I really appreciate how he takes his time with his answers. He really thinks about what he says, instead of just saying something right away to look more professional.
I love that too. I wish it WAs socially more acceptable and normal that people pause if they need to think longer. I always do but I feel like people become impatient with me. So I only take my time around friends.
I believe that he is not reliant on thought to formulate his answers. He is connected to his divine self which is all knowing. His answers are wisdom from the heart; not mind.
Tolle is a genius. His recommendation that the guy listen 80% of the time while speaking 20% of the time is reasonable, but the idea that the guy attend to his hands while listening is brilliant. As a psychologist with over 30 years of experience I always find something useful through Tolle's talks, and this is something I will be able to implement with some of my clients.
the man asking the question from Eckhart seems like such a beautiful person, such a warm energy he gives off. I can very much relate to the hyperactive state. I'm not always in that state but very often when I'm nervous and talking to people, it happens
Mari Lember. Yes he's both conscientious and very much self aware, Great tools for enlightenment, though they may seem to be the bane of your life at times, in reality they're a great gift.,
I'm so grateful that this video was posted! The man expressed my lifelong issue, and I found Mr. Tolle's answers & thoughts to be so helpful & encouraging. As an older person going back to school, I was diagnosed with ADHD, but as a child, I was just considered an annoying troublemaker and often punished for talking in school. I do not want to take meds and found this video to be a God send. After many months of reading the books and watching videos like this one, today I felt an epiphany and am overcome -even as I am typing. Many thanks!!!!
I can sense his gentleness and kindness. He definitely is in another dimension of mental state. I pray we may all attain the divine the presence the Buddha nature the divine whatever term we called it.
I can't work out why there are 200 or so "'thumbs down"'--This is wonderful advice from one of the few people who really knows about humanity. Eckhart explains things better than anyone i've ever known.
Good to remember that ppl with ADHD spectrum brains are very prone to self criticism and self loathing, so more encouragement and acceptance of how one operates is more important than actual 'stillness'. His possible social anxiety might also make him more self critical. More encouragement & micro steps towards mindfulness the key....he took a huge risk by asking, good for him as it gave voice to countless others who think they can never be mindful or present!
Be present, conscious and aware, without thinking. "Life moves pretty fast. If you dont stop to check on it once in a while. You could miss it." -Ferris Bueller. Become aware of when thinking is unecessary and when it is necessary. Until then you are on auto pilot. Your reactions, impulses and habits control you, its rooted in identification with thinking and your judgements associated with it. Once you are aware of that, you can break it and make different and or more appropriate decisions, you will enjoy your life more, until the point when you enjoy every moment because you accept the differences and circumstances of the world around you. Not resisting it because you dont agree (peace). We are not truly living our life until we understand this. The understanding is awareness not knowledge.
I was very much like this young man, it didn't bother ME, but it did irritate everyone around me, and they told me so. So, I took many years of my life to learn to listen. It didn't come easily; I often left the room to avoid spilling over into someone else's conversation and space. Listening is so much nicer, and now decades later, it is the easiest. People say things that they otherwise wouldn't, if someone else were talking! Imagine that!
Appreciate every moment of being here. Practice paying attention of staying still, and do not worry of the future or regrets of the past. Recognize your breathing and do one thing at a time.
Mind chatter is just the way the way the ego tries to strengthen itself. Its constantly trying to divide and protect. This is being human, no way of getting around it until you bring presence to it. Our judgments are just feeble attempts at strengthening ourselves to protect ourselves from death. Ask yourself the next time you judge a person for whatever the reason is..why? the answer underneath it all is so the ego can get stronger. The ego is the disease but I think its also the whole purpose of us being here...so we suffer, so we understand the contrast between being at peace on the other side and here feeling alone and divided. There's no defeating fear, anger, sadness, anxiety, depression...there is just presence and acceptance and for me its all about believing that we choose to be here on earth, to learn. No of us are really alone, we just choose to be human to learn, then die and be with those we have loved for ions. Then likes dummies we do it again...and again...and again until finally the ego is no more. What Eckhart teaches has been taught for centuries, he's just simply tapped into it like syrup from a maple tree. The Buddhists have known this for centuries, same with many other cultures.
Best way to quiet your mind is to think of your next thought. The mind will go blank and this will allow you to be very present. If you are a beginner, this will last for 3 to 5 seconds. I've sustained it to last for more than 20 seconds. It takes practice.
along similar lines...instruct the mind to think as much as possible and as quickly as possible for the next few minutes/defined time ....try it and you can't think ☺
Me and eckhart have SAME BIRTHDAY!!!! after just looking up on web I almost start crying, Idk why... but I starting to really enjoy his teachings and I feel now more connection seeing we have the same birthday, 💘
Somewhere along the line we all hear about becoming "free from thought" while we meditate, and it becomes a goal. Often we sit down to meditate and we immediately start thinking: "I hope I don't think too much... what if I think too much? Have I failed? Do I have to start again? I'm really useless compared to other people" etc etc. We turn our body into a stress state, which is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve! I would say to this man to just accept that he thinks, and that maybe sometimes he thinks a lot. And not to be afraid of that; not to make it wrong. Just allow the thoughts to be there, it's ok. You are ok. And the same goes for being chatty, don't make that wrong either. He has overthought it and he's compared himself to others who are quieter and assumed they are somehow "better" than him, and that he needs to be "fixed". If you chat a lot because of anxiety, making chatting wrong will just create more anxiety for you. Allow and breathe. You are not broken, you do not need to be fixed.
Also I would suggest that anyone who struggles with sitting quietly meditating, to instead start with doing a craft of some sort. Something that takes deep concentration and while focused on say sewing, or woodwork, to at times bring your attention to your breath and relaxing your muscles as you work.
I have the same problem, I have ADD so my mind is always hyperactive and takes over constantly. There are times I can feel this inner energy and I think i'm 'aware' but this doesn't last for long until the mind takes over again and next thing I know days went by while I was unaware. I used to set a timer that went off every hour with a meditation bell, it kinda helped me to stay aware more but over time this bell became less usefull because my hyperactive mind would block it out. Very frustrating, I can totally relate to this person.
I do this also and have for years now tried to perfect the art of listening and questioning rather than letting everyone know how smart i am about everything haha :)
I have the same problem as that guy, I'm terrible listener and just can't stop talking. There are always new ideas coming up in my head. Even when I'm walking in nature.
~~ Thoughts are like water, stopping them only makes you all wet. ~~~~~~ When a thought, an idea, an unexpected message from the universe visits, thank and ask for more. ~~~
Thank you for this. I can relate to this gentleman. I have anxiety and this too can create a hyper active mind. I have learned so much from your videos as well as your books. I am still currently reading "The Power of Now", but I have purchased the other two books and will definitely be reading those when I am done with the first one. Hopefully one day I can attend a retreat. Thanks again for all your work.
Feels more like a vehicle than a prison to me. Just remembered that about 20 years ago I had the same thought. Now I think it depends on the attitude. Trust the journey.
My problem is the exact opposite,I don't engage in conversations and I rarely speak and it's not because I'm listening or being present but because of the same reason:mind noise
veto Corlioni try to disassociate with the mind noise. They are not yours. Don't identify with them. When you see a thought arising, feel it, let it be, feel the emotions it causes, all as an observer, not as the creator. That realization is enough to break any identification with the thoughts. Remember, the life situations are not depressing, the thoughts about them are.
I think you could use the same technique as explained in the video. There's something he says in the book about listening with your whole body, be totally present while the other person speaks. People love to be heard, you don't need to say much.
veto Corlioni personally i feel the same way and the way i become more present is by engaging in conversations helps quiet down the mind. And i can be engaged in whats in front of me
Me too. I've got better at talking as a result, but it can get exhausting. Our culture revolves around it too much, and most people feel ashamed of quietness
My mind races when I'm reading chapter books, studying for a test, or taking an actual test that have a timer. I have a million thoughts racing through my head. During timer exams, my mind is all over the place. 30mins into the test, are my mind having thoughts about timers, counting down the time on the clock. Ugh! Smh

