Jackie McLean described Bud something like this: "there was always something exciting in Bud's music, like one of the Three Musketeers... like Zorro... like someone who would take from the rich and give to the poor... something gallant and beautiful." Perfect description.

Thankfully europe was hip enough to capture greats like bud and other jazz and blues greats that would never have been filmed in the fifties and early sixties in the USA , there’s another brilliant film of bud playing around midnight with a very young nils Pederson on bass

He was more than that. He was the preeminent bop pianist. The creator of the bop piano style. All the pianist who came after him had to base their style on his concept before they could go beyond.

Was absolutely floored by the brilliance of Bud's playing the first time I heard him on the great "Jazz At Massey Hall" album w/ Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Mingus and Max Roach. Got all Bud's Blue Note and Verve albums and as many European recordings as I could find. Was absolutely floored again and again.

His touch was idiosyncratic and jarring at times. He was a maniac on the piano, and really one of the central figures in bop. Listening and watching him in a trio format is astonishing. Thanks for this.

This includes 5 live recordings at different places.Happy to hold those recordings.Tea for tea.You think it#s not possible what he is playing.
I think in his early 50's no body wa equal in the bebop style.

So incredible, it’s almost insane... Bud’s fingers look like they’re tap dancing across those keys.
