The Underbase saga was well written with an individual story for each issue that all tied in together nicely. #47 gave us the Seacons, #48 revisiting Megatron for the first time in two years, #49 a short but dynamic Deception civil war and #50 a cosmically powered Starscream cleaning out the old products.

I feel like the Underbase could be worked into modern TF mythos by having it be the dark counterpart of Vector Sigma. Whereas Vector Sigma is the source of wisdom and knowledge archived by Cybertron's elders, the Underbase could be where the dark secrets and dirty parts of Cybertronian history that the elders were ashamed of and wanted buried and forgotten were hidden, cast away into space. That'd be a good reason for the Decepticons to want to seek it out and learn its mysteries.
I'd say those dark secrets could be weapons and others items of war that were considered so dangerous that they had to be sealed and kept away from everyone
So the Cosmically Powered Starscream was so powerful no one could offline him but himself and in fact he did? 😂 Congratulations on 5 years of The Basics! As a Transformers lover this is THE GREATEST thing to watch ❤️

Thank you, Chris, for highlighting my favourite TF comic panel of all time - Starscream addressing the Underbase: “Blind me with your awful light! Thrill me with your darkest secret! Fill me with your unholy power! Give yourself to me!!” Simple, powerful art and writing; I get cosmically-powered shivers every time (and I’ve the panel as my go-to desktop wallpaper 😁) I wish you many more years of the Basics.
OK I know that Transformers can be a bit inconsistent with death sometimes, but the fact that Megatron was able to bring Starscream back to life when there was nothing left of but a big clump of wires is straight up insane. Whichever medic it was that managed that task deserves a medal.
The TF Marvel comics universe was made at a time before modern TF concepts like sparks were invented. Back then, all you had to do to bring a fallen Transformer back to life was rebuild their body, put their brain back into their head, and bam. You've brought a dead guy back online.
He put Starscream in a Pretender shell. Pretender shells automatically heal the Transformer inside. That's also how Grimlock, Jazz and Bumblebee were brought back (in the same storyline)
In one IDW panel, Megatron tells Optimus that, after one memorable fight, his men had to shovel him into a CR. Then there’s Waspinator… It’s cast-protection, a well-known variation of plot-armour.
@@battleupsaber462 for not talk about the episode where Optimus became a Robot Croccodile As his Decapitated Head was still able to control all his body parts
It was Ratchet (whom Megs had kidnapped and who had dealt with Megs before in the comic), who then tried to destroy Megatron by teleporting the bombs Megs had left onboard the Ark to Megatron's base and tackled Megatron just as he dived back through the teleport gate as the bombs exploded, which led to the utterly horrifying fusion of the two.
Starscream was basically Thanos in The Underbase saga. It's bit funny though none of the other high ranked Decepticons never get change to wield such power. Though now I wonder would power of the Underbase been so great that it could have killed Unicron, seeing how Starscream had like portion of Underbases power and when Starscream had rest of that cosmic power, it destroyed Starscream. I just thought way Underbase could be brought in new TF fiction as backup database that almost eclipsed Vector Sigma and to avoid that, Underbase was launched to deep space.
The Transformers: The Movie: "We killed off almost all of your favorite characters in the span of 20 minutes." Cosmically Powered Starscream: "Hold my energon."
I've had a personal headcanon around the Underbase saga for decades. Starscream is pretty famous for having a unique spark. In the original cartoon he somehow survived being turned to slag and became a ghost. This even recurs in a few different versions of Transformers. The idea that the seekers are all clones of him and all have unique powers has been a thing as well. My theory (personal headcanon) is that the Underbase had such an impact in his spark that it echoed both through time (kinda making it predestined) and all universes, and his spark is always just indestructible in all versions. Megatron never dared kill him, because he knew (thanks to Shockwave) that he was indestructible, and would be more dangerous if he ever discovered it for himself. Killing him would literally show him he cannot die. His unique spark always leads to the other Seekers (through whatever chain of events transpire in a given universe) and their special powers are results in mutations of that spark. And it is all because the Marvel version found the Underbase. The Underbase is so powerful, it's effects ripple through time and universes.
This has been what "The Basics" has been leading up to, the source of a majority of Transformers Generation 1 characters being offlined in the G1 comics....the Cosmically Powered Starscream.

