I just got this job done and it was easy thanks to you, Jeff. The procedure took me 30 minutes from start to finish and everything went smoothly. After I finished the job I knew I had to come back to thank you for your tips.
One of the best "how to" video for the average DIY. I never have soldered plumbing around my home, because of lack of know how. Thanks step by step instructions great 👍
Excellent step by step instructions, specially the soldering process. Very well explained 👏 It would be better without the music to make it easier to hear your instructions. Thank you, very much 😊 Thank you! 😊
I do a lot of my own repairs at home. Widowed and no kids to help, so I get a lot of jobs to do that I've never done before. Thank you for this video. I have a 'quarter turn' type outdoor faucet. Today it was leaking so badly I could fill an outdoor rain barrel in about an hour and a half! That's a bad leak! I was hoping to find information on how to replace my type of faucet, and only saw older type faucet videos, until I found yours! Yeah!!! I'll be working on my faucet in the morning, and I won't need to do any soldering, but only replace the quarter turn portion on mine. Since I had never done this before, I wanted to be sure I found a video that gave me all the information I needed to do it right. Thanks so much! I subscribed as I have to do repairs on all sorts of things from time to time, and it helps to know where to go to find the information. I may even change out my other faucets as the house is 35 years old and I imagine the faucets could use some attention after all this time. One question -- Do you have videos on determining if a faucet is leaking behind a wall? I am not sure if I have an issue, only that the water sounds really strong in my kitchen when I turn the faucet on outside. NO signs of water, but I get concerned that there may be a leak and I can't see it. I'd love to see a video on determine the location of a leak of this kind. Thanks again!!😌
Thanks for the detailed video! I tried to disconnect my water hose from the spigot and the entire thing snapped off! I found your video, bought the parts at Home Depot, and voila, I had a new spigot! The soldering was a little tricky for me, but I got it done. Thanks, again! 👍
Thank you. It was my first time doing this.. I was wondering why my the hose Bibb wasn’t coming off after I heated it… turns out all the water needs to be completely cut off. Good to know I’ll try again and hopefully I get a better turn out! Thank you for this educational video 👍

Yup, I wonder how many people forget to turn off the main water before they pop a bathroom vanity shut off valve off the pipe. I've gotten a few good laughs watching those TH-cam videos with gushers, and watching them try to hammer a Shark Bite end cap on, rather than going to shut off the water.
That was the most thorough and descriptive video I've seen for this process. This also tells me something very important....i'm going to call a plumber. LOL

i repiped my house and ran 400 feet of copper through the attic and have a lot of practice sweating over 160 joints. i learned from a master plumber to keep water away, take white bread and stuff it in the pipe to keep the joint dry. in your case i would tske a reciprocating saw and cut the front part of the spigot off to gain access to use the bread trick. it is faster than vacuuming out the water. good video though
That's great, thanks! I will take out the old school rubber plunge and replace it with the ball joint 1/4 turn. Never thought about it but the male adapter thread for future replacements if needed. Great shout out on the dripping faucet, that is what brought me here! Lol 1. I have used white bread (no crust) to hold back water. Is this method a good or bad one? Keep in mind I do not show an entire slice up there, just a bit so it can dissolve.
@@jeffostroff Wish I could show a photo of b4 n after but I ended up using Sharkbites for a no weld replacement and 2ft of 1" copper tubing. And I know you might have those in another video but I just wanted to let you know that your welding techniques are fantastic, I just ended up going with this. What is your opinion on those slip type fittings? Feet piping replacement ended up being a great job. Everything is watertight and fits perfectly. Awesome video! We've got hose bibs that appear to be soldered to a copper stub sticking out from our stucco home, unanchored. I'm assuming I should be able to find something that will allow me to anchor the pipe to the home after I fit the threaded adapter and new hose bib.
If the pipe is just sliding in and out of a hole in the wall, then after you solder on the new spigot, just get a tube of PL Adhesive 3X on the paint aisle, and fill in the gap all the way around the air gaps in there the pipe comes through the wall, then by next day when it cures hard, it won't move at all.
I think we used this piece, a 1/2" copper male adapter. @@jeffostroffyeah lots of fun hey from what I saw on the video it looks like you don't have to put the male adapter on the valve tighten it up then put it on the pipe to line it up so the valve ends up facing down mark it and take the valve off ? I'm concerned that it will not if I don't
My plumber put the threaded opening of the ball valve like what you have directly over the 1/2-inch copper pipe and solder them together. Is the joint strong enough to withstand the torque from opening and closing of the valve over time? I am afraid of a catastrophic failure of the joint. Thanks in advance.

