Semco is a great choice for a natural looking teak surface. I did the same thing on both the hand and toe rail on my 53 Defever. Turns a slick surface into a rail that you can actually grab when wet! Just be sure to recoat before it wears away.

Never, ever, ever allow your autopilot to make pre-programmed turns for you. If you want to use it to navigate to a point, fine. Just set your point well enough ahead of your intended turn that you can either hand steer through the turn or punch in the turn yourself at the appropriate time. Allowing your autopilot to decide it's safe to initiate a turn, especially in restricted waters, is a recipe for disaster, as you experienced. I caught my crew doing that once on a Chesapeake Bay trip and, trust me, they'll never do it again! Props to you for "fessing up." Experience is the best teacher. Someone else's experience is usually less expensive!
I have seen that some newest Nordhavn Yachts are using a teak wood imitation instead of the real teak because it does not require any maintenance and still looks great, but it is even more expensive than real teak. Using a sealant instead of varnish is probably a good idea to make it easier to maintain in the future, good job!
All good ideas, but I use two coats of Cetol Marine Gloss finish over a first coat (on bear teak) of Cetol Natural Teak finish. Really brings out the beauty of the wood like no other method, and holds up (no flaking or bleaching) for years with no sanding between coats or when refinishing! Heart warming teak rails and next-to-no maintenance!

Should you ever go from Florida to the Bahamas you will experience a current of more than 5 knots in the Gulf Stream heading north. Should your boat only be making about 7-8 knots, your autopilot following a course will turn further and further south to try to maintain no cross track error until it is pointing due south against the current. As a result, your distance made good will go to zero and you never get to the Bahamas. Instead of following a route, you need to calculate the northerly set you will incur during the crossing using average boat and average Gulf Stream current speed.
Should have the rail rebuilt with King Starboard. Never have to re-finish again. Can have it textured anyway you want it and formed any style. Can even get it in colors and could do something in gray or lighter color or even black if you want. I use it for a number of projects and works great. Worth a look anyway.
"Driving the magenta line" is actually a fairly common mistake many people make. Its common for people using auto pilot tied to their plotter, to just watch the progress on the course line, and not the water around them. To combat that potentially disastrous scenario (I ran aground once because of it) I am constantly checking and marking my location on paper charts using nav aids. Its the main reason paper charts are always next to me at the helm of ANY boat I am steering. Especially when using a plotter!. Glad you are sharp and aware, and did not hole that beautiful vessel!
I hope you head for Alaska before you leave the northwest. We took the plunge this year. We are 2/3 of the way through our 3 month trip exploring Southeast Alaska. It's not as daunting as you might think. It is worth going at least once if not more.
Man, thank God you guys averted that rock. Is that due to a tracking issue and if so, what can you guys do? Buy a different auto pilot system? Also, I miss that boat captain Q&A segment…
I don’t know anything about boats but I am a pilot and an aircraft owner, when my autopilot « makes a programmed turn, » it follows a signal (in this case gps), any deviation to the programmed « path », caused by the wind or current, will be followed by an appropriate « correction » from the autopilot. The reaction time from the autopilot (any and all autopilots will react more or less with the same lag), will result in a deviation from that path. He reacted much faster than any autopilot ever could. Good job!
Agree that it is better to avoid wood, but if you have it, it sure looks nice varnished. My son makes a living refinishing teak on boats and says that if you gave your rails a light sanding and a coat of varnish every year, you would go five or six years between major refinishing. For the serious refinish, hire someone to do it. Rails like yours can be done while the boat is in the water and aren't that expensive to get done because you are not paying for skilled labor.
That's it? my boat has lots of teak trim. The flat surfaces fare the worst. Get yourselves a Bahco scraper and you'll be down to bare wood in no time. Seal it well, and lay on 5-7 coats of varnish. I like Interlux Schooner or Epiphanes. Some make fabric covers for the winter and seem to do OK.
for teak we used to use Sikkens Cetol M. It can be cleaned and then new apps blend in with no need to remove all of the old stuff. Bare wood takes about 4 - 6 coats. More than that and it starts to seal and then crack.
We recently did a video that included the teak… and we have a whole lot more than you! We have found the SEMCO seeps in the rain, and I think we will be doing it more often than previously thought. nevertheless it looks much nicer than our old bare wood, and I would never varnish. Have thought about Epoxy, which a lot of boats are now doing. Zarpe 62 32 just did it.
Hey folks you should have taped off the edges of the hand rail before you re-varnished. Apply two coats then wait a half an hour to let the coating set, then pull off the tape. It will save you a lot grief and frustration in the process. Also work out of a 1 gal pail/can with an inch of varnish in the can , use a 2 inch pure bristle brush, let it hang in water over night if you need, it will keep soft and usable the next day. I am a professional boat painter. Heat guns wont lift the old varnish off on harden old marine spar varnish
We just bought a new boat last year and my only requirement that I would not budge on was no exterior wood. Have you thought about replacing the back railing with something synthetic? There are some really nice options out there.
I switched from varnish (epiphanes) on the cap rails to Awlwood Clear Gloss.. wonderful. went from 2 year varnish cycles to .. not sure, because it's still standing tall!

