Amidst all his turmoil in the mid 60's, when he made the record "River Deep, Mountain High" with Ike and Tina Turner, it was done in England where they became international stars and the record hit #3, but when it was brought to the US, it only charted at 88. It was at that time he became rather reclusive and withdrawn around the late 60's. I look forward to your part two. Thank you.
What a thorough accounting of Phil Spector's highly disturbing behavior. I've read alot on him through the years and your podcast gave the most interesting slant by far. That gold coffin....! Looking forward to part two.
I think Phil Spector thought he was untouchable.. and he was so full of himself.
When he was around John Lennon he figured out he wasn't at the top of the 'star' chart. Lennon was the center of attention even when Phil was around. Same with George Harrison.
Spector did a drug dealer cameo at the beginning of the film "Easy Rider."
That's very important part of the movie as i watched it for the 1st time in 2005 and missed that part of the movie when I rec it on video I never knew what was inside the motorbike lol,until my dad told me . Made it more clear when I got it on DVD with documentary DVD as well .loved the soundtrack.

Pihl Spector was diagnosed as being paranoid/ schizophrenic by a psychiatrist when he was young, so even at an early age, Phil knew he wasn't normal by any means!
You're forgetting his competitor... "Bang records" with the logo of a gun on each record that said "Bang". I knew the man that was the originator of the label , but under sudden extreme pressure put on him had to sell it "suddenly" . The very early records (Jukebox Kings) business was mob-owned that turned syndication. .. those early days were rough .
So 'BANG Records' had a gun for the logo. Wow, who would've thought. That's neither here nor there. Nice attempt, though

At someone’s house I was in charge of playing music with some big CDs (Phil spectre) …the owner came over and asked if I was going to turn the cds over to play the other side…oh my life…I was so embarrassed…I didn’t realise they were called vinyls, I’d never seen them before! lol
I remember in 1958 I was moved by to the radio hit "To Know Him Is To love Him". I identified with the song as being about familial love rather than romantic love. I was only 11-12 years old. Years later, when I learned the history of the song I understood more about why I interpreted it that way. It still makes me sad to see Phil's father's gravestone.
Great video… one of the things you mentioned was the use of compression in the “wall of sound” recordings. There was so much sound pressure level (SPL) going onto tape that they HAD to compress it in order to master the records properly. If the master recording is too loud, the grooves on the record made by the mastering stylus would be too deep and too wide, making them unplayable.
Specter did that John Lennon “ Rock and Roll” album so loud that a lot of the recordings were distorted and unusable. He like a lot of signal, which was always in practice in the old analog days, the “ signal to noise ratio”.
All you have to see Phils wigs and know something was up.

@ROOTSMUSICHISTORY Love these short docs. If not already on your list of notable people to cover, I think everyone would love one on the extraordinary record producer Robert "Mutt" Lange. I'm still intrigued with his work on Def Leppard's Hysteria album. Though he has many fans, Mutt hasn't done many interviews during his impressive career. Just a thought... Thanks!

I heard from Ronnie’s book Be My Baby that When Phil and Ronnie were adopting he made Ronnie wear pregnant clothing with a pillow underneath to appear she was naturally pregnant.

Those girl group recordings from the halcyon days of Phil and the Wall sound pretty distinctive and iconic man.
I've never been a fan of Sir Paul's work. He certainly knows his way around a studio, but I'm much more partial to John and George's songs.
I wouldn't call Wall of Sound a fad so much as something that was tied to the tech of the era it thrived in. Spector found a way to make effective use of the limited recording technology that presented well on the limited reproduction technology of that era, which was noisy and limited range AM broadcasts on limited range speakers. Got to give him credit for that. He was also oriented towards working with vocal talent and session musicians where he could pick songs from top songwriters and have unchallenged control of the production. He was unable to learn how to continue that success as the technology advanced and didn't adapt well to the era of self-contained bands that wrote and played their own music. He just got paranoid and insecure, which made him toxic. if he'd pulled a gun in the studio on some folks, he might have had it grabbed out of his drunk-assed hands and been punched out cold, which probably would have done him better than all the clinical psychotherapy in the world.

First time i heard of Phil Spector was because he produced End of the Century of the Ramones and it's my least favorite album of my favorite band.

He was fully nuts by many accounts. Unfortunately anyone, regardless of their mental state, has a democratic right to deadly weapons in the USA.
Let it Be should have been handed to George Martin to produce. Martin made all their other albums sound great. I have no reason to believe he wouldn't have made Let it Be sound great too.
Kurt Cobain was suffering with addiction problems, not the same level of carrying weapons or being violent like Spector. Cobain didn't own a gun until the last few weeks of his life.

I met Mr Phil Spector.
#1 Phil Spector is a nut job who should have never carried a gun, that said
#2 nobody should ever carry a gun in a bag in a safe. That would be a dead man's gun. How are you supposed to protect yourself if it takes 2 minutes to deploy??? Oh give me a second Mr. Armed Robber I need to unsip my bag, drop the bag, take out the safe, enter the combination, take out the peace, drop the safe then point (praying I had a master grip) and finally action. That would be what we call in the real world "fantasy land" and absolutely impossible because you'd be dead.
The guy is creepy and his gun in studio threatening people past got him convicted.
He was mentally damaged but sensitive artists are.

It was that when the gunshot in the girls mouth happened if he had done it Phil would be covered in blood
They called it “blowback” so since his clothes were not covered in blood he could not have killed the girl, she did shot herself.

Ronnie Spector would go to the mental ward just to read a news paper. Phil produced the Ronnettes and George Harrison and Sue’s George for plagiarism My Sweet Lord/ Be My Baby. So George bought the Producer rights to settle the matter.
George bought the catalog that included the publishing rights to 'He's So Fine' because that's the song he was being sued over. It wasn't a Ronettes song, nor produced by Spector. Phil wasn't the one that sued Harrison. Ex-Beatle manager Allen Klein sued him. George bought 'Bright tunes music corporation' from Klein to settle the matter.
