I think Kirstin has always been a stellar vocalist, she was just more shy and didn't really want too much limelight. I think she didn't give herself enough credit when it came to her vocals. She grew up with Scott (power, confidence) and Mitch (ethereal, angelic, super awesome) so I think she thought they should be shining while she provided support. With age, I feel her confidence has grown so she feels in the same league as Mitch and Scott. She is showing us what she's got, that's for sure! I love it! Thank you for this reaction!

absolutely her confidence grew so much as well as her voice has developed and become better with age making her the amazing vocalist she is now!
Also, when she got cast in Kinky Boots(I *think* I remember reading this somewhere) she got a vocal coach, which she'd never done before. She learned how to really use that voice in an amazing way. Can't wait to see her in Children of Eden!

I was certain Mitch would go for that high note in this arrangement and when it was Kirstin I was SO HAPPY I've always loved the texture of her voice and always felt she got under-utilized after they were on the singing competition.
Fun fact time: Kirstin majored in musical theatre and was in a musical on Broadway in 2018 when she played Lauren in Kinky Boots. So a song like this is like made for Kirstin. And I agree they just let her do her thing and she went full pelt and I love it.
Kirstie had a mike drop moment there. Loved the smile when she knew she nailed it. Good job Kirstie.
If you couldn't tell, this was a LIVE performance, whch just makes it that much more impressive. The Kirstin-beast has been unleashed!
Are you sure? I thought so at first but a few of the camera cuts catch them in different positions. Like 7:05 'measure' is one of the more obvious ones, her head faces a completely different direction when they cut from the shot of Kirstin to the wide shot.
It wasn’t fully live, unfortunately
Mostly live. The vocal track was live with minimal post. The video component was pieced together from the best shots of a few takes (and obviously some extra video clips).
It’s pretty much how most “live” shows are produced.
@@winterhorses it was prerecorded so they will definitely use multiple takes and effects in post. Thats pretty much standard.
It’s not surprising that they wouldn’t do fully live for TV. They aren’t in full control and not the ultimate decision makers. Producers/director would want to play it safe.
This was Kirstin's chance to publicly prove what she's said before - she can sing just as high as Mitch.
In the early days of PTX, Kirstie was focused on Mitch. I think she thought of Pentatonix as "The Mitch Grassi Band," or something similar. For her, the *reason* they were going to L.A., appearing on _The Sing-Off,_ and attempting to win a recording contract was that they wanted to introduce the world to the incredible voice of Mitch. If Scott and Kevin and Avi got recognition as well, that was just so much icing on the cake. Yes, they deserved it, but the important thing was getting Mitch recognized, and maybe healing some of the pain he'd suffered from high school bullies. As far as her own voice was concerned, it was just one more tool she could use to back up Mitch.
I think that attitude toward her own talent began to change when she starred in _The Wizard of Ahhhs_ and the men in the group (including Mitch) were all so proud of her. Then when she got the role in _Kinky Boots,_ and aced it, that experience finally brought home to her just how talented *she* is, and that she, too, is worthy of respect, and admiration, and solos.
I also think that she wouldn't be such a good performer today if she hadn't discovered her own talents slowly. I think that her empathy for and admiration of Mitch has increased her ability to appreciate talent wherever she finds it, even in herself. And I could be totally wrong about that, but it feels right to me.
Agreed. Also with her own childhood and trauma she didn't have the confidence to go and get it the way that the others did, she was just grateful to be included.
So glad to see you cover this. When I first heard Kirstin drop that high note I SCREAMED!!! So glad to see her step up as a soloist.
Kirstie's confidence has grown so much over the years, I feel she's the one that has grown most of all of the other members, as a person and as a singer. She's really coming out of her shell recently. I feel like she really shines in "My Favourite Things", "Be My Eyes" (she wrote that song) and "Come Along" (I think in this one you really see her confidence coming through). Also in "Once Upon a December" from their last Christmas Album, although that one doesn't have a music video.