@@scholasticbookfair.…. Who better than to show you how to repair something than an “old” person? At least you know it will be done properly. Heaven forbid a millennial has to install a new toilet seat …. Oh no… 😢
Hey my dad and are tryimg to remove a soldered hose bib but steam is coming out of the spigot and the seal does not seem to losen. We already tried vacuuming out the water for 2-10 minutes. How long should we keep the shop vac on to completely drain it?
If the water is still running when you stop vacuuming, you'll have to try to open up some faucets, find a lower spot in the house where there is another valve. But if that does not help try shutting off the water at the curb, or try the bread trick, which we cover in this video here: th-cam.com/video/wJxGcpybFvw/w-d-xo.html
One major issue with this vid and that is it's rarely that easy to take the spigot off of that copper pipe. In fact it's usually HELL! Can you imagine a spigot being on a copper tube for 10, 20, 30 plus years. You bet - it's practically fused together and many times almost impossible. This vid seems like the best case scenario and it's not realistic. Taking that spigot off, if it's been on there a long time, is HELL to get off. Overall a very good instructional video,
@@kelvinadams4877 I had a few people run into me at home depot that recognized 3, and one of our of subscribers came up to me at Costco last week I recognized me there also
We cut off the water main by the street, because the house main shutoff was still allowing water to leak. Typical cheap garbage valves that builders were using in 1993.
You are lucky that you didn't twist that pipe when you tried to loosen it, i have repaired quite a few when people saw threads and tried wrenching on it.
Sometimes they are 1" sometimes 3/4". I believe that normally your main water line coming into your house is 1 inch and sometimes they will step that down to a three quarter inch connection for your hose bib, and sometimes they don't
We have much better camera, lapel mics, and post processing technique snow that began 2 months after this video with $5000 investment in pro gear, so all our newer how to videos if you look in our videos tab, are much better 4k video and audio quality.
Interesting you chose a female threaded hose bibb and male adapter. Most hose bibbs I've seen are male threaded like the old one you removed. Either work, I just find it more common to find male threaded hose bibbs.

