    My Grandfather saw the Titanic. He shouted loudly to all within earshot "that ship is going to sink!". He was ignored. But he kept it up "Mark my words. That ship will sink on her maiden voyage!" Eventually, the ushers just threw him out of the theater. 😉

    If it helps, to be accurate you don't need to drill out all the holes as not every room was lit up or being used. Not sure which holes you would need to drill, I just know that Honor and Glory said it would be more accurate to not drill all the holes

    • @Jiskpirate
      @Jiskpirate 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      DemonWolf 1991 the Titanic was heavily underbooked, so not all cabins were lit, and it depends of course at which time of day your setting takes place, but for example the double portholes on d deck from the dining room should be off at night because after setting the table, the crew put the lights off there (so during the sinking they were off)

    • @tjfSIM
      @tjfSIM 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jiskpirate I suspect a great deal of the lights were out at the time she struck the iceberg. Many passengers had already gone to bed, and none of the restaurants were open. Imagine most modellers will be wanting to depict her as she was on a typical evening, much like the well known Ken Marschall paintings.

    It does seem odd that the hull portholes are not openings for glazing. That's going to be one heck of a job to drill all those out, and only one has to be the tiniest bit out to throw the whole lot.

    The model looks great but when I've unpacked it to check I've noticed some things that are missing. 2 life boats are missing, the boats that were swung out on the sides so the cranes also have to be adjusted to the ready to lower position. Also the wall of reading and writing roomthat is facing the 1st class grand staircase entrance on the side has no window, also the entrances on both sides of the grand staircase have no windows nor doors. So these would require extra work to cut the wall and make windows AND the frames... So far and hopefully these are the only missing things I've noticed.

      @@Titan52berg,Colin Johnston and vindicari Well I am not a Titanic fanatic and I have no intentions or interest in building it, but that does not stop me from watching others who do. I simply inferred, at least I thought there may be some fragility in the hull that may be supported by bulkheads given the flexibility of the sides of the the hull. Then I get piled on. The guy I mentioned, Nigel who I also follow (and is a competent builder in his own right) has his own build going on and noticed that "deficiency". It prompted me to let other modelers who may have concern about this probable issue to consider looking at how they may overcome it. If people choose not to ...what is the issue. Band wagon comment is BS so what if the guy wants to make few sheckles what is the problem. Snobs in this hobby as well it seems.

    Excellent Ted ! I have like many others been waiting for you to make a start on this bad boy. I just knew that you would want to customise it a bit more! Many of us are waiting for instructions on how to buy the up date kit but I guess the current situation has fouled the propellers of industry up a bit! Really interested in your approach on the lights. A lot of us are abandoning the awful funnel LED's straight away! Direct funnel lights did not actually exist anyway, they only added them for the movie! Had a thought about using Fibre optics for the Navigation lights as the ones provided are way too bright. However, I thought about still using the bulbs provided but putting them in masking boxes hidden down in the hull with a thin F Optic cable taking the light up to the bridge wings. Any exposed cable could be painted white. Another thought, using a slightly frosted plastic sheeting behind the portholes and windows would defuse the light a little and soften it too. Unlike today's modern cruise ships or liners the lighting would have been much more subtle to any passing iceberg! Looking forward to your next video! : )

      You have to remember that this is a museum-grade, huge and prestige kit that comes on the back of years of research and development, and involvement of historical groups and researchers, and is aimed at the seriously serious modelmakers.
      It's no different to a Range Rover costing £90K when a Kia Sportage costs £20K. You are paying for different things - the effort that has gone into the production, the quality of the kit, and the sheer amount of stuff you get in it - over 1200 parts, 7 frets of hundreds of photo etch parts, lighting, and more, all at a very high quality.
      For the same amount you could get 11 Tamiya 1/35 Panzer IV kits and the Titanic kit would still have more parts and give you more to do compared to all those combined. And being an advanced build, a skilled modeller would get much more enjoyment and sheer hobby from the Titanic kit. So think of it as not "a lot of money for one kit" but rather "a lot of kit all at the same time, all in one go".
      Also keep in mind that this sort of large, prestige kit is quite common nowadays (and they are often produced in much smaller numbers than regular mass-produced pile-it-high-and-sell-it-cheap kits) as they are aimed at the seriously hardcore - and the manufacturers have to make a profit. They might sell a million little basic £20 skill level 2 1/700 Titanic kits but only a few thousand of these big 1/200 boys - and this will have cost them a lot more to develop. The tool for the single-piece hull could be worth 100K+ just by itself. The research and design has taken years and is not just a team of guys churning out a basic model in CAD programmes within six months. So you are not just paying for the plastic in the box, you are paying for research, development, manufacture, design , marketing, packaging, distribution and a lot of other stuff.
      So, ultimately, it is normal for a kit like this to command such a price - and this is nothing compared to some SUPER prestige kits like Tamiya's 1/16 Abrams tank. You get what you pay for, and with this kit, you get a hell of a lot.
      Same reason Ferraris cost more than Fiestas :)
