Lunar has by far one of the best stories I've seen in ANY media. When I finished it, I thought it's the kind of story I'd like to introduce to my son one day (he was a baby at the time). Now he's 17 and he finished it. :)
I've been playing this game since SegaCD! The story changes a little every remake, but still the same idea all around. I have it on a PSP emulator that I've only tried out for about 20 minutes, but it looks phenomenal!! Oh! And there's a Lunar 2! "The Eternal Blue" Not as good, but still great! IMO.
"Graphics do not make a game." DAMN RIGHT! I would give a thousand likes for that comment alone! Awesome video! While Final Fantasy is a great series, it's nice to see these other games get some attention. I could tell how passionate you are about them throughout the whole video.

I never thought I would see someone mention Thousand Arms. It was my first non-Pokemon RPG as a kid and I really loved the humor of it. I still do, honestly. It has its charm.
"graphics don't make a game." it's so hard to make people these days notice that; they tend to just discard every game that don't have tons of graphics details, with makes them lose really beautiful mastarpieces that deserves recognition. (sorry for my bad english)
Good graphics are easy these days, it is more of an aesthetic choice than a limitation. What is often lacking now is a compelling narrative. I am happy to give up ultra realistic graphics if the story is good.
I think every RPG enthusiast agrees that graphics aren't priority, but we can all agree that it must at least feel like they put honest effort into making it pretty.
You'll like Grandia. It's the spiritual successor to the Lunar series. It's too bad Konami probably won't ever continue the Suikoden series, because the CEO went crazy and only wants to make Pachinko and Slot Machines now.
@@smilinggeneral8870 you just reminded me that I need to finish 5. Now if only the PS5 would be backwards compatible w ps2 games I'd spend a few coin in that bugger!
lunar is still one of my favorite rpgs of all time. it didn't reinvent the genre like ff7 but instead polished the "classic" jrpg to perfection. great story. great characters. great combat. great music. great cut scenes. beautiful 2d sprites.
The list from the video: 1. Lunar Silver Star Story - There is a remake on PSP, available digitally so you can play it on Vita 2. Xenogears - On the PS3 Store 3. Suikoden 2 - On the PS3 Store 4. Grandia - On the PS3 Store 5. Dragon Quest 7 - Remake on 3DS 6. Legend of Legaia - PS1 disc only 7. Star Ocean 2 - There is a remake on PSP, not available digitally 8. Tales of Eternia - There is a remake on PSP, not available digitally 9. Breath of Fire 4 - On the PS3 Store 10. Wild Arms 2 - On the PS3 Store
*PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT* Do NOT play the PSP remake of Lunar, they completely changed the game and story into an unrecognizable mess, please either buy the original or emulate it and do not fool yourself into thinking the psp version is the original game
md ssa - If that were the point we'd have J-Fighters, J-Platformers, J-Adventures, J-Racers, etc... Most fans were well aware of the fact they were Japanese, and most of the rest figured it out when it went from Final Fantasy 3 to Final Fantasy 7; by this point translator, Ted Woolsey was one of the most well-known names in the video game industry.
Great list. Final Fantasy is my joint favourite series of all time along with the Legend of Heroes series, but I love seeing PS1 RPG lists without them. Man PS1 was such an amazing console for RPGs.
FF series always got money so many times they had great graphics but the storyline wasn't always good, best Squaresoft RPGs were other series like Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, Xenogears (sad they put almost all their money in FF8 cause this one to me is the best RPG I've known), Parasite Eve (even if only the 1st one of this saga is really great to me), Valkyrie Profile. These games had way better stories than most of the FF games (7th is a jewel of course).
Idk about my top ten RPGs on PS1 but my top 5 will always be: 1. Chrono Cross 2. Legend of Dragoon 3. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together 4. Breath of Fire III 5. Legend of Mana But with Final Fantasy Games, Final Fantasy 7 and 8 would have taken the first and third slots respectively. But still, great list! Now I'm gonna have to play the games you mentioned and replay the ones I haven't played in years :)
1.suikoden 2 2.Grandia 3.BreathOfFire 3 4.Lunar star 5.TalesOfEternia 6.LegendOfLegaia 7.StarOcean 8.SagaFrontier 9.ValkyrieProfile 10.ChronoCross Your list was pretty solid, and you gave a damn compelling case for BOF 4. Unfortunately 3 wins for me due to nostalgic value.
Star Ocean 2 is such an incredible game. One of my favorite games - ever. The tunes while in Fienal and the Cave of Trials, so good. Also I really enjoyed the music in the Shingo Forest, and Linga.
yeah! So much content in that game and amazing music. I played this game so much for the powerful storyline and gameplay rather than trying to get most of the endings to unlock haha. Dias - 10 seconds!
@@AndrewTheTransformer the thing is, its such a great game they could probably do well remaking it with better graphics. The character development and story is just phenomenal
It's so true. Easily one of if not my favorite jrpg and theres certainly contenders. More people should be aware of this and not the xenosaga series(although it had its charm also).
I disagree and cant understand the hype...the battle system is pointless when you'll only use the strongest attack over and over the mech battles are pretty pointless. The story isnt bad but then again it's not even finished soooooo that's bad and I get its deep and all but the gameplay isnt that good
Jonathan Diosa i agree, RPG's express art better than any other video game genre. Story, philosophy, characters, music...RPG's have it all. Too bad we dont get many good ones like back in the day.
Great list but I'd have put on Valkyrie Profile as well. Some others that are definitely up there are Wild Arms 1, Breath of Fire 3, Alundra, Persona 2, Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3, SaGa Frontier, and Vandal Hearts. PS1 had such a legendary lineup.
Fernando Olivera F Tactics was great, but that is a Final Fantasy title. He states at the beginning that this is a list with Final Fantasy "not" included 😅
I totally forgot about Vandal Hearts, that game was amazing and I don't care what people said about the unnecessary blood back in the day, I loved it. Let's face it, when you get cut, you're going to bleed
For me, my top 10 (minus Final Fantasy games) looks something like this: In no particular order. Xenogears Dragon Quest 7 Suikoden 2 Lunar Silver Star Story Parasite Eve Vandal Hearts Legend of Mana Legend of Dragoon Chrono Cross Tactics Ogre It says a lot that fans can have such widely varied opinions on RPGs for a console. It means there were just a ton of quality games. Though I still say the SNES was the better console from the 90s.
