  • This is another video on my series "Walks in Dorset" accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I take a 4 mile circular route starting & finishing in the pretty village of Pentridge.
    After a quick look at the church (where I parked my car), I head North along a footpath bordering a field that is next to the ancient Dorset Cursus (one of the largest prehistoric monuments in the UK & in many ways one of the least known). I continue up Bowling Green Lane, looking out for hares in the open fields, towards the Martin Down Nature Reserve.
    In reaching the Reserve, I head East along the side of the impressive Bokerley Dyke (a 3.5 mile structure originally built in the late bronze / early iron age) towards the top of a ridge. At this point the walk follows the Hampshire / Dorset border. At the highest point of my walk I get to enjoy some stunning views across Hampshire.
    I then head South, back in to Dorset, initially through the Blagdon Plantation and eventually on to Pentridge Down. From there I experience yet more magnificent views , looking back down in to Pentridge. My route then takes me to the Penbury Knoll Iron Age Hill Fort - for more amazing views - before following part of the Hardy Way (a long distance footpath) back in to the village.
    I have made this video, on a voluntary basis, in partnership with the Chase & Chalke Landscape Partnership which is a National Lottery Heritage Fund Scheme to protect & enhance the special landscape of the Cranborne Chase & Chalke Valley through twenty projects focused on the natural, historical & cultural assets of this important area.
    The Chase and Chalke Landscape Partnership covers part of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or AONB. The AONB is within easy reach of Salisbury, Bournemouth and Poole and covers 380 square miles of countryside overlapping the boundaries of Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire & Somerset. The AONB website is cranbornechase.org.uk/ , do check it out as there is plenty happening, including opportunities to volunteer on a wide variety of projects, plus events and activities to get involved with from monitoring flora and fauna to art workshops, as well as the chance to protect and promote the region's dark night sky."

    Hi Dave, Just been waiting for the right weather to do this walk as it is just down the road from us. Went on Tuesday - great walk and lovely views , quite a lot of shade along those paths which was good. The churchyard in Pentridge is part of a nature/wild flower scheme and is now full of waist high flowers. Thanks to you and Logan.

    Another really nice walk Dave. I like the first photo of the hare it shows how they can see backward with the position of there eyes. I also like your information on the history of that beautiful ancient landscape.

    I’ve heard of Cranbourne Chase, but I didn’t really know exactly where it was. Interesting thoughts about the Jubilee Trail, once again all new to me. 10k race? Rather you than me, but good luck in that. What it is to be a young man! Wonderful views in almost every direction. How on earth did you get Logan on top of that trig point? I’m always impressed by Logan’s obedience, which no doubt down to you. Thanks Dave for a really wonderful walk.

    • @DaveFord
      @DaveFord  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Lionel. Yes, Logan is a good lad. He has his "Pre Beginners" Obedience title and indeed will be competing at Obedience shows during the Summer this year.
