New York has a sewage problem that is making the waterways unsafe for swimming and boating. But the billion oyster project is on a mission to clean it up and restore reefs!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

Definitely didn't expect to see you in my neck of the woods at all, let alone for a big crossover, but as they say in Star Wars...a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Funny to see you here to help clean the Hudson River because I remember back in April when you were describing Curiosity as "Which has all sorts of bacteria, bird poop and who knows whatever else" and you hearted my comment when I said "You're not describing a boat, you're just describing the Hudson River" 😂 I was actually almost named Hudson since we used to live right by the river (I'm now in eastern Long Island) but my parents were like "You know, maybe naming him after a polluted river isn't the best idea".
Governors Island (its original name was Paggank or Nut Island by the indigenous Lenape) only recently became accessible year-round. Before 2021, the island was open just for the summer. I think the pandemic made the NYC government realize that people need a place to take a break and relax year-round.

3:24 That weird structure jutting out towards the river is ventilation for the Holland Tunnel which connects Lower Manhattan to Jersey City. When the tunnel was completed in 1927, it was the longest continuous underwater tunnel for cars in the world. It was also the first mechanically ventilated tunnel. It isn't named Holland because of the area's Dutch heritage but rather after Clifford Milburn Holland who led the project but died three years before it was opened due to a heart attack from stress over the project.
3:52 That building behind Jason is ALSO ventilation. This one's for the Hugh L. Carey/Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. This one opened in 1950 and was renamed to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel in 2012 after the late NY Governor (who governed from 1975 to 1982)

Not the only reef project the city has done! The NYC Subway once had a program from 2001 to 2010 where subway cars that were retired would serve a new purpose as artificial reefs. The MTA deployed more than 2,500 deaccessioned train cars to underwater locations off the coasts of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. The most famous of which is the Redbird Reef off the coast of Delaware. Called that because of the Redbird subway cars famous for their iconic red paint.
The program helped not just create miles of artificial reefs, but also avoid 30 million dollars in disposal costs. If you want to see the retired subway cars that are still preserved, I recommend visiting the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn the next time you're in the area. You can walk right in them and feel like you time-traveled!

Governors Island may look like just another island, but it's of US military importance. After the American Revolution started, Washington assigned General Charles Lee to create a defense plan for New York Harbor. He called for several defense forts, one of which would be at Governors Island. Forty cannons were initially added, and defenses continued to improve. The fortifications contributed to the success of Washington's retreat from Brooklyn to Manhattan after the Battle of Long Island, when the British Army attempted to take Brooklyn Heights during the largest battle of the war, around August 27, 1776
After the war, the island was also used by the military during the War of 1812, the Civil War (to garrison troops, treat victims of cholera, and as a military prison), WWI (when troops on the island helped capture German vessels in the harbor MINUTES after the US declared war on Germany), and WWII (used as the headquarters of the US First Army and Eastern Defense Command).

A huge thank you for this episode. As some one who has lived in New York most of my life, thank you for bringing awareness to this program. I am happy to say that the reseeding of the Oyster beds is not just happening in NY harbor, bit also a number of harbors and waterways surrounding along Island as well. Sadly the overflow issue will limit the progress until it is resolved. I’ve had a few triathlons that has the Hudson as the swim portion cancelled because of this issue in the past. I am hopeful that there will be changes made, but not optimistic at the same time. I hope I am wrong and it gets done.
Nice for you to be able to make it for Grandmas 91st birthday. I wish her many more.

Wow Jason and Nikki now I can agree with you on a pollution issue. Dumping raw sewage into a waterway. It is interesting that there is a creature created to help clean-up an ecosystem.
But as usual I can't help myself. You said in this you tube, the conference had sessions on how to answer question from people like me, The global warming skeptic!
Question. Did the conference explain how to answer a question on CO2?
Question. How can CO2 a trace gas in the atmosphere that is essential for plant life be a pollutant?
Now I realize you don't have time to answer many questions so I will tell give my answer as to why it is not.
1: CO2 is a trace gas in our atmosphere, 407 ppm. Remember 10,000 ppm is one percent, CO2 is a trace gas.
2: CO2 is an absolute requirement for plant growth. For vegetarians that might be important.
3: At 150 ppm all plant life dies. Plant grow begins to diminish long before 150ppm is reached.
Question. How low would to like CO2 levels to go?
Question: How slow would like plants to grow?
Question: Why is it climate change and not global warming? I'm told the oceans are only rising. That sounds like global warming.
Jason and Nikki I have a science back ground, with that everyone is free to believe what they like but the truth and the facts are just that.

Our planet is so small, we need to be more considerate by treating our home with more consideration etc etc - and as proof how small, several of you who I avidly follow were who you both interviewed. Thanks for staying in touch.

Recently did the same with my aunt for her 93rd BD. And it was only a few miles away from NYC! So close yet so far from our paths crossing again. Enjoy your time in the US.

Thank you for sharing. This was a great view of where I grew up in the greater nyc community (the Bronx).
BTW for me it’s the adventures, sights and experiences that you two are having that keeps me tuning in🍻

Hey guys- I’ve been with you since the road days (former patreon but financially needed a break for a bit-it’s not you it’s me) I am a camper gal living in Colorado. None the less your story is not about sailing or RVing. You guys are about story telling and you do it very well. I’ll continue to follow your stories wherever you are. Thanks for all you do!

God Nikki and Jason, it's finally good to hear something positive that NYC is doing, given the whole Flint situation is still a mess it's so good to hear something positive. And so good you are catching up with Naughty Styles interviewed xquisite as well. Have a great week!

Nauti Styles is also one of my favorite channels, Vicki and Rico bring us all a lot of joy and information. I'm looking forward to you all getting together , it's going to be a hoot for sure . I have been looking at the H&H web site , wow what a beautiful bunch of boats . Can't wait until you get yours.

Like others have said, it truly is the two of you who we keep coming back for more. Your adventures are unique, fun and encourage us all to do better and to get out and experience life instead of just reading about it or watching a video. So many of the places you have been or things you have done have now made it to my bucket list. And how grateful am! To have less but to experience so much more is so incredibly worthwhile in this crazy world we live. So looking forward to each and every video you put out in the weeks and months ahead! And thank you for allowing us the chance to “get to know you” through the beautifully crafted video and images you share. Much love!

One rarely leaving his farm and you guys traveling the world! My husband and I live through you, to a degree! We are excited for the next year with you guys! You go places and do things we just do not feel comfortable doing. So, we feel the all the feels and joys of watching you guys!! Keep on being adventurous!!

Nikki and Jason, I found you when you were RVing and my husband and I were about to go full time. We learned so much from you two and camped in areas that you told us about. When you switched to the cruising life, I was a little bummed, but hey, you gotta do you! I’ve continued to follow you through the years, not because I’m going to become a boater (my husband gets terribly sea sick), but because I’ve grown to love your personalities and I learn so much from you two.

I started watching you guy's when you were sailing through Samoa, on that little tiny Island that couple created that Eco houses.
Through your travels towards New Zealand when the Seas were rough and Jason was 'green '.
But also your trip through our amazing country, New Zealand, you've been places I haven't in my life as a Kiwi.
Enjoy watching your insatiable appetite for world and travel.
    Keep safe wherever you go.

So we were expecting to watch this episode as our Sunday ritual (w mimosas, bc why not?), and thinking it might be more of a "let's just support Nikki and Jason by watching" episode since NYC isn't the most exotic of locales. But you guys still made it so fun and interesting. Keep up the great work!