@@piast_kolodziej Vandal Hearts is very likely my very favorite RPG from the PS1. I still play it once every year or so even after all these years and love it from start to finish without ever feeling any kind of lull or getting bored at any point in time. It was my introduction to the Fire Emblem tactics playstyle, even before I played Final Fantasy Tactics.
@@piast_kolodziejAt the time I preferred FFT, but I haven't been able to make myself finish FFT a second time, unlike Vandal Hearts. I guess in the long run I like Vandal Hearts better.
while i do love vandal hearts and tactics ogre, they are not what you would call your traditional rpgs. they are isometric turn based strategy games. like final fantasy tactics. also i kinda think lunar 2 eternal blue is a bit better. then silver star.
GREAT list! Xenogears (obviously from my thumbnail), Star Ocean 2, and Lunar are my 3 top non-FF games on the PS1. Vagrant Story, Tales of Destiny 1 &2, and Parasite Eve would also be on that list for me :)
If it didn't bear the "Chrono" moniker, I think people would appreciate the game more. Visuals and especially music are crazy gorgeous, and it's got high replayability with all the characters. Unfortunately, it gets help up against Trigger and is viewed as an unworthy sequel. Which it really isn't meant to be. It's no Xenogears or Grandia to me, but it definitely gets brushed aside way too often.
@@pablohill6688 I don't need to look it up on TH-cam. That's your defense? A TH-cam video? I saw one of many about a flat earth recently. Lol. It's not a sequel. I finished Chrono Trigger when it came out on 1995. Finished Cross in like 2001. Even the creators will tell you, "it's not a direct sequel." You are misinformed, son. Sorry.
Legend of Dragoon Chrono Cross Vagrant Story Brave Fencer Musashi Parasite Eve 1 & 2 Valkyrie Profile SaGa Frontier Alundra Legend of Mana Tales of Destiny 2
Tales of destiny 2 = tales of eternia Vagrant story, mushashi, PE, Alundra, legend of Mana are all action rpg, which i assumed he didn't include for this list.
zeroangelmk1 Finished that about 3-5x back when i was a kid. I just bought a psp go last week and have finished the game again. It never gets old! "Pear into Peaches!!" Lol.
I played SO 2 sooooooooooo many times, Enjoyed the end game dungeon especially when trying to level up like crazy until I found tricks, like the early game marvel sword and whatnot.
Star ocean is the best! So much replay ability as far as party permutations and “different endings “ and the battle system was awesome. Plus cooking and item creation was so much fun, breath of the wild def took some inspiration from that.
dude, i was there when Lunar first came around, I was just starting to understand video games, then Lunar was introduced to me and then BAM, RPG's became my main genre for gaming, brings back many fond memories lol
I end up watching this video every few months, whenever I decide I want to play a new old JRPG. I missed out on the PlayStation when it was around so this has been a great resource. Thanks!
Grandia doesn't get the love it deserves... Released at the wrong time I feel (same year as FFVII)... I personally prefer it over FVII But thats just me... It is a game I feel everyone should play at least once!
Grandia was a life-changer for me. I adore it so much I named my son Justin. ❤ Also it's getting released on steam soon!! I'm so excited to play it with my kid finally.
Agreed. Personally I'm tired of the massive fan hype of VII. Yes, it was a good game. Was it an amazing game, No. Is it even in the top 3 best FFs ever made? Not even close.
@AllegedPhilo for me disc two just drudges on and on. kinda makes you wish squaresoft spent some extra time to take a loan for disc two, but what i don't understand. is i think the money thing was a tad bit of a lie, considering xenogears came out after final fantasy 7, which was a massive blockbuster. almost like they were holding that money for final fantasy 8.
Agreed for me. Disc 2 may have droned on for some but the over all story is so good and you get some fun dungeons / battles and of course bonus stuff on disc 2 that makes it all worth it.
@@demonpride1975 the director knew how much time and $ he had for the game and just went way overboard with how much he tried to cram in there. i like the story in xenogears but there is quite a bit that was not all that great and could have easily been cut without compromising the main plot. some of the overly silly characters didn't really fit in with the more serious story anyhow so i doubt anyone would have missed them. the story just dragged on for way too long at times and the game could have benefitted in every way by shortening it a bit imo.
I swear. If they could have had the resources to flesh out the 2nd disc it would easily be the greatest JRPG ever imo. Perfect story, music, battle system, art, characters and exploration.
Thank you so much for this. I was so intrigued when the video started. You dropped in Star Ocean 2 and I raised my fists in triumph. I also thought I was the only person ever who played Legend of Legaia. You are a hero. But I have to say, right before number 1 came, I said to myself “If he says Lunar I will scream”. You did, and I did. Lunar is one of the most beautiful experiences I ever had in my life. Thank you for this. Thank you so much.
@@selendile030 I would say that it does hold up, with some caveats. The voice acting (which is rare) is bad, the world's lore can be hard to follow at times, and a few lines didn't translate well. But if you can overlook that, some occasional polygon oddities, and a bit of level-grinding, it's still a great game with a good story and an ending that really pays off well (especially if you stick through the credits for the final-final scene).
Awesome list! Lunar, Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms 2, Star ocean 2, and Xenogears were some of my favorite PS1 games. I have kept most of those along with Tales of Destiny (I preferred that over Eternia... sorry) hoping for some true backwards compatability all these years.
Man, I have never had a game impact me as hard as Lunar did. Everything thing about the game is beautiful and perfect. It didn't need fancy graphics. Everything worked so well together. It truly made me cry when I had to go through the grenary the first time, and seeing all the dragons enslaved and bound to the machines. Even today, after all the games i've played, nothing has hit me quite like Lunar did. I still make time to play through it at least once a year, it's just that perfect. 50/10, will play again and again and again.
I am so jealous you get to experience Lunar whenever you want. I haven't played it since I was a kid but it's forever my favorite game of all time. I had all the dialogue memorized, that's how much I played it haha
I liked Chrono Cross till I found out limited level up. It felt like any hack/slash game. The more you go further into game the more skills you will unlock, but not earlier. I hate those level up limits in a RPG game. That's not how it should be. Well it's what it is. I couldn't enjoy it as most people have
You mentioned Wild Arms, you deserve a like sir. All that 90s japanese glory. That Evangelion character's design in number 1. Awesome video, but you forgot Persona 1 & 2

