I met Aaron Neville in 1993 at an airport in Roanoke, Virgina. We had the same flight, and he sat next to me on a 2-hour flight. We had a great chat; he was very gracious and kind. I didn't ask him for an autograph; the conversation we had meant much more than an autograph he could have signed. Plus, I thought it would be crass.

Linda lives here in San Francisco. We have mutual friends. She won’t sing anymore,in public, due to her very sad ailment. However, she still has a beautiful voice when she sings with her family. She would wrinkle her nose and say “oh,that’s no kind of voice “… She is beauty through and through…I love her comment…”I had a good long drink at the trough “ I’m satisfied…Thank you, this was a good one🎶
It made me smile to hear that she still sings with her family...thank you for sharing that. And thank you, Linda, for being that constant voice of beauty and inspiration to so many of us through the years. ❤🎶❤
One thing to note with Aaron is that he's baritone who sings high in his head voice and in his falsetto. As a tenor, if I want to cover him, I actually have to take the tune up about a fourth so I can slip in and out of my head and falsetto. It took me a minute to figure that out. I'm friends with his sons, Ivan and Jason and they both have lower voices.
I saw the Neville brothers in a small concert venue, The Coach House, San Juan, California. My date bailed, but heck no way was I going to miss them performing. Their voices filled every nook and cranny in the room. During their break, they came to the bar,, said they saw me sitting by myself, bought me a brink. Giving births to my 3 kids, and spending a few minutes with the Neville bros.,, life well lived! I'm truly blessed. We all are blessed to hear those voices.
This is my absolute favourite duet...two fantastic singers with such distinct voices, blending them perfectly to create 3 minutes of magic. When we're talking about duets, it's never gotten better than this. Thank you for this analysis, and explaining exactly what's going on in this performance to make it so sublimely exquisite.❤️🇨🇦
Thanks, Fil, for doing another piece involving Linda - she could harmonize with anyone (and did) and she genuinely enjoyed singing with others more than she did solo. She could slot that magnificent voice into whatever part would best compliment the other singer. She has also said that Aaron has “the voice of an angel” - who WOULDN’T want to sing with that 😍
Her “Trio” albums come to mind. I read her autobiography, she writes several times about the joys of having singers over and just sitting on the floor and harmonizing with them. It was very definitely an earliest memory of hers to have extended family members harmonizing together at the end of the day. Touching on their relationship with each other, it is delightfully shown to have been strictly professional. Upon winning the Grammy, a very nervous Mr Neville said he wanted to thank Linda first, then apparently his mind went blank, and Linda whispered something in his ear, he continued by saying “…and my wife Joel”. Absolutely adorable.
After they finished recording this song in the studio, Aaron said to Linda "See you at the Grammys." He was right and it was well-deserved. Also, in terms of their relationship---they respected each other as musicians and people, and had spent time rehearsing this song before they recorded it. When Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper sang "Shallow" at the Grammy ceremony, some people were saying "Oh, they must be in love." When asked about this, Lady Gaga said "It's called 'acting'." Same here---all of these people are professionals and they know how to put across a great performance.
They won a Grammy Award in 1990 for this song and in 1991 for “All My Life”. Their voices match perfectly. His voice is so unique and has been around for sixty years. “Tell It Like It Is” as a young man with the Neville Brothers. Aaron and Linda sang an album together in “Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind” where these songs appear. Just magical ❤
I think this was at the Grammy Awards ceremony, and this is where he was so nervous accepting their award, that she had to remind him to thank his own wife.
Can't ever listen to this duet without getting a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. Thanks for this analysis Fil. I hadn't heard this song in years and forgotten how it pulls out every bit of heart and soul out of me.💙💙💙
Gives me goosebumps every time I hear this. I love the way Linda laid back and let Aaron shine. She could have blasted her loud voice, but she held back to let Aaron's' beautifully unique voice stand out.
I live in Tucson, AZ, where she is from. She's royalty out here. In my opinion, her voice is perfection. She probably could make an autotune machine self-destruct just out of shame. Is autotune a machine? I don't actually know. 😂
Love it, I have always thought Aaron Neville has a sort of instrumental quality about his voice, he's like an clarinet in human form, well in my head anyway 😂
I recorded this complete Grammy Show on VHS tape when it was broadcast, with all the commercials taken out of course, one of the best Grammy shows ever broadcast IMHO. I mainly recorded it because Paul McCartney was to receive the Life Time Achievement Award that night and it was presented to him by Meryl Streep. The talent, the music may have been one of the last great Grammy Shows ever broadcast. This VHS tape still plays and sounds just like I just recorded it, love me some VHS linear stereo tracks. This Grammy show was also hosted by Garry Shandling, he was great. Oh, also that night was the night Bonnie Raitt won 6 Grammys for the "Nick of Time." A lot of excitement in the air that night!
