"...Tony? What does 'Tony' stand for?"
"Atone.
"Te adoro, Antone."
"...Te adoro, Maria."
;-;
Natalie Wood so beautiful seems like a Goddess, I love all the movies I star in, she was perfect, it is a pity that she died so young, there will never ever be someone like her, she was unrepeatable and unique.💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Auditioning for West Side Story with the scene and song. So nervous.
MsFuturestar001 good luck!
Nonaya Buisness Thanks, it was 3 years ago and i didnt get in but have gone on to perform in other shows x
Congratulations! A while back, but I'm so pleased you got those wonderful opportunities.
Same
“And what was just a world is a star” WORLDSTAR
Maria and Tony are a very good couple
***** really? Why?
+Bubblybradley technically it's questions
+Laura Bos because apparently Natalie wood was a drama queen and she thought Richard Beymer was not a good enough dancer and singer
Eugenia EasilyObsess really? oh wow.
thanks for answering!
Laura Bos no prob. apparently I'm getting judged by someone named bookworm cause I'm telling the truth
This will always be my favorite musical of all time. Then My Fair Lady...
It's Audrey Hepburn & Rex Harrison
2:05 oh, it's such a delicate and reverent moment when he kisses her hand
Watching the Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Will: Carlton if you get in the car right now I promise we can sing the theme to Westside Story you can be Maria 😂😂😂😂
The only regret I have is, why the "good night, good night sleep well and when you dream, dream of me" part is cut out?
I just saw the the 2021 trailer and decided it was time to revisit this masterpice
i always loved Bernsteins music, he was a real good composer and musician too! Natalie did not sang in this movie, but she was an good actress who died too young... May Natalie and Leo rest in peace
"Be quiet, my parents will hear you!" *starts singing a duet at full voice 😂

Maria and Tony singing st the top of their lungs with full orchestra. That won't wake papa. Well it is a musical.😂❤
I'm a 30 year old man, tatted up, welder and I cry every single time
That's okay. I cry every time I watch this movie.
I think I saw you in the Village People.
Only you, you're the only thing I'll see forever
In my eyes in my words and in everything I do
Nothing else but you
Ever
TONY
And there's nothing for me but Maria
Every sight that I see is Maria
MARIA
Tony, Tony
TONY
Always you, every thought I'll ever know
Everywhere I go you'll be

TONY & MARIA
For here you are
And what was just a world is a star

Sleep well and when you dream

Tonight

Richard Beymer is such a wholesome and lovable Tony … it makes so much sense why Maria falls for him in this version. Ansel Elgort, on the other hand, just plays Tony as an absolute creep.
Original is good, but Remake is okay
Both of them are so very beautiful ❤
Funny thing is, they don't even kiss and I still feel the feeeeeelllsssss