Chrono Cross is my favorite PlayStation RPG ever. I love the opening, the characters, the soundtrack, the plot, everything in that game looks perfect to me.
I preferred Chrono Trigger over Cross. I played Chrono Cross first and thought part 1 would be terrible because it is on the SNES. I enjoyed Chrono Trigger for the epic storyline, gameplay, and music. There was a decent amount of replay value as well. Part 2 started of well but I didn't particularly enjoy it thereafter. There were soooo many characters to choose from as well!
@@mateus7316 The final boss battles in both games were unique in a way compared to other RPG's. Wild Arms 2 had a different final boss battle as well but nowhere near as difficult as CC haha
Chrono trigger. I get that it was ported late into the ps1’s lifespan and has loading issues, but it’s just such a revolutionary title. An incredible sound track, the unique wait time battle system, the incredible story with great twists and turns and the hands down beautiful sprite work and the official art by Akira Toriyama. It’s a next level game and one of the greatest rpgs to ever release period.
@@redguywins4802 Lunar Silver Star Story was made exclusively for Playstation, and was a Sega CD remake. Chrono Trigger for PSX was a port of the SNES. You are wrong.
Legend of Legaia is the 1st RPG I ever played & is still one of my favs. Star Ocean 2 is by far my #1 pick though, I remember be blown away by the crafting & was totally addicted to it!
@@DemetriusRicon legend of dragoon? i thought for sure dragoon was gonna be #1. seemed far more likely that it being completely missing from the top 10.
I agree, Lunar Silver Star Story Complete and Eternal Blue Complete are both amazing. I remember really feeling for the characters and being able to relate.
Lunar and Grandia are easily two of my favorite games. I replayed both of them to the point of having to get new copies. The Wild Arms series was also amazing, pity 5 turned out how it did. Saga Frontier is also up there for me, it certainly has it's flaws, but the story hidden in it, and the battle system that I just loved getting lost in was completely worth it for me. Only other game on my mind is Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together. The story for that game just hit me hard and I loved the fights even if they were on the long side.
And all the saga, Xenosaga were good too, but Monolith Soft never got much money to do these games on good consoles, so they made them on hand-held ones :(.
Yeah, what XG needs is a re-mastered disc 1, and a fully-fleshed-out disc 2. And 3 & 4, or put it on a pair Blu-Rays, because the way that story was crafted, you would need at LEAST that much more space to encompass the rest if it were told properly.
Symphony of the Night Legend of Mana Chrono Cross Thousand Arms Valkyrie Profile Parasite Eve Legend of Dragoon Alundra(very underrated) Just a few good ones not mentioned people may have missed...
Man, you managed to list all the games I loved so much. Xenogears, Grandia & Lunar were my best together with FFVII. You forgot on Vandal Hearts and Vagrant Story, but great video.
legend of Dragoon along with Beyond the Beyond need to be mentioned too... hell, Playstation was an RPG powerhouse.... probably still is looking at a lot of PS2, PS3, and even PS4 exclusive games...
Probably cause its awful when compared to Trigger. That damn terrible story and battle system. It was when Square started focusing more on production quality than over all good games. FF8 suffers from this too.
Clesarie while I agree that it's not better than Trigger, i think it's a really good game in its own right and very unique. It's personally my favorite of the two and I still say Trigger is the best game I've ever played.
Great list. Grandia still, to this day is one of my absolute favorites. The soundtrack (Skywalker Sound) was greatly composed. The magic & skill system was fun and rewarding to develop. The characters were very well developed. It it me almost felt like taking part of a really good Anime. It gave me the same feeling playing it as if I was watching a Studio Ghibli film.
Grandia is my first jrpg when i was kid. So special, that mystical athmosphere in temples and archeological theme, this adventure and characters. So great. I didnt found any other rpg like this to this day. Gonna try Lunar , look like he have the same vibes
YES! Lunar: SSC is one of the best games of all time imo. It will forever hold a place in my heart. You chose right for number one and only people who played and finished the PS1 version specifically will understand.
it took me a few times to get into it, the opening just seemed too childish to me and i quit playing before getting very far. after seeing everyone say how great it is though i forced myself to get further in and it did eventually start to hook me.
Legend of dragon is stunning by legend of legaia is what made me fall in love with rpgs. To this day it remains one of my favorite games. So good!!!!!!!!
Damn, this brings me back... I used to almost exclusively play single player RPGs on PSX, it was amazing stories and worlds it was like reading a book but better. Loved Grandia and Star Ocean 2 so much, Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross I wish was also on the list.
Chrono Trigger was an SNES port, it should not be on the list-- it was part of an SNES collection of games on PSX that were direct ports (aka nothing about it utilized the PlayStation except VERY brief CG cutscenes, and the loading times and HORRIBLE audio quality actually made them worse than the SNES originals) Chrono Cross I would agree with you though, it was a glaring omission on this list.
I've been rebuilding my PS1 library lately, and specifically focusing on RPGs. This list helped point out a couple games I wasn't aware of yet. And also got me nostalgic for some I love, like Legend of Legaia and Breath of Fire 3 and 4. Just subbed and added a couple other of your RPG related videos to my watch later list.