@@calebdell9937 No she often goes by Kirstie. On professional things after the first few years of PTX she goes by Kirstin, but when people talk about her and in informal settings she uses Kirstie. It's like Mitch doesn't go by Mitchell very often (only on the most professional of things).
Thank you for mentioning "Come Along". That song doesn't get enough attention and is an amazing display of their talents and very fun! I found an even bigger appreciation for them after I heard the original version. Pure genius PTX!

In the last chorus, Kirstie wasn’t improvising. Her break away from the melody of the chorus to those vocal liberties were part of the original arrangement from Seasons of Love in the Rent musical, sung by the soloist (ie Kirstie here), including the high note at the end! And she sung it flawlessly!! just an fyi :)
Scott’s run that she talks about at 1:57 ish is also exactly as written. In fact, the only time anyone really goes “off-script” is when Scott does the male solo, iirc.
Funnily enough, the RENT movie version of Seasons of Love had all these as well, even the male solo (which was covered by Collins).
Improvised section. As in the adlib section. Even if the ad libs are written, the section is still called the improvised section. Because it was improvised in the original. But go ahead with your semantics.
Thanks for pointing this out to everyone, I was a little confused that not many people realized she pulled it off identically. That's the best part of the song for me, and it is in fact deliberate and true to the musical.
It's always nice when Mitch can take a break and let us be reminded that there are two divas in this group.

There are stars (five, in my book), but no divas. To me 'Diva' includes connotations of attitude that I just don't see in any of the members of Pentatonix.
@@rudewalrus5636 It gets used in that way, for sure, though it started out referring to a celebrated female opera singer and continues to evolve from there. I don't think, when Beyonce gets called a pop diva, that they're talking about the spoilt-brat mentality that also gets contributed to the word. An interesting etymological shift, for sure.
Tara, the vocal arrangement that they did for Amazing Grace is incredible. You should definitely do a review of their rendition. With that said, another knock out by these guys. Great review by you too ;-)
What Kirstie is singing is primarily as it was sung in the original version of Rent. You might want to listen to the version from the 1996 Tonys.

I’ve been saying this for sooo long! I wonder why they haven’t put one together. Maybe it has something to do with getting the rights for songs. I know some composers won’t allow any real changes or adaptations of their songs. 🤷🏻♀️

Kirsten sang with voctave (for a second time) in their rendition of Show Yourself from Frozen 2. Highly recommend it (as well as many of the other songs from the Album)

A lot of the "improvising" you pointed out was actually in the movie version of Seasons of Love. That being said, of course they completely nailed it, truly amazing. 👏
For what it’s worth, they recorded this song with essentially the same arrangement for the Christmas album they put out last year. We were absolutely all shook by Kirstin’s performance at that point and I loved watching the live-ish performance here. I love her so so much and I’m glad you do too.

We've all been waiting for almost 3 months to see you react to their Capital 4th performance. You're right. It does seem as if they "unleashed" Kirsti on this one and just said go out there and belt.

Just a MAGNIFICENT performance!! They recorded a studio version of this song that appeared on their Christmas album last year. I was hoping they did the same arrangement in this live version. I watched the show that night (July 4th) and was literally shouting with joy when they did an even fuller version (with the choir) of the studio arrangement. Kirstie's time on Broadway has paid off in such a big way for her. I've been saying that they've let the genie out of the bottle and there's no way of putting her back in. She has been taking over this group and getting a LOT more leads, writing or co-writing a lot of the original songs (she got writing credit on half of the songs on their new all-original album), and has finally become the shining superstar she was always meant to be!
That was awesome.

If you haven’t reacted to Peter Hollens version with his wife Evynne you should. I liked what Pentatonix did, especially becoming more exposed on TV letting them be heard by literally millions of people. Word of mouth is great and how Pentatonix got to where they are now, but as a Pentaholic, I’d really like more people to be exposed to them. They really deserve everything. They have worked hard to get where they are now.💕💕💕🥰

Those two things aren't mutually exclusive. While alot of show was about folks LIVING with AIDS, the song itself is finding joy in the small things they DO have time for until it's their time. It's a bitter sweet song. So you're right but she's right too.

I actually think, could be wrong, but I think the lower riff you stopped to listen to was Mitch - his runs have a different quality to them than Scott's and he was singing lower than Scott quite a bit in this one, which I loved
