Porsche 914: How To Diagnose An Overheating Engine | Wheeler Dealers

  • Mike brings a Porsche 914 into the workshop for refurbishment, getting Ed to pay particular attention to the overheating engine. As a rare mid-engine sports car, it was designed to be air-cooled using bellows and oil-coolers, both things Ed must check before taking the motor apart.

    Ed China, has the rare common touch as a great communicator ‘combined with unsurpassed mechanical knowledge and skill... it made compelling viewing ! Can’t see it happening ( but as they say never say never ) but the shows Producers should enter new contract negotiations with Ed to ensure the longevity of Wheeler dealers.
    Frankly, his replacement just doesn’t have the same gravitas.

    Most overlooked is the oil pressure relief valve. You can check all other things, but an oil pressure relief valve that is not functioning properly is dumping hot oil back into the cylinders.

    The inner drive shaft joint is another good vw/porsche idea. Have done drive shafts on a couple of vw cars. Split the joint and leave part of the joint in the diff. No risk of losing gearbox oil.

    I love this video so much. But, that thermostat will fail in the closed position and will cook your engine before you even realize. The bellow is essential for this engine as it fails in the open position. Please don’t cook your engine just to save a few bucks. Again, I love this episode and so happy they did it

    Dealership tech during the entire run of the 914 - first remove the engine lid/cover - 2nd check the fan for "crap" / paper etc .3rd make sure thermostat cable is on pully & lubed. All your basic tune up/ checks can be done w/o engine removal- includes. Valve adj. air leak checks, timing, fuel pressure. Less is more sometimes. I've even done 914-6 valve adjustment w/o removing motor- small hands, wrists a must though .

    Much as I liked Ant Anstead (and Phillip Glenister) in "For the Love of Cars" I just feel that Wheeler Dealers has become sanitised and has lost some of the unique appeal that set it apart from all the other car shows. The producers have missed the point by altering the format and moving away from the workshop content that Edd used to provide. I see why they might have done it but it hasn't worked; I think they watched "For the Love of Cars" and thought "thats what we want". FTLOC worked over the half dozen episodes culminating in the classy auction but I can't imagine that format retaining its appeal over 150+ episodes. I'm becoming bored with the slightly contrived on-screen persona(s), I'm irritated that Ant Anstead can't pronounce the word "leverage" lest he alienate the American audience - its all a bit pants-wetting.
    Edd China's genuine, slightly-grumpy-sometimes personality was the je ne se quois that held it together. Sadly I think we may have lost Edd for good.

    One of the great things that Porsche thought of when designing the 914, that if the bellows fail, the flaps stick in the open position; it is the fail safe for the cooling system. You can also purchase new bellows and thermostat parts from various vendors including Automobileatlanta.com and Awesomepowdercoat.com.

    its actually pretty simple: If the engine begins pinging (detonating), when it normally does NOT, then the engine is overheating. The most common cause is a broken/stuck thermostat on the engine fan control flaps.

  • @dewder74
    @dewder74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm sure that I'm going to get slammed for this comment, but I don't care. I've studied the type 4 engine for a long time and speak from experience when I say that Ed was incorrect when troubleshooting the overheating issue with this particular Porsche 914. If the thermostat is fully expanded, when it is cold, then the thermostat failed; the thermostat for that car is designed to open when it fails to ensure that the engine won't overheat; it will just take longer to warm-up. And Ed's using the wrong thermostat; the new thermostat that Ed is using will NOT open when it fails; so the car will overheat if the thermostat fails. Ed says that you can't buy original 914 bellows(thermostat) anymore; yes, you can; you just have to know where to look; There's a company out there that is making new thermostats for the Type 4 engine; other companies are selling refurbished bellow style thermostats too. Ed simply got lucky while working on this engine. The real culprit, for the reason why this engine was overheating, was that the cable, which connects the thermostat to the flaps, fell off of the pulley and was stuck. When properly set up, the Porsche 914 does NOT need a extra oil cooler.

    • @chrisst8922
      @chrisst8922 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I thought that when I saw the programme originally.
      I think that oil cooler was fitted because somebody mis-diagnosed the original problem. I think the owner had done a lot of it himself probably with the best advice he could get. Someone who reckoned they knew all about Beetles.
