  • We leave Port Washington, New York and head for the big apple via the East River! Things get a little crazy with heavy wake and winds, will we make it to Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey?

I had that lift bridge lift for quite a few of us and also have met two people who took that route and did not look up(!).
The East River at full blast is good practice for when you are going from Yarmouth, NS through the Tusket Islands and around Cape Sable. You may say "But we are not going to Yarmouth, NS." But you never know.

Wow! You are braver than us!! We had heard enough horror stories of people getting sucked into the bridge while waiting that we weren't willing to risk it. And we'd love to go to Nova Scotia!!! Maybe in a couple of years!

That current on the East River looked intense! Glad to see you guys made the most of it and enjoyed the ride 🌊🤙

It was definitely one of those rides you never forget for sure! So cool!

When headed through (south) Hell Gate a month or so, ago (bucking a bit of foul current on a big Skye 51), we encountered a 40' +/- boat that had just exited the east side of Roosevelt Island northbound - without the drawbridge open! Don't know if they were clueless heading up that channel, or if the bridge just didn't open on time (and they were just caught in the current). Either way, an expensive day. Their mast was bent in two just above the spreaders. Ouch!
The fastest speed over the bottom that my Alberg 30 has ever gone was motoring down the East River about a decade ago: going about 4.7 through the water, and clocking in at 9.7 knots boat speed on the GPS! Always a fun trip, and the bouncy ride is worth the price of admission.

Whoa!!! That was our big fear! We had been told that even if you ask for the bridge to open it can take over an hour and i was so afraid of being caught in the current!! It's a lot of fun to go that fast on a boat that rarely gets over 5.5 😂 It certainly is one of the moments you never forget!!
