I agree with most of the comments. I do just the 1st valve half down, maybe a bit of the 2nd valve, too. Start high, but go UP first, then fall. Do lots of experimenting to try to disguise the fact that it’s a trumpet making that sound. I also found greater success shaking the horn in-and-out, not up and down. It makes a wider variation in the pitch during the gliss. Never heard a really good whinny on any of the popular recordings….
I experiemented as well: 3rd valve half down (ride it according to the sound you want) projected best for me on a 180S37 Bach: ...but you have to go for it with every thing you have to get it out there with the projection of a real horse. Wow are we trumpet nerds
TIP: Pushing the 1st valve half-way down gives it more sound. Also, I prefer to use your fingers to push the valves half-way down just so that it doesn't get messed up when shaking the trumpet. (Sorry if I didn't explain clearly)

Perfect timing. We are playing Sleigh Bell in orchestra this year.

Lady sings the blues, weakens the heart but strengthens the soul
“The practice of performing weird shit on the trumpet” lol
I was just practicing Sleigh Ride when I got a notification for this video
While I may understand the concept of a horse whinny on trumpet, this helped me with knowing the process of practicing it. Thank you for the tips.

My audience in high school thought someone got hurt 🎉
To add realism, I start on an E, quickly slide up to a G and then down as usual, all with shake.
Nice!
Brb, time to go be a horse
Have fun!🐴
I do it with the first valve, I find it easier and louder to play lol
I play valves 1 and 2 almost half way down, and valve 3 half way. I get a louder, non-pinched, sound that way.
Interesting, i’ll have to try that!
