WALKS IN DORSET at CHAPMAN'S POOL

  • In this episode of my series “ Walks Dorset” , I take a “Winter”walk to Chapman's Pool. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
    I start my 5 mile circular walk from the free car park located to the West of the village of Kingston (which is about 2 miles South of Corfe Castle). Heading southwards, I wander through “The Plantation” before meeting a ridge where I get to enjoy some stunning views over the Encombe Estate (including an Obelisk!).
    At Houns-Tout Cliff , there are some splendid views to be had looking over to the West including Swyre Head (the highest point on the Isle of Burbeck).
    I then head East, following the South West Coast Path, down some steep steps to a valley before initially heading inland and then back towards the sea, to approach Chapman's Pool on the Eastern side.
    After negotiation a “challenging” path, I finally make it to Chapman's Pool Beach - a super place to look for fossils and to enjoy a wander.
    I make my way around to the far Eastern side of the bay to check out the old fishing huts (that once housed a lifeboat in the 19th century).
    My homeward leg takes me on a footpath along the side of a hill, back to Kingston where I finish my walk at the Scott Arms. The pub has a beer garden at the back with incredible views of Corfe Castle in the North.
    I should point out that there are a couple of sections on the walk that are very steep and indeed on the final path to the beach there is a rope to assist folk with going up AND down on the route. If you do struggle with walking on uneven ground and steep gradients then it probably is not the walk for you. It is also important not to get to close to the base of the cliffs that surround Chapman's Pool as there are regular rockfalls.

    Hi Dave and Logan 👋🏻 Walking with you both is a wonderful relaxing time . Love how you show us so many aspects of the area you walk in. The history behind each area is amazing and we all learn so much . The views are spectacular. What beautiful homes to see. Kylie would be pleased to see you put that picture up Dave. 😀

    In the 70's we spent family summer holidays camping near Swanage and visited Chapman's Pool a few times. There was a car park at the top and the path down to the beach followed the stream until one year there was a massive landslip and it was closed off to the public. On a hot summer's day it was a proper suntrap, the gentle sea breeze hid the effects of the sun and on one occasion around half of us ended up with sunstroke. Lots of lobster faced campers spreading calamine lotion on themselves.

      What a lovely story - thanks for sharing it. It can be very peaceful down on the beach there as it is not the most straightforward of routes down (or back up!).

    Well, alas part of that downward path that strained your knees is no more, it passed away in natures landslip back in Nov 23, made a nice slope though, but they still have not repaired it maybe the landowner does not want them shifting it on to his patch for insurance reasons, although have seen people going down and up that way regardless. Lovely video of everchanging landscapes it is nice that such history is recorded, good job.

      Thanks Lee. Hope your trip goes well. I expect that the path down to the Chapman's Pool beach will be slippery / muddy after all this recent rain. There is a "firmer" track that goes down to the "Fishermen's huts" on the Eastern side of the beach (you would need to scramble across some rocks from the huts to walk back along the beach) but I am not 100% sure if it is a private track or if there is general public access on it as it doesn't show as being a public footpath on the OS map (so I will just point it out as an observation!).

      @Lee-jf9cc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveFord Thanks for the advise. I think we're all excited for the scramble down the muddy steps that you climbed down! If that goes how I think it will, I expect we'll be covered in mud taking the walk of shame back up firm route😂

    Dave, I was assured by a local I met in Kingston one day whilst on a ramble, that Houns Tout is actually pronounced Houns Toot. Now I'm not sure if he was just pulling my leg or if it's correct. Just saying. Your walks make me both happy and sad. Happy because they bring back memories of walks carried out by a younger version of myself, sad because I'm no longer able to do them. However the work that you put into the research, and the camera-work and narration more than make up for any sadness on my part. And Logan is the icing on the cake (we all know the real star of your videos!) I agree with you about the 'Compass, surprised you didn't drive around. Last time I ventured into the Scott Arms, I quickly ventured out again having seen the price list, for beer and food 😲

    I hate to think how many times you had to go up and down those steps to get the walking by shots!! I love Chapman's Pool but have never been brave enough to actually go down to beach as I believe the path down is seriously sketchy. I have walked past that obelisk before on the way to Swyre head. A super area to walk in but very hilly! Thanks for video - loved seeing Logan exploring the beach.
