Great reaction! Every time I hear Kirstie hit those beautiful high notes, I get soppy. She doesn't often get to show just how amazing her voice is, and I'm so glad she did that. The closest I've heard is in PTX Rather Be, and in a few of her solo videos, like Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and when she sang the National Anthem by herself a capella at a baskeball game. I think that stint in Kinky Boots on Broadway a couple years ago really gave her the confidence to sing so powerfully, and it's wonderful to hear.
I honestly don't care if it was live, or not. It was an absolutely amazing job they did. It was awesome having Kirstie really feeling this, and just being an absolute Diva, in a good sense. She's. a great talent. Especially when she's cut loose, and does her fabulous female, beautiful voice parts.
Yes, this is from Rent. They did a studio cover of it on their Christmas album last year that didn't have an official video. This was a terrific live performance (albeit recorded in advance of the show). I LOVE any song that gives Kirstie a chance to shine...and boy does she here!! Talk about SOARING!! I'm now considering this to be their official video of Seasons of Love. I usually am not a fan of them adding choral backings in their songs (with just a couple of exceptions...O Come All Ye Faithful comes to mind immediately), but this choir was perfectly blended with them and worked amazingly well.
When I heard this on their Christmas album, I'll be honest, I wasn't sure if it was Kirstin or Mitch hitting the high note, lol! But she has such a powerhouse of a voice!! I just love this group. Thank you for reacting to it!

My dad passed away a few weeks ago. This song expressing "love" as a theme is what he lived for. I'm sad for my loss, yet happy that he's not in pain anymore. This song has always given me chills, but now? Chills x10.

Yeah, and a tad bit of auto tune (the Kirsten E-flat chromatic part, and perhaps others). It’s all good-it was a tv broadcast and our ears are way too used to squeaky clean productions in my opinion, so an outside engineer/producer likely made that call, yeah? I bet it wouldn’t have bothered us without the auto tune, though, considering PTX’s skill level! Interesting that they left the very first octave PTX entrance alone.
@@JacobRestituto If they are using floor monitors they are a good distance away. On the jib shot that starts the first chorus you can see probably 8-10 feet in front of them and no monitors. It's definitely a version recorded live though as the mix isnt perfect and theres several vocal runs different from the recorded version they did.
@@kafinsmif I disagree about the autotune - around the 5:41 - 5:45 mark, Kirstin was the tiniest bit pitchy, before she recovers it and hits those high notes flawlessly. Also, we know it was a pre-recorded performance - they posted a portion of it almost a week prior. But it was a live recorded - you can hear their breath intake through the mics, which would have been removed at production if it was being lip synced to. At the beginning of the special, Vanessa Williams did say that several of the performances had been recorded in advance, and Pentatonix had already published a snippet of the song on their social media sites promoting the special, so I don't feel they were trying to "pass it off" as live.

It was suggested that she was fit or built for Broadway musicals & such so I think this definitely solidifies that.
