My tip would be, if you have enough space put in a small test tube nest if you want to use this kind of setup. This way there is not much that can go wrong. When it is not covered they will leave the Test-tube and build their own nest anyway. But if you screw up the hydration they can move back for emergency.
@@EnderAnts I think hydration is the problem as well! As they are, they will either be under-watered & dry out too fast (no digging) Or you add a sufficient amount of water for them to dig a chamber *but* since there isn't a drainage layer under the soil, the water turns it into a swamp before they can dig deep enough‼️ If you just put a 3/4inch layer of small particle aquarium gravel or lava rock down first and some mesh over the gravel to keep sand out; then you could full moisten the sand/dirt but the extra water would drain down into the rocks and 1. Keep their chamber from getting swampy and 2. The water evaporation would give them a *proper* humidity gradient to choose from! (Moist/humid deep and dryer by surface)
Love the video, Ender! Please keep entertaining us! On a side note, I just gave my small pogonomyrmex colonies their first substrate earlier today so this video was super relevant for me.
That's true but I try to keep them in a test tube until the queen has 5 to 10 workers before giving them substrate. Relieves my anxiety about their wellbeing. Lol!
AAAAAnother sweet video mate. Those setups are so simple and practical, plus all the components are cheep and easy to obtain even here in Australia. The only thing I would try to ad is some kind of overflow vent or something incase of flooding. I nearly drowned one of my colonies because I was over watering them.
Lemme just say a few things: 1. Honestly I LOVE the setups. And the containers, even more. 2.Sand doesn't do too much of a good job retaining moisture. So you know... 3.I love those font styles. 4.I would love to see a pheidole colony in one of these setups. The tunnels they make are gonna be epic. Also also Thank you very much for the shoutout!
Thank you for the input & compliments! Trying out many different mixtures for substrate soon, and will hopefully find a Pheidole queen in the summer :D
I got one good tip for the future.... *DRILL at least ONE HOLE* into one of the sides and plug it up. Once the colony gets bigger you put on a tube and connect it to whatever... You can either expand it or make them move out this way. Having them move out of those could be tricky if you dont have a huge arena and ramp or something......
Hey! Amazing video as always, didn't even know you had a discord server, I'm taking a look right now and just found out you have a second channel, I'll be paying attention to that.
This would be great with a test tube at the bottoms connected to a regular 3/8 tube leading to the surface. Then they could have water, a perfect spot if they don’t like the rest of the nest, and an outworld surface.
Two questions. 1 Can I move a queen into one of these setups when she's still in hibernation, or should I wait til spring? 2 can I use a more coarse sand or does it have to be super fine?
I recently introduced a colony to a natural nest in the same kind of setup, and I wanted to ask, how do you prevent moisture buildup on the sides and lid? Also, how would you introduce a test tube colony to one of these if the test tube is longer than the box? Great video btw!
You can drill a hole into the top lid and hot glue mesh from the bottom. That’s what I did with a few of these and they work really well. I haven’t moved any colonies into one of these setups except for one of my Dorymyrmex. The formicarium they were in (Mini Hearth from Tarheelants) was just the right size to fit entirely in a container so I just placed it in. But if the test tube cant fit and they are in dire need of being moved, I’d dump them in. There would have to be a barrier beforehand so they wont escape while the lid is open
no, but it would be best if you caught them in an arid area and put them in an arid kind of environment. same with ants you find in a jungle, you’d put them with soil and plants instead of sand
Hey it's me the antloverguy, this was interesting no doubt about that, I need to join the discord soon, I got some ideas on natural (not gel) formicariums/outworld hopefully people will also take interests in my ideas, yet love the video
I wish I had a square like container like that but I don’t, so for now I’m using goof size jars and some dirt and it seems to be doing good for me so far :3
@@EnderAnts okay. You don't mind them getting hurt? That sounds really hard. How can you make sure that it Doesn't squeeze ants, or eggs, or the queen, maybe even kill them? I guess you can't make that sure....
Queen ants have their flights in the spring-fall, depending on how warm it gets in your area. You can also buy queen ants from people selling them nearby through the GAN Farm, on forums like Formiculture, or any websites selling them where it is legal to sell them.
Ahh yes that too. For most queen ants I recently catch, I’ve noticed their gaster gets larger before they start laying eggs. I think it was called physogastry or at least on a smaller scale of it. But the one’s with a thinner gaster usually don’t reach a point where it gets larger, and don’t lay eggs.

No, i wouldn’t recommend it unless the container is larger. Also depends on how big the colony is.

Gel farm, trow out gel, use sand instead, then its suitable
big gaster means more food, not higher chance of her being fertile