Chrono Trigger (Well it originally from SNES, but I will put that on this list since I play it on PS1) 4. Final Fantasy series (since I like several FF game, I combined all of them instead) 5. Tales of Eternia 6. Breath of Fire IV 7. Lunar 2 8. Valkyrie Profile 9. Brave Fencer Musashi 10. Legend of Legaia Honorable Mention 1. Persona 2 2. Grandia 3. Xenogear 4. Chrono Cross
How is Xenogears just a honorable mention????? How is it not number 1 or at the very least top 3 on every single freakin' "Top 10 best RPGs on any console of any era ever made"??????????? Also, Chrono Cross should easily be top 3 no matter what. IMO tops Trigger in everyway (except for the character design and the artist responsible for it (go DBZ, don't have time to look up his name again.)) ..Don't get wrong. Fuggin' love Trigger, buuuuuuuut it don't compare with its little bro.
If Xenogears was remade with the same dedication and financial backing as FF7: R , It would be hands down be the best JRPG ever created. Only problem It truly had was financial!
it would be turned into an action game and broken into 3 or more games just like ff7 remake. i miss the ps1 days when you got huge, complete games and they didn't milk the hell out of them like they do now. and since so many people accept and even defend this, it's just gonna keep getting worse.
Ibrahim Aydin: The grinding and backtracking may not be for anyone, but it's a well-made game. It's quite strategic, and the overworld is pretty detailed for a PS1 game. Glad to see another fan here (currently playing it). ^^
#1 really belongs to Suikoden II, as it is one of the greatest games ever made. I don’t know what a lot of you guys have against Chrono Cross, but it deserves the #2 spot. Xenogears was a great game, no doubt. But the truth is that it was an unfinished project and literally rushed to meet a deadline with limited resources to complete. Chrono Cross trumps every aspect of Xenogears except maybe for the direct plot (because even CC’s story was paced infinitely superior) and the large ensemble of characters. By the time you finish Solaris and defeat Grahf or Id or whatever, the rest of the chain of events to transpire is told by Elly sitting in a chair with multiple transitions of screens filled with dialogue, like a picture book. Also, the song ‘Invasion’ is used WAY too much throughout the game and gets extremely repetitive at times. Don’t even get me started on the platforming element squaresoft tried bringing to the table. You had to use a 2d model character in a 3d environment to jump around in. Luckily, the game doesn’t punish you as much with this gimmick until you reach the ungodly Tower of Babel. What seemed to be a multi-leveled Mario stage with moving and disappearing platforms only brought pain and misery when you add the fact that falling doesn’t kill you, but revert you to ground zero. It is commonplace for you to trigger a random battle mid-air as you’re jumping AND falling. The field controls are stiffer than a motherfucker as well. And people say Chrono Cross was bad because the battle system was too complex. STUPID!!
I'm SO glad you mentioned Lunar! I completely forgot about that series, and just discovered I still own the two PS1 Complete boxsets. Time to dump the discs and play them again!!
I'm a die hard final fantasy 7 master however I must say if you haven't played Breath of fire 4 or Xenogears, then DO SO RIGHT NOW... shit is just insanely legit on so many levels.
Xenogears could have been easily one of the best rpg's of all time, then the 2nd disc happened... ugh. And I agree, we need a sequel, and saga stuff doesn't count, not even close! Lunar, when it came out for the sega cd, was definitely the first one that had animated cut scenes, you didn't see that stuff for the time period, Lunar 1 & 2 are still to this day fantastic, I still go back and play them and xenogears because they are just great!
Thanks for this. I played most of these growing up, and I'm glad I got to be there for the golden age of JRPGs. I distinctly remember being confused as games trended further and further away from this style, when the naive me thought that they would just keep getting better. Not that there aren't tons of incredible games out there today, but I used to think that this style would become more evolved and better as time went on, rather than just dying out completely.
I had the box set for lunar 2. It had the medallion you could wear. It had these little pop up cardboard cards of each character. It had an artwork book too. Man I totally forgot about that. Takes me back to my childhood.
don't get me wrong most of those games deserve to be on any top 10 list. but what about breath of fire 3, alundra, wild arms 1, suikoden 1 just to name a few.
Hey David, your video created a nostalgic moment for me, thank you for that. You touched on many of the classics. Dragon Warrior was a great game. I'm surprised it did not take off like Final Fantasy. Squaresoft (Square Enix) made the best back in the day. I grew up with the Sega Master System, NES, SNES, N64, PS1. I left the Nintendo platform for the PS1 when Squaresoft did because those were the games I played. Some of my favorite RPGs of the old (the consoles I mentioned above) are : Secret of Mana, Chronotrigger, FF1, FF2, FF3, FF4, FF8, Faxanadu, Zelda 1-2-3, Legend of Dragoon, Dragon Warrior 1 and 2, Vagrant Story, Quest and Chrono Cross. Those were the days of great…
I’d switch Legend of Dragoon with Dragon Quest VII but I never played DQ7 and I played every other game on the list so maybe biased haha. This list is spot on.