Great songs are timeless. Plus, Linda was one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the stage. And, her talent was limitless. I envy Aaron's good fortune to able to look into Linda Ronstadt's eyes and sing to her. Kudos to both for a great song masterfully performed!
Though I'm clearly in the minority here, I'll say I've always DISliked voices like Aaron Neville's (and Barry Gibbs', and Johnny Mathis'). I'm not trying to persuade anyone -- JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION. Now, thanks to Fil, I finally know what the quality I dislike is called: "tremolo." (I've heard the term before but didn't understand what it meant. I always learn from Fil!) Those tiny intervals of breath instead of note sound to me like something is missing, kinda like a radio voice when the station isn't properly tuned in. Glad I watched this, if only for that reason. I fully appreciate the beauty and control of Ronstadt, AND her generosity to other singers with whom she performed.
Thank god, he was an awful 'singer'...he basically talked this song and shook his voice...rubbish, linda ronstadt on the other hand was streets ahead of him.
I’ve never been a big fan of tenor voices but Aaron Neville has a beautiful voice and so does Linda Ronstadt. Together they’re magical. I love this song.
Best thing ever said on Linda Ronstadt's talent was when Pat Benatar won the Grammy over Ronstadt and she said something about how can she be the best singer when Ronstadt is still alive?
One of the most beautiful duets. Both have fabulous voices. Linda's first big hit was in 1967 "Different Drum" with The Stone Poneys. Other hits were "Hurt So Bad", "You're No Good", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado", "Tracks Of My Tears" etc.
Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind. One of my most favorite Linda Rondstadt albums of all time. I remember seeing this on TV when they performed. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ So gorgeous!!!
This gives me goosebumps! This is such a beautiful duet. Two incredible voices! Aaron's voice is so unique and Linda's is one of the best of our time! Thanks, Fil for this treat!
Love him separately; Love her separately but together they move my soul! This is one of my all time favorite songs. Great analysis, as always. This one was a good one Fil! Thank you. 🥰
Hi Fil, This is such a beautiful song! Aaron’s voice is so unique and at times does remind one of the Bee Gees. And Linda’s voice is pure magic. Together they give this song so much feeling and emotion. Just a wonderful performance and a fine example of singing at its best! No pitch correction, no auto tune. Thanks for the guitar demonstration too, always love to here you play and sing. You Are Amazing, Thank you so much for all these great analysis videos. Debbie☮️
Great way to describe Aaron's voice. His voice is unimmitatable. I love both these singers. Thank you, Fil. I always enjoy your analysis. Your joy for music is infectious ❤❤❤
Another great analysis, Fil. I have been a fan of Linda Ronstadt ever since Different Drum was released. Even though her voice could blow anyone out of the water if she wanted to, she respected those who performed with her and let them have the vocal spotlight if the song called for it. And, yes, she and Aaron dated from '89 to '92. ♥
Hadn't heard this in many years. Hearing this now brings me back to those good times. I loved it so much & could listen to it over & over for hours. Those beautiful voices sound like angels. It's so beautiful. Thank you Fil for bringing back beauty & talent. 💕💞💕
Linda Ronstadt has the prettiest voice I can think of. My family was picking out songs to put on an mp3 player for my dad to listen to in the care facility he's in right now. Linda had to be on it (specifically her "Canciones de Mi Padre") And Aaron Neville is truly distinctive, with so much soul. What a great combination.
I remember this performance. I was 13. Rewatching as an adult. I’m grateful I grew up with so many talented musicians, that used their voices, or instruments as enough. No big productions. No crazy lights, dance numbers, etc. just the music.
I recall an interview with Linda Ronstadt long ago where she said Aaron Neville had the voice of an angel. I agree with Fil that there is mutual respect here and they come to each other in the song. Aaron Neville has what I would call a delicate nature to his voice and Linda Ronstadt has a powerful rocker voice. It is so amazing how they can bring together these two incredible voices to make a beautiful duet. Nice pick, Fil. I enjoyed the guitar discussion as well.
