Kawasaki sells globally. The US is not the only country on planet Earth. In some countries, bikes over 250cc are restricted and the 230 sm is an upgrade to the 155cc and lower motorbikes that many people are accustomed to.

Maybe a sumo 230 makes perfect sense because it would make a great commuting machine? I like dual sports as commuters because they are comfortable to ride, great on gas mileage, the long travel suspension makes speedbumps irrelevant, they are simple machines to maintain, and they are generally cheap machines to purchase and insure. If you're not a squid you don't need a torque monster. The only thing that I think sucks about commuting on a dual sport is the poor traction of knobby tires and the lack of street oriented tires for the traditional 21/18 inch wheel size. Only if they had 17 inch wheels..........

The klx230 is actually a really amazing dual sport bike. Anyone who has actually ridden it has been quite impressed compared to what they were expecting going in...the 230 holds it's own when ridden with other bikes out on the trails. The 2023 model as far as I can tell the only difference is the newer headlight and a slightly redesigned front fender, otherwise its the same bike as before, which said bike is a really great bike. Personally I am a fan of the older headlight, it gave the bike unique character IMO...in fact I hope to still find an SE version when I have the loot squared away in the next few months, as I'm a fan of both color options, the oriental blue and firecracker red versions, as well as the black spoked rims as opposed to the silver ones on the standard 230...so fingers crossed for me...but yeah for anyone who might be thinking about the bike, but is unsure due to it being a 230, IMO its the best of the Japanese dual sports 300cc or under. Kawa designed the engine and subsequently the bike, frame, aesthetic, et al. From scratch, to make the klx 230 its own line of bikes and they really nailed it with this one...imo of course.../blahg.

What us reviewers fail to realize is if you go to most Latin American countries (and I'm assuming Asian markets as well but have never been) half the vehicles on the roads are motorcycles and dirtbike / supermoto style small cc, they are cheap and work on shitty roads. That's a very different world then what we have in the states. US bike guys tend to look at motorcycles as toys to take on flat superhighways sometimes because 99.9% of US is using cars almost always. So the big 4 probably don't take US roads riders into account when looking at design choices.

The 230 series is popular in Asia where people are generally smaller in stature and don't ride the same as in the US. But there are a lot of people in the US who want a simple air cooled bike that goes fast enough but won't break the bank. The 230 series fits that. It's a great bike, no cooling system to worry about breaking. It's light and fast enough for most. So it makes perfect sense to me. Firstly, I think an off-road bike under 230cc should come with a kickstart even if it has electronic start. Secondly, WTF does HP have do do with traction control? Traction control is based on torque. I understand both torque and HP tend to increase relatively lineally but traction control is not related to HP. Any bike over 200cc can slip out the rear wheel from of a corner if you give it too much so a 650 sport bike with traction control seems perfectly reasonable. The market desperately needs a Japanese, freeway legal 150-175cc bike. It would then be legal for places like the White Rim Road, be lightweight for both riding and transport, and not a lot of money. Dual sports that were street legal used to be available in that cc range, but haven't been for years now. The focus is big stuff with 37" seats.

I"m not sure they can engineer a 175 that will happily do freeway speeds all day. For example my 400 doesn't really like anything over 65. I know they may have had them decades ago, but the speed limit was 55, now some states have 80 mph. I'm not sure a 175 will cut it anymore on the interstate.
      Cheers!

Don’t know about other countries but I know that here in Australia we didn’t a road legal version of the 300 platform because it didn’t come as standard with abs or something like that but we are now getting these 230’s, could be the reason why they’re offering it as a sm especially since the drz sm isn’t being sold here anymore

I bought a new dr650 in 2013. Loved that dualsport. Sold it. Regretted it. Looked forever it seems for a dualsport. Only dualsport available for 200 miles was a kawasaki klx230 at Fox motorsports. Bought it. Broke it in well. Good little dualsport. Peppy and truly all you need for riding country roads and off roads. Seat is hideous. I put risers on it which greatly improved it. Happen to be on marketplace. Found a VERY nice 2021 xr650l with Joe rocket riding gear, big gun exhaust. For 5500.00! Had to buy it. Still have klx230. Still love to ride it!! It doesn't have the grunt of the xr650l. But, anyone wanting a economical dualsport. The klx230 is all they truly need. Just my opinion. P.s. it has enough torque to pull hills great without the xr650l over torque wheel spin, get out from under you power! The xr650l will hurt you if your inexperienced. It's huge, very tall. I'm 6ft tall. And on tiptoes. The klx230 perfect to maneuver. I would put it up and over the tw200 any day. It's fuel injection.

no revision needed in Japan for 250cc and less bikes. reason becouse often Japanese bikers prefer to stay under 250cc. also insurance is cheaper. also, ppl usually follow speed limits, so it fits really well to Japanese audience. (I live in Japan and I will probably buy this KLX230SM. also because it's the last bike allowed because a new law on emissions is real now)

I'm not 100% sure if this true or not, but I've heard before that car/motorcycle manufacturers have to have an average fuel mileage rating accounting for all models they sell in the US. So introducing 2 230cc models that probably get 65-70 mpgs really helps that number.

The problem is here in Thailand they don't sell the 300. So it's an air cooled klx230 for like 153k or a liquid cooled CRF300 for 145k. Kind of a no brainer. I went to Kawi to try to buy a 300sm, no can do, only an air cooled POS in this market.

The 230 super moto does have its real market in ASEAN countries and alike. The KLX 300 is so less popular than CRF300L in many countries. So the 300-class is reigned by Honda while the 230 “air-cooled “ segment is wholeheartedly Kawasaki’s. So adding on a super moto to this segment is rightfully a good move for Kawasaki.

Been screaming for years that they should make a 450 dual-sport. Or, at least, a 400 dual-sport. I think most people that want a dual sport don't want anything in that 250-300 range anymore. Ideally, I'd want one with a lot of punch, that can easily hit 90-95. Anything less than that and it's just not worth buying, to me.