"graphics don't make a game." it's so hard to make people these days notice that; they tend to just discard every game that don't have tons of graphics details, with makes them lose really beautiful mastarpieces that deserves recognition. (sorry for my bad english)
And nowadays many of the action games are called RPGs just because you can upgrade your level, it's sad.
Good graphics are easy these days, it is more of an aesthetic choice than a limitation. What is often lacking now is a compelling narrative. I am happy to give up ultra realistic graphics if the story is good.
Graphics can hurt the experience if they get in the way of the gameplay. But otherwise, I agree to a point.
I think every RPG enthusiast agrees that graphics aren't priority, but we can all agree that it must at least feel like they put honest effort into making it pretty.
Adam Downing that's a contradiction.
Suikoden 2 is the greatest! Gonna have to give Grandia a try since the main character is named Justin, lol.
iLankie 18 Same here.
Grandia 1 is the best its series. Youll love it from beginning to end
iLankie 18 The only ones I dont own are 4,Tactics, and Teirkries, from what I've heard I'm not missing anything from 4.
You'll like Grandia. It's the spiritual successor to the Lunar series. It's too bad Konami probably won't ever continue the Suikoden series, because the CEO went crazy and only wants to make Pachinko and Slot Machines now.
Hands down suikoden 2 are the best among all!
Suikoden II is one of the best RPG's ever made.
john tracy I agree everything about this game is epic.
5 is also on par with 2
I especially like the sequence where you finally kill Luca Blight. Fuckin' epic.

It's one of the first Jrpgs. It's literally the one game and Eternal Blue whom I forgive their power of friendship trope because they started it.
The list from the video:
1. Lunar Silver Star Story - There is a remake on PSP, available digitally so you can play it on Vita
2. Xenogears - On the PS3 Store
3. Suikoden 2 - On the PS3 Store
4. Grandia - On the PS3 Store

