Wow! Really impressed with this video. Good demonstration of the pedals and really articulate when discussing their differences. Can't believe you only have 2k subs. Keep it up!!
Had both and ended up selling the JHS. The Broadcast just did what I needed a lot better, which is slight gain to fat fuzz sounds. The Broadcast is also about half the price of the JHS and you can get a dual footswitch version. The JHS does have a lot more utility in that it can function as a general pre with XLR in and outs, but that's not something I needed.
Every demo I've heard of that JHS has a prominent high end airy hiss when turned up. Did you notice that with your's as well. Other than that I like what the pedal can offer.
@@iamkennymartin The Hudson is a Germanium circuit with a big output transformer. The JHS I'm not sure about the circuit, but I don't think it's FET either. The sound of both is really characterized by high-quality gain followed by the saturation of the output transformer - similar to a preamp in a console
I'm not sure what you were going for here. You said the CB was brighter but then you backed the treble off so that so that it was not as bright as the broadcast. You also had the CB's high pass filter on high enough that it removed the upper low end meat. Don't get me wrong, both are fantastic pedals, but the color box has WAY more shaping possibilities. That doesn't mean better, the circuit just has more adjustments built in. It doesn't feel like you took the time to dial it in. Takes more effort to tweak, but why buy a pedal if you're not going to take the time to tweak? I'm positive to you could have showed that the color box can sound very close to the Hudson, where as the Hudson can't mimic all the tone possibilities of the CB. Again I don't think one's really better. The designers had different goals.
Hmmm...the CB sound scooped in the lower mids, something is missing. The gain structure sound wooly and muddy up the signal. The BC sound more musically and add some nice low end u can control with the low-cut. I think in a full band or mix the BC will shine and add something very nice help cut through, the CB add something your signal goes more in the backround and will not cut through.
I've got the jhs colourbox v2 and the broadcast AP, I use the colourbox as a utility pedal, parametric eq, tone sweetener type thing, I hate the broken velcro like fuzz sounds it can make. I use the AP as a preamp, dirty boost, it's simply fantastic!
Both sound pretty good, both are expensive A.F., which makes them the perfect pedals to demo/compare. One small constructive criticism. To be more scientific an A/B box and a loop recorder should be used.
Great video. I have a Broadcast and it's just so ridiculously well dialled-in. I have the version that allows you to run at 9-24v and when run at 9v with the internal gain trimmer wound up it can get pretty crazy! I don't think that's where it's stregths lie though. It's an outstanding low-medium gain preamp. Subscribed!
I wonder if your conclusions that the broadcast is more transparent, less fiZz save more bass because it's running at 24 Volt compared to the 18 of the color box
A real Neve 1073 channel with EQ cost $2k and is typically used at the very end of the chain after the mic where it is used to smoothly things out and give a little more tonal separation. Using this as an OD is something very different and I'm not digging it compared to the Broadcast.
Timothy H Ingham yeah, the thing the colour box is replicating is the way bands like the Beatles used to plug directly into a Neve console to get that really specific direct / overdriven sound like on the song “revolution”. It’s super unique but it’s not for everyone!
@@timothyhingham3672 yeah the authentic / classic sound would be to use the DI out of the Colour Box (it has one built in)... But I will say the amp actually mellows out the sound a bit -- straight from the DI it's pretty nuts! But it's very similar to that direct console sound
@@danjack-son4871 I don't use an effects loop, but mine is near the beginning of the pedal chain. I have my POG and KLON before it, because the higher voltage of the Broadcast works best that way for gain stacking
I like what that JHS has to offer, but that high end hiss is impossible to ignore. I noticed that hiss on other demo videos of it as well. Not sure if turning down it's treble control is a remedy. If it had a low pass filter on it that would make it good to go. Oh well.

Broadcast has a really nice, almost fuzzy characteristic to its break-up. Love those crunchy tones.

1 Broadcast. 2 Color Box. They are both great pedals. Overall sound and usefulness and ease of use: Broadcast.
Very cool! Would love to see a Hudson Broadcast vs Benson Preamp shootout next!
E. Son of Ander already shot it, coming soon ;-)
Are they both FET-based?
I’d also like to see Benson or Hudson v. Superbolt

Broadcast to me is the best Always-On I’ve ever used. More than any Klon(e)
Great idea for a video!!! Thanks

weakbrainthrombosis yeah agree - as buffers and/or true bypass can affect tone. Looking to grab one sometime soon for future comparisons.
Thank you for this video

Thank you! Yeah it is still probably my all-time favorite drive. Such an enormous sound
some of the tone you got out of this reminds me of Shellac
My Black Ass

@@AaronSternke maybe people should run it into a DI box rather than a slightly dirty amp then. Maybe it sounds better that way.

thanks for doing this...just picked up the Broadcast and heard about the color box later...which one do you like for the volume roll-off clean up?
I'd say I prefer the Broadcast - it's a bit more transparent overall and it really does clean up beautifully
👍🏿🤘
Thoughts... first in the effects loop or last after reverb?
Currently I have mine first before the wet effects.
I have mine first

‘Broadcast can’t do the same broken console sound as the Colour Box’. 11:30: gets the same broken console sound lol.
i see we have a spoon fan (:
Broadcast is so much better sounding !
JHS has a higher noise floor.

@@burninglcd Christian...Could you post your feelings once you get a handle on the ColourBox V2? That would be appreciatted.

The Hudson sound much better out here in videoland. The colorbox sounds like a cheap copy.... and this is coming from a JHS pedal lover.
Why are you comparing those two? It's obvious they're very different pedals.
They're both supposed to simulate a Neve board preamp.