Sorry you will probably never get to know the joys of the look, sounds, smell, and feel of a wooden boat. In addition working on a wooden boat is far more satisfying than buffing fiberglass. Recommend that you take in the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend Sept. 9-11. You will enjoy it.
My friend has a wooden 40ft or so Mathews. - It was like owning a helicopter. Fly it 10 hours work on it 5 hours. He always invited friends and associate on weekends so they could work on the boat in the morning and run it in the afternoon. Boats are labor intensive enough without spending more time fixing rot, soft spots, or scraping and treating wood. While wood is beautiful, running and using the boat is a lot more fun than being a part time boat-wright, the lower maintenance the better. Fleming yachts, for example, has come up with a cap rail that looks like wood but is a synthetic low maintenance material.
@@mvfreedom I surely hope Florida is calling with sunshine dreams and white sand beaches LOL And lots of places to explore, but you may miss the cold weather and snow ??
Yeah, but did you see how shallow it gets there? Whatcha gonna do with an tender that grounds way off the beach, let alone having to pull up the outboard and pole you way closer? I admire that they have this option and are young enough to pull it off!
I tried to program my wife to perform certain tasks. I learned real quick why most boats have female names or titles. One word from us and they do as they please. I also learned the boat golden rule. Thou shalt not piss off the cook.
You could replace the wood and the ladder steps on the stern and the ladder steps with starboard. They make starboard in a gove grey color which would look great.
Wood work is intense and time consuming. Just think if you had a wooden boat! Maybe you already watch “Travels With Geordi” but if not check it out. Peter Knowles is a master craftsman and he has done amazing work on his 1953 Monk Tri-Cabin Cruiser. Love your channel and thank for taking us along on your journey. Very much enjoy it!
Some of it, obviously. Plenty fell on the deck, which I'm sure was disposed of properly. Some varnish is made from natural products, unlike millions of tons of anti-fouling paint that ends up in the ocean every year. Pick your battles.
Contraire. There’s no battle to pick. Just pointing out pollution to our waters, gross negligence and something that should be done “on the hard.” (On the hard, not on the cheap in another’s cove) Do you really know the properties of the varnish you scraped off ? Did you properly dispose of the varnish you gathered from the deck/boat? (That’s a bag of special goodies you will have a receipt for because you can’t just dispose of it anywhere) It’s only appropriate that we engage with the EPA/ WA State and determine what and how much you dumped into the water. “Some” is not a number and any amount is not acceptable. Your straw man argument about all the bottom paint polluting the waters is about as credible as two people slugging around at 8 knots burning fossil fuel( with or without bottom paint) making videos for profit. I’ll pick my battles when it’s a battle and not a violation and possibly a crime
I live aboard Sea Prince.. a Norfolk Broads Cruiser built in 1946 .. Mahogany, Oak and other assorted wood... 😻 ... You could do with removing the hinge and other fittings and treat and use a sealant to stop water getting under there.. have some spare screw's that are slightly longer or use stainless threaded bolts.. Use PTFE under screw head to stop water and a scalpel to poke in or remove anything visible.. Chips can be repaired with waterproof UV stable cyanoacrylate... I would have taken them off done a full treatment and proper bedding.. I didn't like the seam of sealant, could be a water trap.. btw.. always 'moor' aka tie up a board or dingy even on land.. preferably to something that doesn't float but that log would have been ok..

Tip: check the charts and understand the underwater topography to look for currents and how they could affect the boat. Deeper channels have more current because they have less resistance to tides, etc. Currents will flow around rocks, islands, etc. Also understand the tide tables to know whether currents are flooding, ebbing, etc. In other words, you can study and predict ahead of time where the currents will be, to a large extent. Good software like Navionics also calculates this.