There was always something about that live version of the song that I couldn’t quite put my finger on until now. Obviously Aaron and Linda have unbelievably unique voices which blend seamlessly together but I never fully understood how significant the roll the musicians/orchestra played in making this performance as special as it is. That guitar solo illustrates perfectly how controlled playing compliments the artists and the song rather than over powering it. Great video as usual. Thanks for posting.
Very impressed you let it play. So many radio dj's cut off the ending that is the best. End of Onion song, Toto's Rosanna, fantastic guitar solo. I get annoyed when they talk over the end. I was waiting for you to cut it off. Impressed you had the sensitivity to react. The end of this song is exquisite.
I remember this moment in my life watching this. It was amazing the first time and hearing it again gives me chills. His voice is just so unique and amazing. I absolutely love them singing together. ❤️❤️👏👏👏🤩
You are so right! How could you interrupt this duet! Your analysis always helps me to understand WHY I have always loved these songs, performances. PS I also love watching YOUR reaction.
Loved the album they did together in 1989 Cry Like a Rainstorm Howl Like the Wind. It had such a big sound. It’s one of the most beautifully recorded albums ever.
I was there and saw this performance in person!!! It was at the 1990 Grammy's at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Seeing and hearing them perform this live was magical. Such a beautiful duet!!!
Fil, my husband was with Mitch Ryder of the Detroit Wheels. He was his lead guitarist for almost 20 years. Sadly he died last year. I've had to sell all of his guitars and most of his amps. I still have 4 vintage Fender amps to sell. The primo one is a 1959 tweed twin. I also have a 1961 Concert that Bo Diddley borrowed and signed the back in 81. We usef to watch you together. He thought you were awesome and so do I. He used to tell me I had the ears of a dog. Like you I can here everthing. I can't sing or play like you but not many can. I loved this video.
Really enjoyed this analysis, Fil! Love the duet and often play it. I remember when all the boys wanted to be with her, and all the girls wanted to be her! Brilliant!
Man, you hit your breakdown on the head! I said "Mutual Respect" at the exact same time you did! I believe Ms Ronstadt sought out Mr. Neville, to feature him on her current album, at that time. He is unbelievable and she is just EVERYTHING! This is how you duet. Brought tears to my eyes, it is so beautiful.
So many wonderful comments about these great singers. They are wonderful people too. Thanks, Fil, yet again for doing justice to this beautiful performance!
This is such a lovely song beautifully sung , their voices go so well together. Linda's voice worked well in a duet, Somewhere Out There, is another really good example. A sad loss.
I have such an appreciation for your talent to explain the subconscious emotions as it relates to music and the journey of memory in notes. What a gift in communication of the how we process the feelings versus the theory of looking at notes and playing them. These two are very gifted vocalist but together this duet does make you see they we enmeshed in the song.
I think this is one of the best analyses you have done Fil! Much like this performance, there is just so much in there with your analysis. This is a great performance of a beautiful, emotional song. The explanation and demonstration of Aaron Neville's voice and what makes it so distinctive was really enlightening. Showing how these two pros blend their voices so well also gives you a new appreciation for this overlooked skill. Plus the demonstration of what it would sound like if they didn't was pretty cool too. And then the guitar demo was the cherry on top! Thanks so much for this Fil, well done!
Both amazing voices, and they sound incredible together. I enjoyed your explanation of Aaron Neville's combo tremolo/vibrato, because I've always thought there was something special going on but I was never sure what.
If you haven’t yet had the chance to watch the documentary on Linda’s life “The Sound of My Voice”, it’s the best biographical documentary I’ve ever seen. (It’s free here in TH-cam). In it, she talks about being in New Orleans and a friend invited her to go see the Neville Brothers who were playing in a bar in The French Quarter. That is how she met him and it was mutual admiration.
This analysis was fascinating, especially how they conform to each other stylistically. My son and daughter are both singers and while they have very different tones, they can match vibrato in their duets, since they have grown up hearing each others vocal styles. They sort of become one entity (as an aside, music is the only time these siblings can function as one entity…)
They were a couple for a while, and probably still here during this duet, as is apparent when she kisses him on he lips at the end. What a great duet! A few years later, at some award ceremony, they did this duet on stage again, and she had to remind him to thank his wife, and did not kiss him! So, it would appear that he got married in the interim. But Fil, another great video, and ANYTIME you have Linda on, I will be here! I have an outstanding home theater, which is basically a sound system (7.2), and when I put Linda on (usually a CD) and have a visitor, they cannot believe what they are hearing. Some have commented on how listening to Linda was sending chills up their back.
