After the last experience, I couldn't think straight without getting back in the water! Decided to go back to get some abalone in a safer way. We went at low tide and were able to find them in very shallow water. It's like a whole other world under water! We saw a lot of fish and more Abalone than we imagined.

I dove for ablone and rock fish for 20 years first eight non stop. I used tanks to find the big lings ( 28 )pounds and free dove for the ablone. I really enjoyed your video I hope you have as much fun as I did. When you start free diving in the 20 foot range you get into the inner space. Swimming thru kelp is like swimming thru trees. With the look in your eyes joy in your speech you will be a fantastic free diver. Be safe and keep loving the water.

Wow! 2 feet of water. Thats crazy. Here in Victoria, Australia the rule is they must be in at least two metres of water. It would be cool to get them while standing in knee deep water though. Enjoy. Abalone are delicious when prepared correctly.

We had to be tuff in the 1980's. Surf mats, paddling, (no scuba allowed), limit of 4, buddy system, eyeball before prying them off the rock with the tire iron. Sneak up quietly. If they sense trouble, they suck on so tight that you cant get them off the rock without tearing the shell off. We had to pee in the wet suit to keep warm. So peaceful quiet to just flow through the wavering tendrils of giant kelp. I'd be in heaven already if I stayed too long. Water was freaking cold. 55 to 60 degrees. visibility 25 ft on an excellent day, 10 ft normal. Really hard work for 4 abs, some halibut, few crabs. Really great company.

Hey man, thanks for the informative (and responsible!) video! Glad to have you in the underwater explorer's club. Here's an interesting tidbit for you: do you know why you have to take the abalone you remove (as long as it's big enough)? Unlike humans and some other animals, their blood doesn't clot. And they almost always get a small cut on them when you're trying to slide the spatula under to remove them. If you put them back wanting a prettier shell or a bigger abalone, they are most likely gonna bleed out and/or die of an infection!

When I was 12 I went to catalina island. took a small boat out with my step-dad. we stopped at a rocks that where above the water. we had snorkeling gear no wet suit. he asked me if i could swim down to the rocks below. I think it was about 15 feet down where i got ahold with my hands, but I was actually hanging on an abalone. I pulled it off and stared swimming back up to the boat. when i looked out to se my surroundings I saw a group of hammerheads swimming close. Freaked me out. I told my step-dad ... but all he was worried about was the abalone... such a dickhead, but it was one of the coolest things I ever did as a child.

Kabuto is either one of or a mix between a horseshoe crab (which is a chelicerate) and/or a horseshoe shrimp (which is a crustacean) and/or a trilobite. Those are arthropods. An abalone is a snail, a mollusk.

Im here as a result of reading the "warden force" series of books while I was incarcerated. There was numerous stories of people illegally harvesting, or way over harvesting these to sell on the black market. Apparently this is very lucrative (or was back in the 80s & 90s) the one story even mentioned a giant female abalone thats shell was 10 inches across. I had to see for myself what these creatues were, and how they are harvested using the abalone iron

Nice to see that you went back out, next time be sure if you didn't this time to tag all you abs right after you get out of the water. Because of the fact your in such a popular area it gets checked more often than if your further north and if they aren't tagged after you get out of the water and they check while you two were snorkling, then they will be taken and you will be fined.

It's always super important to have a swimming buddies. but its more important to be overly prepared. I've done a lot of camping and recreational diving free diving. its very scary to lose control, and be swept under water. I remember when I was younger my brother and father went on a snorkling tour in the bamaha's or the virgin islands, one of those two. And the tour guide and my family were yanked out from knee deep water about 180 yards or so, the current was so strong it yanked other beach goers while the waves looked small unknown to us, there was a huge drop off and rip current that flowed right along side the beach we were at and the signs were ripped down from the storm. Not even the tour guide was familiar with it. everyone made it back to shore, but most were in a panic for 15-18 minutes of terror of treading water. luckily my little brother who was 3 years odl at the time, was picked up by one of the locals there who noticed people were swimming much further and harder than normal, and radio'd for help. they managed to swim back. needless to say my father never stepped foot into the ocean again.
