TPE Class 802 'Nova 1' - First Class Review (Newcastle to Liverpool)

  • Hello! Firstly, I must apologise for the month long gap in videos. This was to give me a bit of time to record and edit other videos planned previously. I now have plenty of content produced and even more waiting to be finished. This includes an international video, coming from France (and there's more where that came from).
    Anyway, this video features a ride on-board one of the new Nova 1 units for TransPennine Express. These trains are largely similar to the GWR IET and LNER Azuma trains, currently plying their way on long-distance services out of London Paddington and London Kings Cross respectively. The fleet for TPE is formed of 19x Class 802/2 in five car sets.
    I decided to try one of these out in First Class, from Newcastle to Liverpool Lime St, and see how they compare, and what subtle differences are offered in the TPE variant, to see what the future of TransPennine Express services will hold.

    I tend to see a lot of people grabbing the seats with no windows so they can sleep on Virgin's 390's, i guess they are useful to some people. Personally i love a good window and ive heard that the 397's (Nova 2) seating layout makes sure that all windows are lined up with seats, which is a big plus if true.

      It’s possibly because these trains are virtually similar to the ones in Japan (videos on TH-cam) I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these carriages could be put in one of the Japan trains and people not seeing much of a difference.
      First class is usually better - worse now trains are corridor free for current regs. It’s not really of benefit paying first class on some trains. In fact on Thameslink, some trains have had first class removed for more standard seating. - I don’t know about these but I have had good reports on first class and the trains over there.

    Interesting to see what they are like, compared to when I did one of the loco hauled trains from Lea Green into Manchester recently. I thought all the seats were the same across the fleets, but it seems they aren't! I wonder if they are waiting until all the new trains are in and then change the catering offer in First Class. I went to Glasgow a few years back with TPE and it was quite different then; much bigger offering, much more frequent drinks service, etc. One thing I have always found with TPE; the staff are brilliant.

      The seats are of the same woeful design, but the seat covering is slightly different, as far as I understand. Also, on the CAF trains, they look more stylish, but are they any better? Remains to be seen!

    My wife and I are travelling to Manchester from Newcastle at the end of October.
    We have not yet booked the outward journey, as no cheap tickets are available yet .. maybe as it will be on a Sunday. Funnily enough though, we booked our return journey, for the following Thursday several weeks ago.
    Hopefully , when cheaper tickets are released, they will be about £29 (standard) and £54 (first) for the two of us, with a railcard.
    We have never travelled first class before, so I was thinking about it this time, but after seeing your review, maybe it’s just not worth the extra. For some reason (obviously wrongly) I assumed first class passengers were ‘wined and dined’

    I've seen these coming through Leeds for a few weeks now. Thought it was another Azuma until I noticed the lack of yellow ends. I do think the blue interior is a bit nicer than the rather garish red in the LNER (standard) coaches. On the one hand I welcome their arrival because extra capacity on Transpennine is badly needed and has been for quite a while! On the other had it is very disappointing to see more of the same dreadful seats that have attracted such heavy criticism on the GWR and LNER sets. I find them to be totally unacceptable for a long distance train. The DFT / Hitachi really ought to listen to what customers are saying and act on it! Because its not like decently shaped and padded seats need cost any more but they are absolutely fundamental to the comfort of all passengers. Until this silly flaw is address all the IET sets are not fit for purpose IMO.

      @chriswilkes236 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you completely. The old 125 and 225s were much more comfortable, the seats were large, welcoming and capacious, and the food was fine. I'd love to see the companies use some money to provide welcoming, comfortable and spacious seating, rather than the damned ironing boards we have at the moment.

    I'd leave the text on a little longer and use slightly smaller type so as not to cover the image. These are beautiful new trains, but as with GWR and LNER, the seats are awful, and as you and others have said, they are very unwelcoming and uncomfortable. What a waste of an opportunity not to have a beautiful interior to match the exterior. The old seats were much more comfortable and welcoming. CHANGE THE SEATS!
    Colour scheme for the seats is nice. But how is it that all the new trains have so many systems that don't work. Surely they have been tested up and down. You are right about curtains. They would much nicer than the blinds! Four minutes late! Come on, first train of the day, and they're late. Poor catering. Decor is really industrial, like a factory, everything designed for efficiency, and nothing for comfort. The ugly, garish lights top it off.
    Beautiful shots of the early morning.
    A lemon muffin? That's it? How about a full English? No hot food. A missed opportunity for the franchise holder.
    You were very kind about the train. Really disappointing after all the money spent on the new train. Let's hope they will improve rapidly and listen to customers like you.

    I'm a regular between York and Leeds and been on these a few times , the extra capacity is nice but on the whole they have a poorly designed interior. This include small and insufficient luggage spaces , hard seats , plug sockets between the seats in standard ,and a faulty intercom that gives static and feedback. To finish off this mess they went to single doors instead of doubles as these are primarily a commuter service why make it harder to get on and off especially for people with bikes or using wheelchairs?
    To sum up nice exterior and then they went and ruined it with the cheap options for interior.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They aren't primarily a commuter service, they should be an intercity service. Most of the services these units run are in excess of 3 hours, longer than many LNER and Avanti services, who are definitely not commuter operators. The faulty intercom has been fixed now on most units. Plug sockets in between seats means the person in the aisle seat can use the plug without the wire trailing over the person in the window seat

  • @tonyp011

    the advantage of the yellow fronted trains is where there are unmanned level crossings such as ones that appear on country lanes or where a footpath goes across the line is that people crossing these lines can actually see the yellow fronts of the trains especially in poor visibility or weather conditions, and I think dark fronted trains are going to be more of a danger to people who have to cross these lines as they are not going to see these dark fronted trains as well as the yellow ones in the weather conditions ive mentioned, plus in bright sunlight might make them hard to spot and judge how long before that train reaches you, at least with the yellow frontage trains such timings can be judged as to whether you'll get across or not

    • @SuperalbsTravels

      I find it not to make any difference. I am always perfectly safe in countries where trains do not have yellow fronts.