10. Wild Arms 2 - On the PS3 Store

Grandia Remake coming to Switch and PC.
could you emulate them?
Do you know if the Lunar remake is playable on PSTV?
*PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT*
Do NOT play the PSP remake of Lunar, they completely changed the game and story into an unrecognizable mess, please either buy the original or emulate it and do not fool yourself into thinking the psp version is the original game
That what J-RPG golden era was. No DLC, NO Microtransanction, No Hantai Over sexualised for $$$. Thats the RPG i want that it.
Hentai? what you're talking about, there's literally ZERO jrpg in consoles with explicit sex, i think that not even sex at all.
Kind of ironic because the term "J-RPG" didn't really come about until the following generation. Back then it was just RPG, no J needed.
more like all hentai LOL
@@Seekarr BC most of the players back then didnt know those games were made in japan. Same thing happened with some old anime like heidi.
md ssa - If that were the point we'd have J-Fighters, J-Platformers, J-Adventures, J-Racers, etc...
Legend of Heroes so underrated! Amazing stuff
I appreciate Xenogears being on the list let alone making number 2. Got it when it came out, still have it, and still play it.
This is a good list, I would have just moved the top few slightly to:
1 - Xenogears
2 - Suikoden 2
3 - Lunar
Idk about my top ten RPGs on PS1 but my top 5 will always be:
1. Chrono Cross
2. Legend of Dragoon
3. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
4. Breath of Fire III
5. Legend of Mana
But with Final Fantasy Games, Final Fantasy 7 and 8 would have taken the first and third slots respectively. But still, great list! Now I'm gonna have to play the games you mentioned and replay the ones I haven't played in years :)
How dare u make legend of dragoon #2? that game seriously is the best of all time
Final Fantasy 8 was super mediocre and was huge disappointment after FF7 (luckily though they made up for it with FF9).
@@reconss5290 can you tell us why it would be number 2?
I recently played the these games. That feeling, you can never outgrow ps1 games.
1. BOF3
2. Chrono Cross
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Xenogears
5. Lunar
1.suikoden 2
2.Grandia
3.BreathOfFire 3
4.Lunar star
5.TalesOfEternia
6.LegendOfLegaia
7.StarOcean
8.SagaFrontier
9.ValkyrieProfile
10.ChronoCross
Your list was pretty solid, and you gave a damn compelling case for BOF 4. Unfortunately 3 wins for me due to nostalgic value.
Lunar the silver star is one of my all time favorite games. Amazing story.
Don Pena and characters toó ;-)
Good game but the story is a little too romantically involved for me. A lot of the dialogues alienated me and got me bored.
I bought a PlayStation and Lunar. Many rpgs would follow but that game was great and I have some fine memories of it. The sequel was good too.
Didnt this have a massive collectors eddition with a huge box and like 5 discs? I remember drueling over it at an import games store.
Legend of Legaia is one of my favorite and a cult classic!!! 😍😱👍🏻
The best!
I still follow the teachings of Biron to this day--defeat your enemies...with LOVE!
Damn right!
Yes this!!!!!
This game needs remake in switch or PS5. Pure gem, yet severely underrated
@@resistorstudios 100%! There weren't many RPG's around that time with voice acting as well.
How do you like the remake?
@AndreasRunge999 its nearly perfect. Alot of changes though. You are gonna have to play it
Xenogears! My favourite game, what an overlooked masterpiece
Agree
It's so true. Easily one of if not my favorite jrpg and theres certainly contenders. More people should be aware of this and not the xenosaga series(although it had its charm also).
Xenogears, Legend of Legaia, Star Ocean 2nd.... So much awesome!
Such a shame that Square cut the budget.
I disagree and cant understand the hype...the battle system is pointless when you'll only use the strongest attack over and over the mech battles are pretty pointless. The story isnt bad but then again it's not even finished soooooo that's bad and I get its deep and all but the gameplay isnt that good
RPGs are the best genre.
Jonathan Diosa i agree, RPG's express art better than any other video game genre. Story, philosophy, characters, music...RPG's have it all. Too bad we dont get many good ones like back in the day.
plenty around bloodbourne, skyrim, witcher 3 to name 3
Paul Jones Skyrim is not an RPG.
whatisthis131321213 hmm....
I think they call that a Western RPG
Jonathan Diosa no, vampire the masquerade, bauldurs gate, fallout etc are western RPGs. Skyrim is an open world dungeon crawler.
Oh no doubt, I'm sure I could make a top 20 list and include those as well. The SNES, PS and PS2 had such great RPGs - I miss those days.
Vagrant Story is such a surprisingly great game...
Lee Ball yeah valkyrie profile one of the best beautiful game, but also final fantasy tactics and of course the legend of dragoon..
For me, my top 10 (minus Final Fantasy games) looks something like this:
In no particular order.
Xenogears
Dragon Quest 7
Suikoden 2
Lunar Silver Star Story
Parasite Eve
Vandal Hearts
Legend of Mana
Legend of Dragoon
Chrono Cross
Tactics Ogre
It says a lot that fans can have such widely varied opinions on RPGs for a console. It means there were just a ton of quality games. Though I still say the SNES was the better console from the 90s.
Vandal Hearts is one of my favourite games of all time. Definately in top 5 with Panzer Dragoon Saga, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid and Shenmue.
@@RicoLen1 After finishing VH many times I sold it. Then I have bought it again. This game is addicting:)
Which game do you prefer - VH or FFT?
@@piast_kolodziejAt the time I preferred FFT, but I haven't been able to make myself finish FFT a second time, unlike Vandal Hearts. I guess in the long run I like Vandal Hearts better.
while i do love vandal hearts and tactics ogre, they are not what you would call your traditional rpgs. they are isometric turn based strategy games. like final fantasy tactics.
also i kinda think lunar 2 eternal blue is a bit better. then silver star.
Actually it was Xenogears that moved me to tears.
GREAT list! Xenogears (obviously from my thumbnail), Star Ocean 2, and Lunar are my 3 top non-FF games on the PS1. Vagrant Story, Tales of Destiny 1 &2, and Parasite Eve would also be on that list for me :)
brndn31107 parasite eve was a great game. I mention it to my friends and no one knows what it is. But i remember .. Lol
yes Parasite Eve 1 and 2. and also The 3rd Birthday in PSP
Played Suikoden 1-5, 2 being my favorite. Great series as well!
No one ever mentions Valkyrie Profile
Phil Massecar Trop sous estimé ce Valkyrie Profile malheureusement....
You did, so there you go
It has a time limit doesn't it? I dont like it. And the story is confusing.
iCantPickaName but the combat was sooooo awesome!
the time limit is like the modern staminagame nowadays :b well at least it bring you to the end of the game instead "out of stamina"
CHRONO CROSS my favorite of all...
@@frozenaorta actually its a direct sequel to chrono trigger look it up on TH-cam for an explanation on it
@@pablohill6688 I don't need to look it up on TH-cam. That's your defense? A TH-cam video? I saw one of many about a flat earth recently. Lol. It's not a sequel. Vagrant Story
Brave Fencer Musashi
Parasite Eve 1 & 2
Valkyrie Profile
SaGa Frontier
Alundra
Legend of Mana
Tales of Destiny 2

No Suikoden on the list? Downvote.
Lol i know all of this games and played them yay!!

