    No disrespect meant, and I thank you for taking the time to teach. You may already know this and not like the feel of it but, If you will wrap your straw cord around one more loop and pull back and forth, it will clean all the way around the spoke.

    Legend has it the second wheel is almost finished.

    PERSONALLY, what I regard as the hard way & PROPER way is to get rid of the crusty old tire, DISASSEMBLE the wheel, polish spokes one by one (chuck 'em in your drill and run find sandpaper around 'em - stainless nipples too!) and have the rim and hub re-chromed! THAT'S how you should do it - and an alloy rim would be polished by hand with 600-grit or 800-grit (depending on degree of corrosion) on up through 3000-grit sandpaper, and then clear-coat it preferably with powder-coat - THEN you'd reassemble & balance the wheel - and look for a nice NEW tire!

    This exercise is just an example of "cleaning" rusty wire wheels. Of course I will fit new tyres and balance the wheels before fitting them to the Jag. Thanks!

    gitbas ... I second the request for a video of where you got the wheel stand, or how you built it!

      Just an old rolling office box stand with a car wheel bearing welded on top. Home made but works great!

    Where did you get the wheel stand? Did you make it your self? If so can you do a video on that as well?

    Have started doing the same thing to a vintage motorcycles spoke wheels (Mild steel) but have found that the wire brushes leaves nasty grooves in the spokes, which after a while invites rust to form more easily. Don't know if these are stainless or mild steel spokes?

    1st of all , if your going to go through all that to get em cleaned, i would have just disassembled them, cleaned, polished then cleared to prevent oxidation & then respoked and balanced.

    I am in the beginning stages of doing some Cadillac wires... It is a labor of love. I am using the Por 15 Crystal process of clear coating.

    If I were to spray chrome on a bumper, would I need a paintbrush, or just spray it directly on it?

    Ouch. Kids, dont do this. Throw the power tools out and use 5-56 or WD40, toothbrushes, fine wool, softcloth, to desolve grease and rust super fast and effordless. Autosol polish can be used for dark spots. And yeah, take them apart if you can!

    you can buy old style Pirelli cinturato tyres, and Michelin xwx and goodyear sp tyres, and Dunlop sp tyres though they do come out expensive. some are around £200 each those balance weights are correct for that wheel too. yes it does take a long time. and before hand, tap the spokes with a metal stick, and listen for dull ring against bright ring.

    So having completely stripped the protective coating off of the spokes using a drill and steel wire brush, how do you stop to the spokes rusting again immediately?

    • @gitbas
      @gitbas  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Temporary protection with wd40, permanent protection with a layer of clear coat.

    Where's the Jaguar?
    Also what about tightening the spokes. I know all about bicycle wheels. The spokes must require some attention after 50 years.

    Mmm you only need 9:05 minutes (incl. 1:46 minutes intro) for cleaning 1 wheel. I'll bring mine over to your place and pick'em up 1 hour later, ok?

    That whole exercise terrifies me. there is no attention to the structural integrity of the wheel. the particular Pirelli Cinturato tyres that are fitted i don't believe have been made for 20 years, when perfectly good new tyres can be had from Longstone tyres, and the balance weights are wrong. somethings atre worth getting a profesional to do and i would suggest wheels were one. sorry to sound so stuffy

    I came here hoping to find a better way to clean mine. this is how I have been doing mine!!, but I like the string method! and the clearcoat tip! I tend to use a dremel on a flexi drive, (dremel hanging above me) and use the 1cm cup brushes. most of the time. you can buy a good handful for a few pounds on ebay, via china. oh well here goes. don't forget a small mask! (brake dust)

    • @johnairey3881
      @johnairey3881 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      finished mine, I mainly used a dremmel -on real slow setting, with a load of steel wirecup brushes, all round, and a few straight ones from the rear, you end up with a lot of greasy wax after which dulls it all. I then used 'Cillit bang' bathroom mousse to clean the chrome, and went over with a microfiber cloth and some strips of same to clean to a great shine, they look great now.
