  • The 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Ford Mustang GTD are two exceptional vehicles, each making waves on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, often regarded as the ultimate proving ground for performance cars.     The Porsche 911 GT3 RS clocked a lap time of 6 minutes and 49.328 seconds on the 20.8-kilometer Nürburgring circuit. On the other hand, the Ford Mustang GTD, a track-focused evolution of the classic Mustang, recorded a time of 6 minutes and 57.685 seconds.     The Porsche 911 GT3 RS houses a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine, producing 525 metric horsepower.     Super charged vs naturally aspirated. Come on man. They are very different. Remarkable feat from Porsche. That mustang needs to be going against turbo charged cars.

    Was not a head to head battle. Done at different times. The GT3 is a tried and tested platform, the GTD is just now getting some laps on this brand new platform. With time and a better driver the GTD will get quite a bit quicker. One of the other manufacturers (forget who it was) said they think they could shave a good 10 seconds off that time. We'll see. If you watch Ford's video of the lap, you can hear the car is not being pushed at some points in the race, the RPMs seem quite low at times. The driver is using caution on this new car.

      I still think the GTD is going to be a monster on other tracks and kill the GT3RS on different ones. They just couldn't compete with the amount t of knowledge Porsche has with that track. Decades of trial and error vs Ford just diving into it for the first time.

      @ The Nurburgring is 90% curves and corners with two sections where horsepower actually matters. _Weight_ matters much more than horsepower on this track and the GT3RS is somewhere around 600 pounds lighter or potentially even more. The hp level is irrelevant after a certain point on this track.

    The disappointing thing about the ford is not that it’s slower than the gt3rs, it’s that they charged premium super car prices yet they still used old cheap ways to try to get performance. The car is still super heavy, so they add a whole lot of power, as well as the stickiest and widest tires of any production car to compensate for its short comings. This should have been a $100-120k car if I’m being generous. Not $350k.

    i'm amazed how fast a mustang lapped the NRG. after all, the engine is in the front, not the perfect setup. the weight is almost criminal, accounting for much of the difference to the gt3rs. what annoys me the most though is that GTD reminds me of the golf GTD (diesel)

      front engine is not a problem for gt class, at least for race cars all front engine cars are commpetitive in their class.

      GTR grand tourer-sports, Chiron luxury straight line performer, Nevera heavy electric dragster. For track racers weight is usually most important. And lets be real, sport = track performance, not 0-60, donuts or other gimmicks. Cars like Chiron and other sport-luxury ego boosters will likely break after a few laps on the track.

    the GTD looks amazing, the interior is spectacular but for 2/3 of the cost Porsche does some things better ( like cornering) and probably has a cheaper maintenance. Anyway I think ford did a good job and will have plenty of clients.
    the lap time even if worse than the Porsche's it is still very good.

    la Mustang GTD se fait mettre à l'amende sur le nurb par une voiture de 8 ans plus vieille, cent mille euros moins chère et trois cent chevaux moins puissance! Et si tu la compare à la Porsche de son âge et de sa puissance, la GT2RS, elle prend juste une fessée de dix secondes!! Ils sont fort ces américains!!!

      The rear engine Porsche keeps power to the ground and one of the reasons it does so well , With a lot less power !
      Corvette engineering knew a mid engine corvette would be better than a front engine design .
      The mustang will never reach record lap times with front engine technology .
