Avoid These Mistakes When Planting Fruit Trees in the Desert

- We get a lot of questions about what fruit trees can survive our Arizona Sonoran desert. It all Depends on the root stock they are growing on, citation rootstocks are harder to adapt to our climate. it just takes longer for them to grow a hardy root system that can handle our dry periods in the early summer. Rsi Growers in Glendale Arizona grow their own rootstocks and graft multiple varieties of fruit tree scions to them so we can enjoy fruit trees that will and do handle our summers as well as low chill hour varieties. here is a list of our fruit trees that can handle our desert location.

Here we go! I call myself the “busted bag specialist” 😂 because that’s all I look for. Great tips on planting. It’s always best to buy quality products that won’t need to be replaced too quickly. Thanks for sharing and stay blessed fam!

I'm guilty as well, always looking for deals and scratch and dent items! Lol
I can't wait to see what you got up your sleeve this growing season!
Are you still using your green greenhouse?
Also had two Chicago figs they died first year in,
So sorry to hear that! What do you think went wrong? @@bhavens9149
Wow--peat moss went way up...like everything else. It was $16 late last year. I should have stocked up. The sunshine mix is basically peat moss with perlite and some extras.
Everything is up, at least 20%.
Looks like we will be milking down what we already have in stock with sand this year..
red cedar brings brown apple moths, so might not go for that one if you're growing apple. (also some of those products bring their own pests, ) Just an FYI Also if you like Figs you might look for Desert King, not easy to find, but it works! thanks for the video! Love to see people working with what they have available where they are!
I did not know about the red cedar, that's the first time I've seen it. Thanks for the heads up! We use pine bark and wood chips.
We do have a desert king fig but it seems to put on fruit late in the season, it didn't ripen this year before the tree went dormant.
Have you grown a desert king fig?
@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard Interesting, should produce all September, for you, did you guys get hit with Hillery? she messed up some of my fruit harvest. Also some of my trees didn't really start producing til year 5, and figs are usually early producers. suspect it was environmental.
@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard neighbor has the Desert King & I have turkey, and some gorgeous green fig I got from a guy a few blocks over that I have NO idea what it is, I want the king, because it fits my winters better than the turkey, (share with neighbors so we can all get more fruit) I'm in 8B at 3300 feet, we can get as hi as 115 in mid august, and generally only get into 30's at night in winter, occasional twenties and once every so many years we might get as low as 15, but that is rare, that Desert King is doing well, so yeah helped put it in and we all help each other with the trees (4 neighbors growing back yard, I have a whole 1/4 acre to grow on because my house is set more forward than theirs, also couple of cherries, apricot, plum and a Pawnee Pecan oh yeah Mulberry and pom. too
I cannot find a pink grapefruit trees.
Check for Ruby Red grapefruit, they will be very common this spring at the local nurseries.
What nurseries have you looked at for pink grapefruit so far?
Do you use steer manure in your garden?
Yes, but we use it on the top as mulch. It is very high in nitrogen and may rot The Roots if you use it as an amendment.
We also use steer manure for our grass to fertilize it.
This year we have so much compost, we will only use our compost as fertilizer. We are starting that now!
Hello sir,
Can i get hard wood or plants of wonderful pomegranate.
Are you here locally in arizona?
@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard no sir
I am from India
@@YashpalSharmaVlogs we are working on getting our U. S. Department of agriculture license to be able to ship our seeds and plants. We will post a video when that is available.
@@YashpalSharmaVlogs check on line for hard wood cuttings or live plants. I'm sorry I can't recommend a local grower for your area.
Which home depot is that?
The Home Depot in Surprise, Bell and Grand.
@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard thanks. Hopefully the ones over in the east side start getting some in. Went to two yesterday and they had just citrus, pomegranates, and berries.
Yeah, I was surprised to see them. It's seems early. Traditionally they start arriving in March.
I know tractor supply starts setting up their trees in March as well as their seeds.
@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard thanks for the reply. Hopefully I have a few weeks before they show up around here. It gives me time to work on my excuse for buying more trees. Lol
