Thanks for posting. I did the same thing on my 84 Carrera. I had a bad ring gear on the flywheel and a bad pinon gear. I took the starter apart but could not remove it. I found your video but no explanation how to remove the gear. I finally figured it out after a couple of hours, I put a new solenoid, tested it outside the car ,perfect. Installed the starter and started the car fine, the next day upon starting, whining noise from the starter the gear would not retract.Took the starter out, tested again, fine. Put it back, whining noise even with two good batteries. I am giving up and ordered a new starter. Thanks anyway. Bernard

This was amazing! Thank you for all the detail and video...
(would you remember what temperature did you set your soldering iron to unsolder the solenoid? I hate to scorch it... ) but truly thank you!

Don't remember unfortunately. You could try setting the temp low and turn it up gradually until it just melts.

Great video! I see you have 2 washers before you mount the brush plate. I'm missing the insulating washer. Do you know a source where I can find it?

I would find a hardware supplier near you and search phenolic insulating or high temp plastic insulating washers. I like McMaster Carr as they have everything and are local to me.