@@NEILZEE11 what does that even mean? I'm not a millennial and I just don't like complainers.
@@scholasticbookfair. …. Hey, you’re the one who mentioned “old people”. Besides the annoying music, the plant was in the way 😊
I have a similar gate valve and I want to replace it. How can I been sure it is not soldered in place?
Is copper ok for Cold weather outside? It gets cold out here in Chicago winters.
They make special valves that survive the winter
jeffostroff thanks 👍🏻
Hey my dad and are tryimg to remove a soldered hose bib but steam is coming out of the spigot and the seal does not seem to losen. We already tried vacuuming out the water for 2-10 minutes. How long should we keep the shop vac on to completely drain it?
If the water is still running when you stop vacuuming, you'll have to try to open up some faucets, find a lower spot in the house where there is another valve. But if that does not help try shutting off the water at the curb, or try the bread trick, which we cover in this video here: th-cam.com/video/wJxGcpybFvw/w-d-xo.html
Ah we got it off!
But the spigot is the male end and the main pipe is female? Do we still use male adapter?
Plumber just quoted me $1,100 to replace the hose bib. Absolutely insane. 2 guys at 6 hours of labor. Wonder what they’ll be doing for 6 hours?
Hi Jeff,
I live in the northeast would it be okay to install the same kind of bib as the one in your video or do I need a special anti frost one?
I would look into getting an anti frost one for sure Adrian
Can you help me replace my outdoor faucet?
Grate!!!!!!👍🏽
What is the little bracket on the Bibb almost touching the house? Is it a support for the Bibb?
That is a clamp for a ground wire. It's painted over but you can see it
@@jeffostroff A ground wire for what? Mine has the same thing on it. Do I need that wire?
One major issue with this vid and that is it's rarely that easy to take the spigot off of that copper pipe. In fact it's usually HELL! Can you imagine a spigot being on a copper tube for 10, 20, 30 plus years. You bet - it's practically fused together and many times almost impossible. This vid seems like the best case scenario and it's not realistic. Taking that spigot off, if it's been on there a long time, is HELL to get off. Overall a very good instructional video,
Good video, do you guys live in florida by chance? Merry chrismax
Yes this was in Ft. Lauderdale
Awesome, im in miramar, hope meet you one day haha
@@kelvinadams4877 I had a few people run into me at home depot that recognized 3, and one of our of subscribers came up to me at Costco last week I recognized me there also
Any reason you cut off the main even though you have a disconnect valve?
We cut off the water main by the street, because the house main shutoff was still allowing water to leak. Typical cheap garbage valves that builders were using in 1993.
Best guess what would this exact job cost me...??? Thanks
You can expect most plumbers to charge between $150 and $200 for this job
Good video but why did you not replace the gate valve while you had the water off.
Can’t believe how much a torch head goes for these days, some are over $50 without the fuel canister!
I would like to have finished watching this video but the damn music was so loud I couldn’t stand it.
I know not one of our better mixes we've changed our whole setup after this and you won't hear that anymore on any of our videos since then
You are lucky that you didn't twist that pipe when you tried to loosen it, i have repaired quite a few when people saw threads and tried wrenching on it.
That's why we always test it out first with the 2 wrenches 1 to hold it steady
For some reason my hose bib is 1 inch any idea why?
Sometimes they are 1" sometimes 3/4". I believe that normally your main water line coming into your house is 1 inch and sometimes they will step that down to a three quarter inch connection for your hose bib, and sometimes they don't
Nice informative video but the music gets in the way and is distracting.
Sorry about that we don't do that anymore, that's was over 2 years ago, we have better cameras, mics, and production now.
@@jeffostroff awesome!
Thats how mine is they soldered it on so thats my next project...as it leaks the valve....
Maybe opening a faucet inside the house could help prevent it from dripping
How much does it usually cost?
Plumbers might charge $150 or more to come do this job.
Could hardly hear you... the background music and ambient noise is too much so I couldn't watch. Try and use music for times without dialogue.
We have much better camera, lapel mics, and post processing technique snow that began 2 months after this video with $5000 investment in pro gear, so all our newer how to videos if you look in our videos tab, are much better 4k video and audio quality.
How much does this job typically cost if a plumber was called to do this?
Anywhere from $150 to $300
👍👍✌️
Thanks for watching Ron!
Interesting you chose a female threaded hose bibb and male adapter. Most hose bibbs I've seen are male threaded like the old one you removed. Either work, I just find it more common to find male threaded hose bibbs.
The background music made some of this impossible to hear.
Why won’t my hose pip melt off, my copper melted before the old solder

I only use 50/50 Lead/Tin. Nothing on earth solders as good as that stuff.
Except they don't allow it anymore. Lead free is the way to go, and it still makes a good solder connection.
I'd rather hear the real noise (of the torque and others) instead of the stupid music. Other than that it's great video.
Thanks for the feedback David!
There really is no reason to have music in background
Good , thanks . Get rid of the background music .
we use better studio gear now and better techniques