    • @benjibatch
      @benjibatch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because the LED Headlights on these are so bright you’ll see the lights way before you see a yellow front... ESPECIALLY in low visibility...

    • @soundseeker63
      @soundseeker63 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The headlights on these units are almost blindingly bright! There is no way anybody could fail to see them coming even on very sunny days they still stand out. The yellow panel dates back to 1961 when most trains only had a pair of 40w bulbs behind their route indicator blinds so although it is something we are all long accustomed to it has been somewhat unnecessary for a while now.

    • @Garylpool1
      @Garylpool1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soundseeker63 I much prefer the yellow fronts to the blinding LED lights. These lights can get no brighter and cannot start to flash like strobe lights as this will affect people who have epilepsy and/or are photosensitive to very powerful lighting.

  • @tonyp011

    I do not like the 2-1 configuration seats in 1st class, so first class seems to have been made smaller, and I suppose thats because not many first class tickets get sold so they've reduced the seats, and if this is the case then watch all of a sudden first class sales will rocket then the train operators stuffed, huh first class passengers get some padding in their seats for comfort while second class passengers after long journeys are going to have very sore painful backsides and backs because there is no seat padding at least with the Pendolino trains although they need upgrading , the second class passengers get padded seats, and I hope when these train seats are upgraded they dont put the hard seats in that this train as, otherwise theres going to be a lot of medical complaints and people will get backed up by Orphopedic consultants and physiotherapists saying the train seats on new trains are causing more problems to people, plus these hard seats are going to make people who already have a back problem even worse

I found that the interior wasn't too bright I was travelling in the day not night so maybe it's just unbearable at night. If I had paid for a First Class seat, I would not want a bulkhead alongside me for the whole journey: who planned that? Mind you, what a difference when compared with the tired old rolling-stock of CrossCountry trains. Time for the latter to up-grade I think! I also tend to find these modern air-conditioned coaches a bit on the cool side. I wish they'd heat them to, say, 22 degrees. By the way, Huddersfield Station is one of the glories of England; a large Palladian classical building with two wings. Worth enjoying a pint and meal at THE HEAD OF STEAM, before boarding.

    Very good movie - nearly empty station cos too early yes, you're right but now nearly all stations are empty apart from peak times cos of coronavirus. Only key workers allowed into the train. Other times nearly all trains almost empty.
    I hope while the lockdown are easing more people will be allowed to travel on trains.
    I went to Liverpool to attend a deaf event in June 2017 from Southampton Airport near where I live in via Birmingham New Street. Liverpool Lime Street is a beautiful looking station and I noticed two statues of comedian Ken Dodd and his Labour MP friend near the exit. Rest in peace Ken Dodd.
    I slept in hotel by the station for two night before I returned home south to Southampton Airport.

      Hitachi has been able to crank them out like sausages. The base design being so similar across the four companies presently using them (GWR/TPE/LNER/HT) has allowed them to produce them faster. Plus three factories, compared to say, CAF or Bombardier.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, it's just Hitachi are able to provide a good quality product that meets customer's needs. They're able to produce them quickly to an already proven design (which is why Hull Trains got their first unit in service within about 6 weeks of delivery, compared with over a year for TPE's Mk5A sets). It also helps that with a design common with others it means that if the trains are replaced on one franchise, it's highly likely another franchise could take them on as a capacity enhancement

    I dont like where the door open/close button as been placed to me thats far to low and you could quite easily catch the person sitting there, also any kids travelling on these trains will find that very tempting to play with as we all know kids are very attracted to bright lights and anything they can push especially young ones as they know no better and some parents allow their kids to run up and down trains to stop boredom setting in on long journeys, and kids go wondering and parents not paying attention could soon lose track of their kids and with crime against kids on the increase the train builders or designers have not taken child safety into account, I can see these buttons forever being repaired and getting very sticky from young kids fingers, these buttons should have been put up out of the kids reach

    Doesn't matter how nice or comfortable they make the trains if they can't get you from A to B on time ! Not to mention the constant cancellation of trains because they don't have enough drivers! Sick to death of transpennine express! Will be glad to see the back of them some day soon I hope! The new time table which starts on the -15Th Dec ! From darlington to northallerton is beyond a joke ! Train at 19.17 then not an other one until 21.53. There is no other trains or buses running that way! No thought put into people who need to comute to and from work! Or kids who might be running late at darlington college that will need to get home! Or people who might be visiting relatives at the hospital who don't drive! What a useless company!

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point of these trains is to get from A to B on time. The only reason there's a lack of drivers is due to them being trained on the new trains. Getting rid of the current franchisee won't change anything, it might even make things worse. Timetables are generally dictated by the DfT and Network Rail, and it's worth noting that you can still get to Northallerton by changing at Thornaby
