Land Rover Series 1 Brakes Binding Investigation

- After the check at A&T Motors we knew there was a binding issue of some sort. The suggestion was brakes and for sure that is what I was hoping for! I do not fancy taking the gearbox or diff's out again! In this episode we get the 80" up in the air and investigate the issue.
Thanks to James Krassnitzer (I try to pronounce your name, probably badly!) and Liam Morris for their suggestions on what to look for, this Episode was filmed before your comments, but they are something I intend to look into.
The springs in the wheel cylinders are too strong so they push the trailing shoe out, so when you rotate the wheel backwards it pulls the shoe on.The Delfi cylinders in particular do this. I work at a Landrover specialist in Yorkshire and we've seen this many times now, fitting new pull off springs sometimes helps, we also put some weaker springs in the cylinders as well. Those modern bonded brake shoes also are rubbish and take for ever to bed in resulting in spongy pedal feel, they're more suited to servo brakes where the greater pedal pressure beds them in quicker.
Thank you for the comment, this makes a lot of sense. For now I may just adjust as best as possible and use it a lot see what happens. I will see what I can find out about weaker springs in the cylinders and stronger shoe springs. Interesting that it is three out of four that do this, but then I am used to things that do not always make sense!
I've got the exact problem, thanks for the tutorial cheers, 👍
You are welcome and thank you for watching.
I had the same problem on my front near side. Where it would lock up on reverse. It turned out to be warped drums.
Could be the case here, although I did measure them. I had a deflection meter, put the drums on backwards so I could then put the meter on the inside of the drum.
However, it is still a good call and if it had carried on, the plan was to buy new drums.
Your top brake spring shouldn’t be fixed to the hole in the brake shoe it should mount to a post that fits onto the back of the shoe, that same post is the post that the snail adjuster sits on... Hope this also helps as it prevents the spring pulling the shoe wrong!
Thank you for the pointer, I have to take them all apart again so I will check to see. Is there a groove in the post that the spring sits in? I should be able to take a look tomorrow, again thanks for the tip!
@@hyphensclassics yes on the back of the leading edge shoe i believe there is a post that the snail sits on and on that same post there is a groove that the top spring sits in.
@@hyphensclassics do you have an instagram account i can message you some pictures of mine on
@@tenxyou5547 Hu, yes I do it is Hyphens Classics. Thank you on the tip about the red springs, I have gone in and changed them all just yesterday, filmed for a later episode!
I have a similar issue with my 2a. I changed the brake cylinders, shoes and springs, the diff rotated fine. As soon as I bled the brake system, all of them are binding and some are stuck solid. Did you find out what was wrong with yours?
Yes and no! I did shave more of the leading and trialing edge of the brake material, basically add an attack angle. I also changed the way the springs attach, I think I discussed in the video!?
I have the same trouble, new shoes drums springs, did you resolve the problemn ?
Yes and no! So the binding did go, but I never got the brakes as good as they should be. The car has been stored for a few months now and last time I drove it the rears where binding again. So it is going to need further investigation!
@@hyphensclassics trailing shoe seems a crap design, mine is a 1980 so they didn't improve it. will take some friction material off top end next, good luck from snowey
scotland.
@@jamesdolphin6714 agreed. I have tried removing material, tried different config s of the springs, checked the drum for runout! Not sure what to do next! Still one will try again.
Thank you and good luck to you also, one thing I miss, a good amount of snow!
Such an odd blog. Asking for comments then comes back with the statement that it’s all good now. However, the brains trust has provided a wealth of assistance in this matter. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Thank you for the comment. This does need a follow up video, but unfortunately other projects took over and I have not been back on the LR for quite a while.
While the binding did stop, the brakes are not great.
Yes there are great comments on this thread and I hope that they help others resolve their issues.