I thought they had broken up by this point and the chemistry was due to their history, but it's hard to say because different sources give different dates. Most are saying they dated from 1989 to 1992, so probably still together here.
Thank God I grew up before autotune was invented. I always loved the song and remember this performance on an award show (Grammys or AMAs). Back when all you needed was talent and a microphone. No need to AUTOTUNE anything or anyone. Because real singers HIT THIER NOTES. Nuanced and perfect harmony. Better than the record. Pros and legends.
Amen, I agree this is what you call a duet. I still get mesmerized when I watch. The other song they sing together All My Life is another phenomenal hit that stands the test of time like this duet. Such effortless and underrated singers. Just fabulous❤❤❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Aaron has such a vulnerability to his voice. Perfect for the this. Aaron is part of a royal musical family from New Orleans but also did some solo work and duets. You would enjoy checking out some of the Neville Brothers music.

The duet still gets me. Their voices together are almost otherworldly.

That guitar solo illustrates perfectly how controlled playing compliments the artists and the song rather than over powering it. Great video as usual. Thanks for posting.
Love, Love Aaron Neville.
Thanks for looking at this one, such a beautiful performance 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Probably the most beautiful performance of our time, IMO, we had it so good in the early 90's.
First of all, great duet.
Second, great analysis. Both for the singing and the guitar.
Merci beaucoup.
Oh wow Linda's voice is one of the very finest. Have loved her since The Stone Poneys🤩😍💕💖💖
Linda looks so very happy there. 🥰
I remember this moment in my life watching this. It was amazing the first time and hearing it again gives me chills. His voice is just so unique and amazing. I absolutely love them singing together. ❤️❤️👏👏👏🤩
Like always, you guide us into an artist and appreciate their unique gift. No two people had such rich voices. One of my favorite duets.
One of the most beautiful duets I have ever witnessed. thank you for the memories Fil. I love this. I love this song. It is so ethereal.
You are amazing...I am from New Orleans...and I loved Linda when I was young...My teenage years when she was just beginning...I am 64
One of my favorites ever!
I was there and saw this performance in person!!! It was at the 1990 Grammy's at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Seeing and hearing them perform this live was magical. Such a beautiful duet!!!
Lucky you!!
Always loved this song, performed by two great performers. Linda Rondstadt absolutely gorgeious.
Such a beautiful performance of excellent singers. Neither is stealing the spotlight. Music is a beautiful science. Thanks Fil.
Thank you 🙏 great reaction 👍like real vibrate vocal ☝️exactly love ❤concern ☝️song deeply ❤️👏👏👏👋☮️
Really enjoyed this analysis, Fil! Love the duet and often play it. I remember when all the boys wanted to be with her, and all the girls wanted to be her! Brilliant!
BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE, I'VE EVER SEEN ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Man, you hit your breakdown on the head! I said "Mutual Respect" at the exact same time you did! I believe Ms Ronstadt sought out Mr. Neville, to feature him on her current album, at that time. He is unbelievable and she is just EVERYTHING! This is how you duet. Brought tears to my eyes, it is so beautiful.
So many wonderful comments about these great singers. They are wonderful people too. Thanks, Fil, yet again for doing justice to this beautiful performance!
This was really interesting about remembering the notes because of their emotional impact. It's almost intuitive. Thanks Fil!
Absolutely beautiful ❤
You know your revues are an artform in themselves. I've learned a lot from listening to them. You're the best!
One of the most beautiful duets ever performed. ❤
Such a beautiful song
I've seen all the Nevilles many times. Lived in New Orleans for years and years. :)
They are both phenomenal. This song is beautiful and vulnerable.
They sounded great together! Great song!💯
I love Aaron Neville. Dueting with Linda Ronstadt is beautiful, you should hear them singing 'Close Your Eyes', it gives me goosebumps.
Spot on Fil. Great musical dissection for both vocals and guitar. Two great singers/performers being analyzed by the great Pegasus. Thanks. Cheers!
Beautiful❤
Absolute class, and Masters of their Craft!!!❤
I feel so fortunate to have lived in the time and heard the music of Aaron Neville and the Neville Brothers.