Hi you from Việt Nam ,nice to know your channel. I have ever read 2 your books . That excited
I was reprimanded by my boss during my 12 monthly appraisal for being hyperactive and looking into my work to deeply. This observation is difficult to accept as it is an observation of my character. I have to learn that the work doesn’t need my full characteristic energy to be completed. How to chanel my energy in the world is difficult.
The only way to be relieved from the anxiety and worrying in this world is to have the Holy Spirit come and live inside you. Then you are born again, able to see the truth of what this world and reality are all about. Our purpose in life becomes clear and knowing that Jesus Christ’s death on the cross has paid for all of our sins once and for all frees us from the bondage of slavery and eternal life begins the moment we are saved - by faith - through God’s grace. Since death has no claim on you anymore, what else could you be worrying about? Jesus is the way the truth and the life, no one can go to the Father except through Him.
Eckhart is so genuine. With the recent documovie on Osho etc I looked up about other fake gurus. There was a website where Eckhart was criticized, nothing true, nothing substantial at all. I believe I can tell that Eckhart is honest. He's not a grasping, greedy man at all and seems to practice what he preaches. I used to go to a Power of Now meeting in Birmingham, England and I was surprised to see that a lot of the members were into the teachings of Osho.
All he needs is a rude person to talk to. Someone who will always disencourage him after his input. The sting to the ego will create a hesitation and he will gradually regain power to choose wether to talk or skip the answer. Plus it erodes ego
Brave guy and standing up and explaining in front of everyone.
Good on him.
A Tolle a day keeps the doctor away ❤️🌻
I love how he can sit in silence comfortably while deeply contemplating his answer. I wish more people would do that
I really appreciate how he takes his time with his answers. He really thinks about what he says, instead of just saying something right away to look more professional.
KingBotan I think Ekhart pausing before answering is going to his inner knowledge.
Listening to Eckhart is enough to quite the mind. Meditation starts happening on its own. No effort
Sailendra Pamidi so aptly put!!! His voice calms my anxiety in a matter of a few minutes!
agreed