How this story hasn’t been adapted is beyond me. Not beat for beat but the Underbase could be the central focus of a multi-part episode or even a movie. An awesome send off for Starscream. Maybe when it overloads him the residual energy would lead into a Dead Universe based story. This, in my theory, how Season 4 of Transformers G1 cartoon could have ended, if it ends in 5 episodes as it should be instead of 3 episodes. The 2-part finale would be an animated adaptation of the Underbase Saga from the comics. And by the very end, both Autobots and Decepticons declare true peace for all Cybetronians, which would soon lead up to the events of Beast Wars.
Happy Birthday to the channel and to the Basics! This show has become a fixed parted of my weekends! Even if there isn’t a new one I will go back and watch a previous episode! Honestly would love to see The Underbase get reworked into being simliar to the OG DCAU version Amazo, a being that is pure golden light that has ascended from mere machine into outright godhood. Being unstoppable with the only thing stopping it from just destroying the world is that it isn't inheritly malicious nor evil. Just kinda minding its own business but if you cross it's path he'll swat you aside like an insignificant bug.

Great stuff Chris! I remember this story distinctly - the shocking death toll (though even as a kid I could guess what was behind it), the superb work Delbo and Co. did in depicting the Underbase and SuperCrankHeadStarscream, and Starscream as a real threat - a skillful manipulator, cold-blooded, utterly ruthless and viciously lethal. And congratulations on 5 years! Long may your cosmically powered reign of terror continue!

Happy anniversary! One of the first things that clued me in to the fact that the TF movies were made be people who had only skim-read key issues of the comic was that The Allspark was essentially the Underbase (mungled together with the Matrix, but named after the TF afterlife).. Even at its kookiest, Marvel is my preferred G1 style. And man, The Underbase Saga had STYLE.