I'm glad Star Ocean 2 made your list. It's a tragically underappreciated game IMO.
zeroangelmk1 Finished that about 3-5x back when i was a kid.
Couldn't have said it better... if they did a remake/remaster for ps4... I'd be in heaven...
I loved Star Ocean also. It had many elements of Star Trek in it.
Star ocean is the best! So much replay ability as far as party permutations and “different endings “ and the battle system was awesome. Plus cooking and item creation was so much fun, breath of the wild def took some inspiration from that.
Ps1 is the heaven of jrpg

Snes too 😍

I end up watching this video every few months, whenever I decide I want to play a new old JRPG. I missed out on the PlayStation when it was around so this has been a great resource. Thanks!
Grandia doesn't get the love it deserves... Released at the wrong time I feel (same year as FFVII)... I personally prefer it over FVII But thats just me... It is a game I feel everyone should play at least once!
So so sooooo true!
True the only thing is the voice over.
Grandia was a life-changer for me. I adore it so much I named my son Justin. ❤
Also it's getting released on steam soon!! I'm so excited to play it with my kid finally.
Totally agree, spent hours playing Grandia great music, the story line to it and hours of gaining your moves. Very under appreciated
Agreed. Personally I'm tired of the massive fan hype of VII. Yes, it was a good game. Was it an amazing game, No. Is it even in the top 3 best FFs ever made? Not even close.
i have played all of them. those memories are irreplaceable

Dude lunar 1 and 2 are my favorite rpgs on the ps1. So happy this video happened
I liked the Sega CD versions better. I liked the game mechanics better.
+TheVitaGamer yeah the Sega CD console itself is around $110 on eBay if you are lucky. Lunar 1 is around $90
Xenogears still tops all of them even with a incomplete disc 2
i disagree while i do love xenogears, that second disk really destroys the immersion of the game.
Star ocean 2 having 80 different endings.
Me: I've found the legendary one
Lunar Silver Star Story is the best game ever made!
I liked eternal blue better
Thank you so much for this. I was so intrigued when the video started. You dropped in Star Ocean 2 and I raised my fists in triumph. I also thought I was the only person ever who played Legend of Legaia. You are a hero. But I have to say, right before number 1 came, I said to myself “If he says Lunar I will scream”. You did, and I did. Lunar is one of the most beautiful experiences I ever had in my life. Thank you for this. Thank you so much.
I was going to mention "Legend of Dragoon" as well. Even until this day, I could replay it over n over.
agreed legend of dragoon is a masterpiece.
I just finished Disc 2 last night. My third playthrough--2000, 2013, and now.
@@hawaiianshirts4715 does it hold up? I’m almost afraid to replay it because I’m afraid my love is purely nostalgia.
Damn, hearing the Breath of Fire 4 music hit me hard with nostalgia.
Good list, good games. But I missed Chrono Cross and Legend of Lagoon
Spielewelten don't forget Valkyrie Profile
I liked Chrono Cross till I found out limited level up. It felt like any hack/slash game. The more you go further into game the more skills you will unlock, but not earlier. I hate those level up limits in a RPG game. That's not how it should be. Well it's what it is. I couldn't enjoy it as most people have
yeah those 2 definately would be near the top of my list, along with vagrant story
Legend of Dragoon?? Great game for sure! Maybe the most underrated rpg of the ps1 era imo

Lunar was my first rpg I actually connected with the characters and was really engaged in. So I'd have to go with Lunar as being #1 on my top 10 list.
I would like a remake of xenogear
I would buy a PS4 just to play a remake of Xenogears and a do over of the awful start to disc 2.
And all the saga, Xenosaga were good too, but Monolith Soft never got much money to do these games on good consoles, so they made them on hand-held ones :(.
It's not possible anymore but i'd like that.
Remastered 👌
Remake 👎
Yeah, what XG needs is a re-mastered disc 1, and a fully-fleshed-out disc 2. And 3 & 4, or put it on a pair Blu-Rays, because the way that story was crafted, you would need at LEAST that much more space to encompass the rest if it were told properly.
Symphony of the Night
Legend of Mana
Chrono Cross
Thousand Arms
Valkyrie Profile
Parasite Eve
Legend of Dragoon
Alundra(very underrated)
Just a few good ones not mentioned people may have missed...

pretty sure Beyond the Beyond was a Snes game that was just put on PSX it had a decent story but the graphic couldd have been done on Snes
Solid list, just really sad to not see Chrono Cross
Probably cause its awful when compared to Trigger. That damn terrible story and battle system. It was when Square started focusing more on production quality than over all good games. FF8 suffers from this too.
Clesarie while I agree that it's not better than Trigger, i think it's a really good game in its own right and very unique. It's personally my favorite of the two and I still say Trigger is the best game I've ever played.
Chee Rpgg Yeah man I love Chrono Cross and FF8.
Clesarie ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY? FF8 is top 3.. You must be losing your mind. Most people who say this couldn't beat it.