Well done for having the guts to stand up and asking this question, I feel exactly the same.
Even his silence while he’s contemplating his answer is very powerful
Eckhart Tolle saved my life! I was in deep depression before I knew his teachings.
Just listening to him for a few minutes give me great presence. 🙏🏻
same to me, bless you Sarah :-)

Mari Lember That's because he's from Yorkshire 🙂
Mari Lember, I can't lie, listening to him speak makes me feel good inside lol. Seems so genuine.
Thanks for nice comments (Iain in the video)
This is the sweetest conversation ever
I love "stumbling upon" exactly what i need to hear
Ekhart has the most hypnotic voice ever

The calming of the mind requires tremendous effort yet provides unbounded satisfaction. It remains an everyday goal for me.

That is so true Farid. I see this with my clients. A lot of self-judgment. Breathing techniques help too.
thanks for existing, Eckhart

Clicked this by impulse. Many of us adhd or any form of hyperactivity can relate. The advice given by eckhart us solid. Abosultely love Eckhart!

, Truly, everytime I hear Eckhart and see him even if it's through a screen I just feel love...
I love those pauses :D
A beautiful soul.. if only people like this ran the world...❤️❤️
To the man who asked this question - thank you so much for asking it.

Tiffany Mathis of course, think of the next thought and you'll see that your thoughts disappear

I learnt this from Alan Watts' lectures, it works!
My next thought is: what will my next thought be, why am I doing this, and then I imagine explaining that to another person.
Such a great conversation. Always grateful for Eckharts teachings.

Just listening to Eckhart makes me present ❤️. Imagine being in a relationship with eckhart. It must be so tranquil 😂. Love you Eckhart ❤️.
Thanks Echart. God bless you. You are the man.
What a beautiful man! And a beautiful simple, compasive answear! 😊🙏🌸
Excellent advice. Delivered with great calm & compassion.
Thanks for your very valuable advice. 75percent of my suffering has come to an end.
I love Eckhart. He is an inspiration :)
i came across his videos by the advice from one of my friends. This' what actually i need.
Give complete freedom to your mind "voluntarily" and your mind litreally shuts down.
Sir Eckhart is very good,he cleared all our doubts thereby i wanna say be in present and dont have wrong identifications in your mind😊😊
Eckhart. Greetings from Barcelona, Spain. I would like to thank you for your very interesting contribution.
I have the same problem, I have ADD so my mind is always hyperactive and takes over constantly.

King Chief
Lol lol. Too frekin funny!
I am going to give this a go :-) thank you for your kindness, Eckhart.
5:56 common wisdom but brilliantly explained by ET
The fact that he pauses before replying suggests how deeply he thinks over everything
Such good advice, listen more than speaking!
I have the same problem as that guy, I'm terrible listener and just can't stop talking. There are always new ideas coming up in my head. Even when I'm walking in nature.
My gratitude for Tolle is endeless
Love it! Love it! Looooveee!! Love you Eckhart! You are the Profet of our time! #Love&Light

This really helps me. I am similar to that guy. Have a very active mind.
Eckhart says nothing but everything at the same time!
My hyperactive brain is driving me crazy trying to wait for this gentleman’s to finish
Music to my ears...🎼🎵🎶🎸
The answer is you don't quiet your mind, the more you try the harder it becomes
I believe this on an intuitive level, Ensiferum Fan. Sometimes I wonder if I made it up.
