    Folks in the comments are mentioning a Parkinson's Disease diagnosis, but it was mis-diagnosed and Linda now knows she has Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. This mimics PD, but is a different brain disorder. I love that she says, "English was for speaking and Spanish was for singing." That was how she grew up and lived much of her life. All of her music/songs are _increíble_ but I love Love LOVE her _Canciones de Mi Padre_ it's amazing. Live strong, beautiful woman and thank YOU, Fil! Great analysis!

(It was something that was also in her family genes… I think she said her grandfather had the same condition.)

    Fil, my wife and I can't thank you enough for this analysis video. We took her parents to Linda's concert in San Francisco in 1987 and were absolutely blown away. We had been listening to her "Canciones de mi Padre" CD for quite a while already, but her live performance was amazing. Mariachi Vargas is probably the best mariachi group ever, an amazing group of musicians! One thing to add to your awesome analysis was that song was the *finale* to her show, so she had been singing for probably 90 minutes at that point. Thanks again!

  • @Terri_MacKay
    @Terri_MacKay ปีที่แล้ว +65

    A few months ago, I watched a concert of hers from the mid 70's, and a documentary on her Parkinson's diagnosis. The documentary was on right after the concert where we had just watched her belt out hit after hit, and the realization that THAT voice was gone was just heartbreaking.
    Definitely one of the great female pop/rock voices ever...her versions of Blue Bayou, Desperado, and You're No Good are classics. She's had so many hits, it's hard to pick a favourite, but I do love her duets with Aaron Neville...their voices were magic together.

    Linda released the album Canciones de Mi Padre (Songs of my Father) in 1987 to honor her Mexican heritage. The album immediately became a global smash hit. At 2½ million US sales, it stands as the biggest selling non-English language album in American record history. Linda is unparalleled, she sampled many music genres and was a smashing success in all of them.

    Your analysis was a thing of beauty, Fil. I've listened to Linda's songs in Spanish although 3 yrs of Spanish in High School didn't help me understand a word! This genre is captivating because no one knew she could do it, and do it so well. It's like she spent her whole life doing this. I'm happy for her that she stood up to the record label and said, "I'm going to do this!" And the albums sold millions! Bravo, Linda!

  • @King35Fan
    @King35Fan ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Linda’s voice is exceptional in all ways in this live performance: volume, subtlety, technique, perfect enunciation of multi-syllabic lyrics at a rapid-fire rate, and delivering the song in the cultural manner that was not only appropriate to the genre (ranchera) but doing so exceptionally. One doesn’t have talent because of one’s family or how many times one listens to a genre or multiple genres. If that were the case sons and daughters would have as much talent or even more so than their parents. The same applies to siblings. Linda had a gift that she worked hard and consistently to refine. Those who are aware of the challenges within this genre and this song in particular would hear and appreciate each note and breath and stylistic technique regardless of whether or not it happened in a blink of the eye.

    Linda Ronstadt is one of the few singers I've seen who are better live. Her voice is so amazingly powerful in person that I was completely caught off guard. Operatic quality. So her bang on even vibrato shows the power in her voice. Love this, so exciting and fun to watch. I like how she's embracing her heritage and Spanish. I took Spanish but here, in Detroit, it's spoken at such lightning speed it's really hard to follow. Impressive skills with the band. This was a fun one Fil!

    What a fun genre of music always so upbeat and energizing! Linda does an outstanding job vocally on this song. She had some amazing breath control on some of the phrases she was doing. Linda Rondstadt was amazing!! She was so versatile! Could do opera, Country, pop, Spanish/Mexicali music, etc. One of my idols growing up. Her career was like her saying, "I wanna do Mexican music" & the record company resists - then she wins a Grammy for best Foreign music lp. She wants to do big band music, record label resist but she wins & she gets another Grammy, etc. The albums title "Canciones de Mi Padre" translated to English is "Songs for my father." Her dad was Mexican-American & he sang these types of songs. Her mom was German decent. My dad was also Mexican-American & my mom was from English decent. So I can't describe how great it was having a female half Mexican-American represented in the media.

In other words, she is a brilliant vocalist and a perfectionist when it comes to her music and has put the work in to capture every genre she has mastered including country, rock, Mexican/mariachi, big band and operetta. I don't know another artist that has accomplished the level of mastery across genres like LR. I am so thankful for her work and for the joy it's brought to my life.

      Lovely comment. Saw a video of her working with a famous Spanish singer whose name escapes me right now, but he was helping her with the correct Spanish pronunciation of words. She was such a diligent student.

    Cannot express my appreciation more...your explanations and analysis of singers is just so wonderful..and right on...Mariachi singing is very specific...and Rondstadt was fabulous at it. I personally think her Meixcan songs were her best.

    She is certainly the most popular female vocalist ever recorded. She is also one of the most versatile ever recorded. She had never sung traditional Mariachi professionally. She decided to learn the style well enough to record to her standards and she just did it. It didn't take her long. Absolutely world class ability. She could sing any style she decided to learn.

    Thanks for this. I love Linda Ronstadt's singing but I had no idea that she had done these songs. Her ability is just outstanding and she is so versatile.

    What a style flip! Checked out 1 of your two earlier Ronstadt analysis vids, "You're no good"-- same vocal power. Versatility, for sure.

    Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock & even opera. She has Mexican heritage on her dad's side. Growing up she listened to many types of music, including Mexican music, which was sung by her entire family. She does a great job singing in Spanish. I have the album "Canciones de Mi Padre (Spanish for "Songs of My Father"). Sadly she now has progressive supranuclear palsy & can no longer sing a note.

    Hallo Fil, this comment is dedicated to you💞I apologize for my English that is a little bit rusty, hoping I'll be able to explain my thought. I've never seen a guy like you: with a t-shirt of ACDC while keeping time of a Mexican Song!! I followed you in other videos and you look in the same situation, you keep time of every kind of music!!! Your love for music is AMAZING!!! You should teach it in schools, you are unique!!! I esteem you deeply., God bless you and thank you for sharing your passion with us!!!👏❤️🎼❤️👍🤗🇪🇸🇮🇹

    Thanks, Phil, for the analysis of this Linda Ronstadt performance--she was amazing belting out the notes of her beloved heritage along with the accompaniment of the mariachis. One almost forgets her being the one who sang "Long, Long Time."

    Thanks for doing this video! As a long time fan of Ronstadt, I got this album shortly after it was released. Growing up in West Texas, I was familiar with some of these mariachi songs, but was blown away by her rendition of them. It’s been a favorite album, and inspired a love of musicians working outside there normal genre.

    By pure chance I found a copy of Linda`s "Canciones De Mi Padre" album (on which this track features) at a charity shop here in the U.K. just over a week ago in excellent condition for just £1.
    I wasn`t aware of the albums release but just took a punt on it.
    I`ve always liked her voice and been amazed that she`s never been as appreciated here in the U.K to the same extent as in the U.S. apart from the odd few singles that hit the charts.
    I will be seeking out more of her back catalogue to enjoy

    Thank you so so much for this analysis! I still have this cassette and played it repeatedly when it was released. I saw the concert on PBS Chicago and fell in love with it immediately. While I have been a life long fan since hearing "Different Drum" I love this music from her the best! So talented, such a vocal perfectionist and just so pleasing to the ears and eyes of course, she's beautiful. Loved watching your face watching this video!!!

    I never knew Linda was fluent in Spanish. She does sound like a native speaker. I can tell because I speak and have sung in Spanish before. While I am fairly accurate, I cannot roll my Rs like she does. Her voice is impeccable. Her pitch is fantastic. Thanks for another great analysis and an interesting song by Linda.
