Just the concept of attacking before they try to initiate their passing will take your guard retention up a few notches. If you're constantly looking to sweep and submit them they're going to have so few of opportunities to engage and commit to closing that final distance for chest to chest connection to complete the pass.
15 years nogi, trying to find that magic in retention of my guard, and boom voila, I find your video. I'm having this thought now, you have enlighten my guard retention grappling game in ways I will never thank you enough.
Good learning video for as my guard or ground game sucks. I will definitely put this on tonight, if I see myself on my back. I love these kinds of videos because of that small detail that makes the whole move work. Keep these videos coming. 💪
Thank you so for much for this. As an older white belt starting out, I feel like open guard is learning to go into the deep end of the pool. Thank you for sharing these concepts and tips.
Thanks from Maui Jorge! I was your last roll during your seminar. Appreciate the concepts. Had fun when you and Jacob came down. Hope to see you guys back!
I`m a 4 stripe white belt and get my guard passed a lot. Mostly on my right side. You gave me some good advice to keep my elbows close to my knees which is probably one if not the biggest mistake I make. Second best advice to switch directly to the "preferred" guard which for me is the spider and DLR Guard. At the end of the day I realized through this video, that everybody I roll with has certain puzzle pieces which they like and as soon as those pieces are not working anymore they have to figure out how to solve the problem and so do I and as a white belt I found it so hard to improvise those techniques in an blink of an eye, which are necessary if my "preferred" puzzle pieces don't work anymore. But I guess this the bottom line of how to properly learn Jiu Jitsu!? Thank you Mr. Valladares for offering this kind of content. Regards from Germany
Great Video!! Loved the detailed explanations! I’m 66 yrs purple belt and my guard game sucks ! How long did it take before you started to see improvement?
If you drill this everyday for 15 minutes a day. You'll start to see major improvements within 2 weeks. 6 months and you'll permanently upgrade your guard!
Hey Jorge! Can’t express how grateful I am for these great instructionals as a new white belt 🙏🏼. A question regarding the arm positioning in the guard (placing them outside my knees), doesn’t this leave me very vulnerable to under hooks-> knee slices?
Excellent content! Trying to figure out a way I can download this video and edit out the f-bombs so my 9 year old grandson and I can nerd out on it. He had a final match against a very talented kid using this guard last weekend and it would be a great tool to expand his already enormous knowledge of jiu jitsu.
That's completely up to you and what your style of jiu jitsus is. A really common effective one is to switch between de la riva and collar sleeve guard!