Grandia was better than 2 and 3. The game was longer and had more happen in it
I love Grandia on PS1.

it took me a few times to get into it, the opening just seemed too childish to me and i quit playing before getting very far. after seeing everyone say how great it is though i forced myself to get further in and it did eventually start to hook me.
Chrono Trigger was an SNES port, it should not be on the list-- it was part of an SNES collection of games on PSX that were direct ports (aka nothing about it utilized the PlayStation except VERY brief CG cutscenes, and the loading times and HORRIBLE audio quality actually made them worse than the SNES originals)
Chrono Cross I would agree with you though, it was a glaring omission on this list.
SUIKODEN PSX SERIES IS THE BEST RPG GAMES I PLAYED EVER !!!!!!!

How is this going? I feel like it’s gotten to the point where you gotta be very well off to do this!
@@opaljk4835 Haven't been able to keep up on collecting too much lately. I hit a lot of second hand stores and such, you'd be surprised how many gems you can find if you're persistent enough.
@@joshgillam5130 I hear ya! Lots of thrift stores around me got hip to games being valuable and started charging more than retail classic gaming stores. I’m not paying 40 bucks for Forgotten Worlds on the Genesis. I think it’s a general problem with thrifting now, because they want to take in the money but they don’t want to people to possibly resell. It sucks, but I’m also tired, I used to go thrifting every day. My friend moved recently and gave me a copy of Breath Of Fire 3, and some N64 carts, which was a nice little score. You get anything good?
Fel inlove with Suikoden 2 along time and ago and it still has a spot in my heart .It's 2019 and this is so nostalgic. Good times.
My top 10 PS1 RPG
1. Suikoden series (especialy Suikoden 2)
2. Legend of the Dragoon (my first RPG)
3. Chrono Trigger (Well it originally from SNES, but I will put that on this list since I play it on PS1)
4. Final Fantasy series (since I like several FF game, I combined all of them instead)
5. Tales of Eternia
6. Breath of Fire IV
7. Lunar 2
8. Valkyrie Profile
9. Brave Fencer Musashi
10. Legend of Legaia
Honorable Mention
1. Persona 2
2. Grandia
3. Xenogear
4. Chrono Cross
How is Xenogears just a honorable mention????? How is it not number 1 or at the very least top 3 on every single freakin' "Top 10 best RPGs on any console of any era ever made"???????????
Also, Chrono Cross should easily be top 3 no matter what. IMO tops Trigger in everyway (except for the character design and the artist responsible for it (go DBZ, don't have time to look up his name again.))
..Don't get wrong.
@@Jack_80 Facts
Lunar is the absolute shiniest hidden gem in the RPG world
Digimon World 2003 was reallyyy goood too
Ibrahim Aydin Finally someone mentions this
Please Leave
Ibrahim Aydin: The grinding and backtracking may not be for anyone, but it's a well-made game. It's quite strategic, and the overworld is pretty detailed for a PS1 game.
Glad to see another fan here (currently playing it). ^^
No you didnt
Its for kids
Star ocean 2 is one of my favorite games ever
THERE'S A PS4 VERSION?!
Vandal Hearts 1, Suikoden II & Front Mission 3 are the best RPG games i ever played!
STUPID!!
I started Suikoden 1...trying to play without a guide though
My rpg ps1 favs are: Legend of Mana, FFIX & Chrono Cross
Brigandine and Vandal Hearts getting no love. I still play them to this day.
Brigandine!
Legaia 1 and mostly 2 for PS2 are masterpieces
Legend of dragoon is awesome
I'm SO glad you mentioned Lunar! I completely forgot about that series, and just discovered I still own the two PS1 Complete boxsets. Time to dump the discs and play them again!!
"Literally nothing is better than Xenogears what is he thinking?!?!? ... Oh, LSSSC huh... yeah he's right.."
I'm a die hard final fantasy 7 master however I must say if you haven't played Breath of fire 4 or Xenogears, then DO SO RIGHT NOW... shit is just insanely legit on so many levels.
I think the same.
I loved xeno gears until I got to the tower of babil and had trouble making the jumps due to the bad camera angle
Legend of legia and then follwed by grandia great list
Thanks for this. I played most of these growing up, and I'm glad I got to be there for the golden age of JRPGs. I distinctly remember being confused as games trended further and further away from this style, when the naive me thought that they would just keep getting better. Not that there aren't tons of incredible games out there today, but I used to think that this style would become more evolved and better as time went on, rather than just dying out completely.
:(
Star Ocean 2 is my favorite classic rpg from the playstation era

they are amazing games.
Xenogears
1. legend of dragoon
2. xenogears

8. vanguard bandits
9. alundra

Jade Cocoon is so underrated.

Exactly, probably that short, but the breeding aspect, makes the game very playable and does not bore.
I had the box set for lunar 2. It had the medallion you could wear. It had these little pop up cardboard cards of each character. It had an artwork book too. Man I totally forgot about that. Takes me back to my childhood.
Same. I owned that same box set. It was a great experience. It even came with the ost on its own disc.
My top 5 🥰😍
- grandia
- breath of fire
- chrono cross
- legend of mana
- legend of legaia
legend of dragoon!
Sees Lunar... "A man of culture!"
I absolutely loved that game
don't get me wrong most of those games deserve to be on any top 10 list. but what about breath of fire 3, alundra, wild arms 1, suikoden 1 just to name a few.
Wild Arms 1 isn't as good as 2 by faaar, but I can see your point on the others
This all my RPG games so sad never mention Chrono Trigger , Chrono Cross, Threads of Fate, Saga Frontier too but this line up not bad lol