Happy 5th anniversary!! This was a great running joke on the channel, and its great to know how the saga happened and its effects on the franchise.
Thank you for keeping interest in Transformers going and for teaching us all about the different aspects of the lore! Keep it coming!
I hope that in the future we get a Transformers cartoon which briefly gives us a Cosmically-Powered Starscream and makes it the MEME that defines the next generation of Transformers.
Congrats on 5 years, Chris! I've been watching The Basics since the very first episode, and man time sure does fly... not unlike a certain cosmically-powered so-and-so ;D
If I could ever find that Platinum G1 recolor of the Supreme Cybertron Starscream, I always thought it would be a good Underbased Starscream.
I have the biggest smile on my face right now and I don’t think it will go away anytime soon
I love this show! Can’t believe it’s been 5 years already, and I’m excited for the next 5!
Yes! I’ve been waiting for a “Know your Meme” on this specific running gag. While this isn’t exactly it, who better than straight from the maker himself!
To this day I still have issue #50 (now in a protective sleeve) because of how unique and terrorfying it was at the time reading it as a kid in the grocery store -- Here's Starscream wiping out EVERYONE you grew up reading /watching!! 😫
Finally this Starscream is covered fully in a way I can understand
Transformers #47 was my first comic and really is responsible for my love of reading today. This video took me back. Thanks for that.
Congrats on the Five year anniversary Chris, as a Life long Transformers Fan i am always happy to learn more about the Robots in Disguise, here's to another five years of great videos.
My son had a question that I never thought of. How do transformers perceive their surroundings while in alternate mode. Hes 12 and autistic we watch your videos when they come out. We enjoy our time together watching your videos, keep up the awesome job!
…and then Chris McFeely was off-lined by a Cosmically-powered Starscream
For real, though, happy 5th anniversary, Chris!
Happy 5th Anniversary to the "Basics". I've enjoyed every episode and look forward to hopefully at least five more years. As always great experience my friend. Best wishes !!!!
I am kind of amazed that he has been able to do this for five years without having to re do episodes with new information
Happy 5th Anniversary to TF The Basics and thanks for the information about the characters, history of the transformers and the lore of history of toys, comics, novel, cartoon and etc. Keep it up and I love transformers, and now, I'm huge fan of your TH-cam channel. I'm glad I subscribed to u. I'm a Transformers fan after all.
*double kill!*
*triple kill!*
*overkill!*
*killtrocity!*
*killamanjaro!*
*killionaire!*
This one made me ridiculously happy. Thank you for five AMAZING years.
Phew! For a second I thought this was this was the series finale! Great work thanks for all the videos!
May your channel never be offlined by a cosmically-powered Starscream.
I Wish There Were More Cosmically Powered Starscream
*Somewhere, in an alternate universe:*
“Chris’ TH-cam Channel ran for five years, until he was offlined by a cosmically powered Starscream.”
congratulations on 5 years of the basics!
Congrats on Five Years, McFeely! Here's to Many More!
Happy birthday to this series!
Hope to catch many more episodes!
The second issue of this story was my entry to the franchise and still one of my favourite Transformers stories. 🖤
Thanks for covering this. I stopped reading the comics around then when the comic went black and white so missed much of this.
Cosmic Starscream and the Power of the Underbase seems to be the Transformers' analog for Jean Grey and the Phoenix force.
…Starscream eventually joins a Club that cosplays like they're from the Victorian Era?
Underbase Saga in a nutshell: "Starscream's offlining him! Then he's going to offline me! Oh my, Primus!"
Happy 5th anniversary. Congrats my dude. Love it. Starscream goes all Dark Phoenix here.
I completely forgot about this whole storyline, but the moment I saw that image of Starscream from issue #50, it ALL came flooding back. Thanks for restoring my lost memories!
5 years?! Man that's crazy to think about. Thanks for providing us bots fans with such great info
Huh, it's interesting how close that original story is to the modern Allspark. Makes me wonder if Michael Bay was actually inspired by it.
Budiansky loved the 1st movie, I know that.
He quoted that the human/Transformer interactions reminded him of his stories he used to do.
I’ve been face-palming ever since Vector Sigma became a cube, was renamed the Allspark, got launched from Cybertron by OP and then changed to a handily-sized doo-dad which also then got linked to the art of Combination discovered by Shockwave.
Sacrilege! Those who created this total mishmash deserve to be offlined by a cosmically-powered Starscream!
@@clogs4956 Since when does it have anything to do with combiners? You mean the enigma of combination? If you can't even get that right you don't have any place to criticize the franchises lore
@@tracytron7162 I'm referring to the Combiner Wars, as Chris did, where there's the combination doo-dad standing in for the Underbase/Allspark doo-dad.
You have to admit that there's usually a doo-dad someone is chasing and/or misusing. Usually Stasrceam, although Bay didn't get round to that one.
CPS- Cosmically Powered Starcream
Bane of all cybertronians. Eliminator of pesky characters, plots, and loopholes. One of the hilarious and best terms used on this channel! Happy 5th Anniversary buddy!!!
I can't believe it's been five years already. Congrats on the great achievement & thanks for all the fantastic videos!
So guys we did it. We finally got a cosmically powered starscream episode!
I always wondered about this, because the library system I grew up with had those black and white uk titan g1 comics and I always mentioned or involved it. But all stories were post underbase
5 years. Wow. I've probably been watching for around 3 of those years and I love this channel.
I do like the unwritten rule across Transformers media that if there's an all powerful McGuffin, Starscream WILL end up absorbing it in someway.
Even if it isn't from Transformes but from a serie that crossover with Transformers he still able to absorb it
Like Mazingascream
This is it boys, this is the episode we’ve been waiting for!!!
This vid has been a long time coming given how this topic gets brought up in just about *every* vid😂 And Happy 5 years to the channel! keep up the good work
Just about any Transformer's continuity:
Megatron: *wants a thing*
Optimus Prime: *sends the thing to space*
*billions of lives and many planets suffer as a result*
And Megatron is the villain here?
The only time were it worked and no one suffered from it was animated but Optimus wasn't the one to do it
Congrats on 5 years man I was worried you’d eventually run out of topics but with this episode being about a comic story arc it opens up so many more episodes that could be done , like maybe an episode about what lead to megaton and ratchet getting fused together would make a great Halloween episode. as well as the remakes you spoke of at the end of this episode
