Maybe a small sponge, cut a slit in it, cover the gap with polish and put the slit around the spoke? Just from experience of trying to remove the discolouration of the downpipe by applying polish on a cotton sock, it tends to tighten and get stuck while moving up and down, would have thought it would be similar for a lace?
sounds like a great idea, was thinking how is this any better than just use a small piece of cloth and just wrap the spoke and run it up and down, then you come up with a better solution.
I tried this but my spokes were too bad. I ended up using 20 feet of 150 emery cloth, fine wire wool and Autosol polish. 20 hours of work for two wheels! They look pretty good now.
And here I thought I was the only one who did it this way, I actually use a metal polish instead of the mothers because it works quicker, and then I use never dull to bring the luster back to life and protect it, and then I finally top it with gtechniq serum ultra ceramic coating. Good for 6 to 8 years
Does anyone know what spokes are made of and what is the surface material on the spokes? It has to be galvanized if it’s steel or it would rust. Seems like it would save time by removing the spikes and then clean the hub and spokes them out it back together and true the rim. Shops will true the rims and it doesn’t cost much at all if your willing to wait a few days
Most spokes are anodised it is thin in most cases if you remove it with this abrasive method they will rust almost immediately WD40 and a cloth and leave it at that...
I watched 5 vids for a real trick! This is the one. The shoestring trick is the genius move!
It totally works!
Thanks! I have no idea why some commenters would want to leave a nasty comment, but I found this very useful!
It’s okay. Comes with the territory.
Dude! This is brilliant. Thanks so much for posting!
It works really well if they aren’t too far gone. Good luck!
I was doing this in the late 70s ... brasso and 0000 steelwool :) Thk god for stainless spokes now :)
Indeed!
Glad you posted this B! I just got back from a rip and was pondering how to clean mine. Very tedious but it’s got to be done.
Tedious indeed but what a huge difference. Once they get cleaned well they are much easier to maintain for the long run.
Might as well pull my other shoe string out. Walking is little clumsy with one. Neat trick here.
Lol.
Beautiful idea!! Thank you very much for sharing this genius idea! 💥🤛
You’re welcome. It works well as long as they aren’t too far gone. Go get after it!
Motorcyclists: Running the streets on Saturday. Running thru Mothers on Sunday 😂

Simple but brilliant idea. 👌
It works if they aren’t too far gone.
Nice idea. I don't think I'll be removing the Wheels on my road king. I'll be using a motorcycle lift to get the wheels up off the ground.
If you have a lift it wouldn’t be so bad. Be a chose laying on the ground!

It’s a fine art of pressure. Spokes are short enough to slide it once around there too. It worked pretty well.

This looks like a great method I'm gonna give it a shot. Ride on
It helps a lot if they aren’t too far gone!
Love it…better than using dremel?
Dremel can’t get into the recesses. Shoestring get in there!
Brilliant idea!
It works well. Still a very tedious process though.
Again, KoW to the rescue! Thank you!
Awesome!!!
Great tip, using a shoelace. Thank you.
If they aren’t too far gone it can clean up nice.

Way to stick to it. Yeah…this works well if they aren’t too far gone. Steel wool is a wonderful thing.
@@KeepOnWrenching It took a lot of patience. I even sacrificed a few nights in the pub!
The shoelace is genius

pretty darn cool man, going to help 100%
Thanks. Will do!

Great info. Thank you!
@@KeepOnWrenching just remember to take it slow, there's no rush, just little by little.
Thanks i got an 08 harley and the spokes are pretty rusty! Any tips the random bolts that have rust?
Evaporust is incredible for cleaning up bolts!
@@KeepOnWrenching thanks you're the best!
Try a bore snake for 12gauge they work good too
Will give it a try!
Good video Brian keep up the great work
Thanks, Zach!
Just about to go through the pain. Great tip.
If they aren’t too bad it works great!
@@KeepOnWrenching Did the job. Look like new now :)
@@NaziHampster that’s great to hear! Nice job!!
Great tip - thanks for the video. And you sound a little like Jack Black. 😃👍🏼
It works! People keep saying that. Lol
that is brilliant!! I'm sold :D
Works well if they aren’t completely gone
@@KeepOnWrenching I understand. Sometimes it’s too late
Nice video
Thanks!
This gonna work without scratches on them ah... ❤
My spokes are so rusty, I had to use solder wick braid, then finish off with the flat shoe lace.
It isn’t always pretty. Great job taking the time!
Lol ima do this on my build thx

You can get stainless ones, but not all of them are. The cheaper ones are zinc coated.
@@KeepOnWrenching Thanks bud! I found out when trining to polish them. It was a ton of work. Much better to just buy them polished or chrome
Dude, breathing so hard sounds like he is running a marathon 😂
Noted.
@@KeepOnWrenchinghaha just laughing at your comment. Great technique!
Great time saver.👍
It’s works well if trey aren’t too far gone.
@@KeepOnWrenching
It took me all afternoon yesterday just to do my rear rim.👍
OH my wow genius..thanks man...haha
It works great if the spikes aren’t too far gone. Good luck!
Any good adwise for scuffs and dents on the rim itself? (Cb500 four)
0000 steel wool and WD40 will get you a long way!
@@KeepOnWrenchingany tip for polishing the hub?
Brilliant 👍
It totally works if they aren’t too bad.
Neat tip.
Glad you liked it!
Patience chrome paiste also if a bit rust use tin foil
Tin foil works too. I’ve done some vids using it. I like the cloth tho…a little less nails on chalkboard.

@@KeepOnWrenching yep. But the older quality chromes come out very good. I prefer micro fiber for the finish
After 16 hours, I lost the will to live and bought some alloys! 😂
lol. Understandable.
Perfect for those of us on shoestring budget. (Insert dad joke rim shot here.)
I had to fight myself to not use that reference myself. LOL. It works great, man as long as they spokes aren't too far gone.
I'm not sure this would be as easy with wheels that are still mounted to the motorcycle.
"run this to your mothers" lol , thanks for the tip! anyone knows if the Honda cb/cl series has crhome or aluminum spokes?
I’m not entirely sure. I know I’ve seen replacements sold in both platings.
Didn’t work at all for me. Great technique. Faulty of spokes I think
If they are too far gone there isn’t not much you can do.
Old tee shirt cut into 1 inch wide strips
That’d work too!

I was thinking the same thing. Great tip. I have a '76 Goldwing with gold spokes and this looks like it might remove the gold. I'm gonna try WD first
Great system, but holy hell does this take long
Yeah…no way around I’m afraid put on a good podcast and get busy!
Cleaning spokes has to be the most time consuming and boring activity any motorcyclist will partake in.
That and cleaning engine fins. Lol

Huh?
Dirty spokes make for angry folks 😂😅
Gotta be an easier way. Lol
this shit takes hours ... just use a buffer
Lots of little nooks. It takes time. No doubt.