The only information I have is my great grandfather and grandfather emigrated to Canada in the 1870-1880's and spent time in Quebec, Montreal I think and Ontario. My grandfather emigrated to the US in 1890-1900 and settled in Cleveland.
@@wizardgmb Well for when you do your study of your family tree, My father was born in Paris Ontario and my Grand father was Chief of police in Paris Ontario. You never know how this may connect. Takecare.
So I have been seeing people varnish their wood and than put a clear coat of epoxy over that- have you considered looking into that method?
Shawn/Elisabeth, I've followed you for awhile. I'm visiting in the PNW, Mukilteo and if your in port today I'd love to stop and just say hello and meet you.
You are leaving the area? Where are you guys going?
Update coming later this summer!
@@mvfreedom I surely hope Florida is calling with sunshine dreams and white sand beaches LOL And lots of places to explore, but you may miss the cold weather and snow ??
@@mvfreedom I sensed something was up! Sure am impatient to find out the plan! 💕

Have you thought of replacing the wood with something like UltraDeck (foam rubber)?
Have't returned to Spenser Spit in a long time due to the flies. Did I see you at Echo Bay Tuesday and Wednesday?
That water looks way too cold to risk tumbling off a paddle board, it would be the motor boat for me
Yeah, but did you see how shallow it gets there? Whatcha gonna do with an tender that grounds way off the beach, let alone having to pull up the outboard and pole you way closer? I admire that they have this option and are young enough to pull it off!
I tried to program my wife to perform certain tasks. I learned real quick why most boats have female names or titles. One word from us and they do as they please. I also learned the boat golden rule. Thou shalt not piss off the cook.
If it would just quit raining these year. It's time for the sun to come out. Hahaha
Amen to that!!!
Another fun video... Oh and a little work.
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
How come you guys don’t put up an anchor ball? Is that only for certain size ships at anchor?
You could replace the wood and the ladder steps on the stern and the ladder steps with starboard.
They make starboard in a gove grey color which would look great.
Nordhavn makes those railings in epoxy, and since you only have a few feet of it, maybe epoxy is the answer!? 😉
Sean you are a next level boat guy ( & an amazing partner & husband ) like they say “ team work makes the dream work “ ❤ to you guys
Plasteak is wonderful and quite reasonably priced. They made coachroof grabrails from a pattern I suppled.
Ha ha pup on the bow of paddleboard ..come on, let's gooo!
Daly's Seafin Teak oil should work fine--readily available, inexpensive and a Seattle based product-----Mikey, in Belfair
Another excellent video. Keeping it real maintenance combined with leisure
I don't think I've ever seen Spencer Spit with so few boats just off the beach. Paradise!
Weather has sucked.
Just splice a piece of wood into the chip and sand it flush with the rail use wood glue.
Is this guy scraping all that varnish in the water?
Yup! >3
Some of it, obviously. Plenty fell on the deck, which I'm sure was disposed of properly. Some varnish is made from natural products, unlike millions of tons of anti-fouling paint that ends up in the ocean every year. Pick your battles.
Contraire. There’s no battle to pick.
Just pointing out pollution to our waters, gross negligence and something that should be done “on the hard.” (On the hard, not on the cheap in another’s cove)
Do you really know the properties of the varnish you scraped off ? Did you properly dispose of the varnish you gathered from the deck/boat? (That’s a bag of special goodies you will have a receipt for because you can’t just dispose of it anywhere)
It’s only appropriate that we engage with the EPA/ WA State and determine what and how much you dumped into the water.
@@cliffoftahoe Take a pill wokester.
17:20. Liz is so shocked to see animals doing what all animals do. She is going to be positively traumatised if Shaun ever gets horny. She will be in therapy for the rest of her life.
+1 Carl; So sad grown adults are surprised at copulation of species. To a farmer rancher that is watching a pen of ovulating fat heifers; I'm appalled and ashamed.
LOL
😂
I enjoyed the video. Great to see work and fun in the same video. Stay safe and have fun.
Really good video this week 👍
Thank you for sharing

Have you thought any more about getting a larger Nordhavn??
Just watched "Chris & Sarah" (yt) who are full-time travelers in a Mercedes conversion van. The vid was about their StarLink install.
